Ci sono un bambino prodigio, due nonni fantastici, una madre saggia e bellissima, vicini di casa sorprendenti, moltissima grande musica, un padre da dimenticare... e c'è soprattutto lei, La Città.
Insomma che questo libro avrebbe tutti gli ingredienti per essere un bellissimo libro, eppure qualcosa non torna, manca quel "quid" capace di trasformare un libro gradevole in un libro da ricordare. Sarà che la copia in mio possesso non è quella definitiva e alcune imprecisioni devono ancora passare attraverso l'editing, sarà che per certi versi c'è un eccesso di buonismo, sarà che non sono riuscita a non pensare a come avrebbe scritto Stephen King una storia del genere...


There are a prodigy child, two fantastic grandparents, a beautiful and wise mother, amazing neighbors, a deal of great music, a father to forget ... and above all there is she, The City.
In short, this book would have all the ingredients to be a beautiful book, but something does not work, it lacks that "something" that can turn a pleasant book in a book to remember. Will be that the copy in my possession is not the final one and some inaccuracies have yet to go through the editing, will be that in some ways there is an excess of doing good, will be that I could not think about how Stephen King would write history of this kind ...

Di libri post catastrofe che parlano di un'umanità così depauperata da essere ridotta a un solo membro o poco più ce ne sono moltissimi. Le catastrofi sono di tutti i generi, ma ovviamente sempre autoindotte, a partire dalla vetta assoluta di "Io sono leggenda" di Matheson fino all'inquietante "La strada" di Cormac McCarthy passando per il variegato "L'ultimo degli uomini" della Atwood, che non a caso è anche pittrice.
Anche in questo caso gli umani fanno del loro meglio per fare del loro peggio, e il libro mette in campo personaggi che ricordano tanto il Dottor Stranamore e situazioni clonate da Guantanamo.
Insomma che questo libro ricorda un po' troppo il famoso detto "parlare a suocera per far capire a nuora" e tutta la sua originalità consiste solo nel fatto che, per una volta, il sopravvissuto si rivela essere una donna.
La buona scrittura riesce comunque a rendere la lettura un'esperienza piacevole.


Books post catastrophe that speak of a humanity so impoverished as to be reduced to a single member or so there are plenty. The disasters are of all kinds, but of course, always self-induced, since the absolute peak of Matheson' "I Am Legend" up to the unsettling "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy through the variegated "Oryx And Crake" of Atwood, which not coincidentally is also a painter.
Again humans do their best to do their worst, and the book brings into play characters that recall both the Dr. Strangelove and situations cloned from Guantanamo.
In short, this book reminds me a little the famous saying "talk to mother-in-law to make it clear to daughter-in-law" and all its originality lies only in the fact that, for once, the survivor is revealed to be a woman.
Good writing still managed to make the reading an enjoyable experience..

Pare che il romanzo sia la versione moderna di una favola. Questa favola io non l'ho mai letta e nemmeno la conoscevo, così mi sono goduta la storia "come se fosse la prima volta".
La premessa è molto strana: ci sono 12 ragazze misteriose che ogni notte, nella New York dei tempi del proibizionismo, vanno a ballare in locali malfamati, e ballano con così tanto entusiasmo da rovinare ogni notte un paio di scarpe.
La verità su queste ragazze è un po' scioccante: sono sorelle, figlie di un uomo facoltoso e algido, che ha ucciso loro la madre nel tentativo di farle partorire l'erede maschio. Delle figlie non si cura, le tiene chiuse in casa, pezzenti e ignoranti, finché la più vecchia di loro, Jo (nome che mi sembra un chiaro omaggio alla Jo di Piccole donne) non scopre la danza.
Da quel giorno Jo, detta il Generale, guida ogni notte le ragazze fuori dalla loro prigione, a vivere avventure di ogni genere ma restando un mistero per gli uomini che danzano con loro, di nascosto dal padre. A un certo punto però lo strano fenomeno delle ragazze danzanti raggiunge i giornali, il padre si insospettisce e decide di liberarsi di loro dandole in mogli a uomini scelti da lui.
Questa decisione provoca una valanga di avvenimenti che renderanno la libertà alle ragazze, in un happy ending dolceamaro.
Una lettura davvero consigliabile.



It seems that the novel is the modern version of a fairy tale. This fairy tale I've never read or even know, so I enjoyed the story "as if it were the first time".
The premise is very strange: there are mysterious 12 girls that every night, in the New York of the days of Prohibition, go dancing in seedy venues, and dance with so much enthusiasm to ruin a pair of shoes every night.
The truth about these girls is a bit shocking: they are sisters, daughters of a wealthy and icy man, who killed their mother in the attempt to make her give birth to the male heir. Daughters do not care, keeps them locked in the house, beggars and ignorant, until the oldest of them, Jo (name that seems to me a clear tribute to Jo of Little Women) do not discover the dance.
Since that day, Jo, said the General, secretly from their fatherdrives every night the girls out of their prison, and they experience adventures of all kinds but remain a mystery to the men who dance with them. At some point, however, the strange phenomenon of the dancing girls reaches the newspapers, the father becomes suspicious and decides to get rid of them giving them as wifes to men chosen by him.
This decision causes an avalanche of events that will make the freedom to the girls, in a bittersweet happy ending .
A really advisable reading .

Midnight in Europe

Non c'è dubbio sul fatto che il periodo storico immediatamente precedente lo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale sia molto intrigante per uno scrittore di spy story, e infatti Alan Furst, riconosciuto maestro del settore, non si lascia scappare il ricco piatto di intrighi internazionali che l'epoca gli ha messo davanti, focalizzandosi in modo particolare sulla sanguinosa guerra civile combattuta in Spagna. I suoi personaggi sono un avvocato spagnolo espatriato, un avventuriero con un nome falso come una moneta da 3 euro, un conte polacco, dei cani di razza, una affascinante marchesa e una giovane americana. Cucinando adeguatamente questi personaggi se ne dovrebbe ricavare un saporito minestrone, se non che il romanzo non è mai riuscito a convincermi. Innanzi tutto il personaggio della marchesa è pretestuoso: la storia regge benissimo anche senza di lei, che è debole sia come seduttrice sia come spia. Il conte polacco è estremamente simpatico, e avrebbe meritato che l'autore ne facesse miglior uso, così come dei cani. La giovane americana compare all'inizio e alla fine del romanzo, e, a parte invischiarsi in un matrimonio mal riuscito, salvo liberarsene appena in tempo per tornare nelle braccia del suo primo amore non combina niente altro. L'avventuriero e l'avvocato sono in effetti i due principali protagonisti, e la storia si regge su di loro al punto da oberarli di incombenze, e dal dover dare loro poteri speciali per sfuggire alle sciagurate circostanze nelle quali l'autore li infila. Particolarmente esilaranti sono le tecniche di seduzione messe in atto dall'avvocato nei confronti della marchesa.
Anche la scrittura è abbastanza noiosa.



There is no doubt that the historical period immediately preceding the outbreak of World War II is very intriguing for a writer of spy story, and in fact Alan Furst, acknowledged master of the field, does not miss the big pot of international intrigue that the time has put in front of him, focusing particularly on the bloody civil war fought in Spain. His characters are an expatriate Spaniard lawyer, an adventurer with name is false as a 3 euro coin, a Polish count, some purebred dogs, a fascinating marquise and a young American girl. Cooking properly, these characters would mean a tasty soup, except that the novel has never managed to convince me. First of all, the character of the Marquise is preposterous: the story holds up well without her, which is weak and as a seductress is a spy. The Polish count is extremely nice, and would have deserved that the author took best use of him, as well as the dogs. The young American woman appears at the beginning and end of the novel, and, apart dragged into a unsuccessful marriage from wich she rid just in time to get back into the arms of her first love, brings no other. The adventurer and the lawyer are in fact the two main protagonists, and the story is based on them to the point to overcharge them with tasks, having the need to give them special powers to escape the unfortunate circumstances in which the author puts them. Particularly hilarious are the seduction techniques implemented by the lawyer against the Marquise.
Even the writing is quite boring.

Una bella storia, complessa, intrigante e ben scritta, che, a parte alcuni riferimenti ai precedenti volumi, si legge benissimo come libro a se stante e non sembra appartenere a una serie. In realtà i personaggi mantengono tutti una viva freschezza che testimonia a favore della vena creativa dell'autrice.
Un particolare ringraziamento alla traduttrice, che ha reso particolarmente piacevole l'esperienza della lettura di questo libro.


A good story, complex, intriguing and well written, that, apart from some references to previous volumes, can be read as a stand alone book and does not seem to belong to a series. In fact all the characters have a vivid freshness that testifies in favor of the creativity of the author.
A special thanks to the translator, who has made the experience of reading this book particularly pleasant.

Tenderloin

Una prostituta viene uccisa in un distretto di San Francisco (il Tenderloin) dove imperano la malavita, il gioco, la polizia corrotta e gli intrighi politici.
Niente di strano quindi, se non che la prostituta è un ex membro di una potentissima setta, così potente da poter influire sull'elezione del sindaco della città.
Sarà il solito pseudodetective un po' drogato e un po' ubriaco, perennemente nei guai con la polizia e l'FBI, a risolvere il caso e a salvare la pelle a un po' di gente.
Scritto mescolando realtà (la storia della setta del Tempio del Popolo, retta dal folle Jim Jones, e la successiva strage per mezzo di un suicidio di massa dei membri della stessa), con avvenimenti di fantasia, Tenderloin è un bel noir, ben scritto e abbastanza adrenalinico.
La "sfiga" da cui è affetto il protagonista è un po' stereotipata, ma non fino al punto da essere stucchevole.



A prostitute is killed in a district of San Francisco (the Tenderloin) where the underworld, the game, the corrupt police and political intrigues reign.
Not surprising then, exept that the prostitute is a former member of a powerful sect, so powerful that can influence the election of the mayor of the city.
It will be the usual pseudodetective a bit junkie and a bit drunk, always in trouble with the police and the FBI, to solve the case and save the skin to some people.
Written by mixing reality (the history of the sect of the People's Temple, founded by the mad Jim Jones, and the subsequent massacre by means of a mass suicide of the members of the same sect), with fantasy events, Tenderloin is a nice noir, well-written and quite adrenalinic.
The "bad luck" that affects the main character is a little stereotypical, but not to the point of being cloying.

Attraverso l'analisi di un vecchio delitto l'autore racconta dell'introduzione di alcuni moderni metodi di indagine che noi diamo per scontati, come le prove fisiche, l'analisi forense della scena del delitto e del cadavere e l'escussione dei testimoni.
Parla anche di un'epica caccia all'assassino che si conclude nel bel mezzo della corsa all'oro, e del successivo processo.
Molto interessante, ma non così eccitante come l'autore avrebbe voluto; in alcuni tratti diventa addirittura ripetitivo e noioso.


Through the analysis of an old murder the author tells of the introduction of some modern methods of investigation that we take for granted, such as the physical evidence, forensic analysis of the crime scene and the corpse and the examination of witnesses.
He also talks about an epic murder hunt that ends in the middle of the gold rush, and the subsequent process.
Very interesting, but not as exciting as the author would have liked; in some places even becomes repetitive and boring.

We Are Not Ourselves

Un libro indubbiamente molto particolare, senza una trama precisa, o meglio, con una trama che è la vita di una donna, descritta seguendo quasi il passare dei giorni e con minuzia.
L'infanzia di figlia di immigrati irlandesi, con una madre alcoolizzata e un padre che lei mitizza. La scelta di una scuola che non sente sua ma che è quello che tutti si aspettano da lei.
Il matrimonio con un uomo eccezionale, ma che presto si ammalerà di Alzheimer, e che metterà alla prova tutta la sua forza di volontà sia prima di ammalarsi, a causa della sua dirittura morale, sia da ammalato.
La maternità tardiva, e il tentativo di riversare nell'unico figlio tutte le ambizioni che non ha potuto soddisfare.
Alla fine del libro la donna però quasi sparisce, restano il figlio, e il suo tentativo di venire a patti con la figura del padre.
Ben scritto, ma troppo pieno di episodi dei quali si finisce col non capire bene l'importanza.

An undoubtedly particular book, without a precise plot, or rather, with a plot that is the life of a woman, described by following almost every passing day and with minutia.
The childhood of the daughter of Irish immigrants, with an alcoholic mother and a father that she mythicize.
The choice of a school that she doesn't like, but that's what everyone expects from her.
The marriage with an exceptional man but who soon will become ill from Alzheimer's, and that will test all his will power both before getting sick, because of his moral rectitude, both as sick.
The late motherhood, and the attempt to pour in her only son all the ambitions that she could not meet.
At the end of the book, however, the woman almost disappears, remain his son, and his attempt to come to terms with his father figure.
Well written, but too full of episodes of which one end up not understanding the importance.

Breaking Free

I temi sono importanti: la sessualità, l'omosessualità, il pregiudizio nei confronti dei diversi, il bullismo. La trattazione è invece molto ingenua, con una trama al limite dello stereotipo, dove ciascuno dei protagonisti non offre alcuna sorpresa. D'altra parte pare che l'autrice sia molto giovane, e leggendo la storia da questo punto di vista si capiscono i molti errori. Errori che si perdonano all'autrice ma non a chi l'ha pubblicata: i talenti vanno fatti maturare, non buttati in pasto al pubblico senza che abbiano finito di affilare le armi.
Le tre stelline sono un premio alla buona volontà dell'autrice e un'esortazione a continuare a scrivere fino ad essere davvero padrona dei suoi strumenti.


The issues are important: sexuality, homosexuality, prejudice against deviants, bullying. The treatment is much naive, with a plot on the edge of the stereotype, where each of the protagonists does not offer any surprises. On the other hand it seems that the author is very young, and reading the story from this point of view you understand the many mistakes. For these mistakes you forgive the author but not who has published her: talent should be matured, not thrown as food to the public without having finished sharpening their weapons.
The three little stars are a reward to the good will of the author, and an exhortation to keep writing until she really master her instruments.

The Katar Legacy

Molto evidentemente primo episodio di una serie, se non fosse per il finale aperto questo romanzo sarebbe comunque un ottimo stand alone. Gli elementi della storia sono ampiamente riconoscibili e riconducibili alla loro fonte (credo che l'autore, come me, sia un appassionato di Farmer), ma l'ottima descrizione dei personaggi e l'interessante creazione del mondo in cui si muovono riesce a mettere in secondo piano questa sensazione di "già sentito".
Qualche lungaggine di troppo in alcune parti.


Evidently the first episode of a series, if it were not for the open-ended this novel would be a great stand alone. The elements of the story are widely recognizable and traceable to their source (I think that the author, like me, is fan of Farmer), but the excellent description of the characters and the interesting creation of the world in which they move can put in the background this feeling of "already heard."
Some slowness in some parts.

Murder on Thames

Un romanzo giallo lieve come una piuma, scritto da un americano ma ambientato sulle sponde del Tamigi. Un detective americano in pensione si ritrova coinvolto nel tentativo di soluzione di una morte inspiegabile, classificata come suicidio dalla polizia britannica, da parte della migliore amica di gioventù della vittima. Facile immaginare che nel seguito della storia (questo romanzo è il primo di una serie prevista di 12) i due oltre che soci diventino qualcosa di più l'uno per l'altro.
Parecchi stereotipi, da parte dell'americano nei confronti degli inglese, e da parte degli inglesi nei confronti dell'americano, che viene quasi trattato da abominio.
Gradevole ma non intrigante.


A mistery novel light as a feather, written by an American but set on the banks of the Thames. A retired American detective finds himself caught in the attempt to resolve a unexplained death classified as suicide by the British police, by the best friend of youth of the victim. Easy to imagine that later in the history (this novel is the first in a planned series of 12) the two partnes will become something more the one for the other.
Several stereotypes, by American against the English, and by the British against the American, who is  treated almost as an abomination.
Pleasant but not intriguing.

Mr. Mercedes

Il mondo costruito da Stephen King è ormai così complesso da contenere al suo interno tutti i possibili riferimenti. E infatti anche questo libro, che è un "banalissimo" thriller nel quale non c'è nulla di fantastico, anzi ha le sue radici nella solida realtà e in moltissima quotidianità americana, contiene eventi il cui orizzonte si trova in altri libri di King, mescolati con altri presi dalla cronaca.
Un banalissimo thriller dicevo, nel senso che la trama avrebbe potuto abbozzarla uno qualsiasi degli scrittori americani specializzati nel genere, e di sicuro ne avrebbero tratto qualcosa di assai buono. Ma il Re è il Re, e lo mostra nell'incredibile modo con cui sbozza i suoi personaggi, che pagina dopo pagina diventano materia vivente, e nella sua costante attenzione agli ultimi e ai diversi, che sono sempre i suoi protagonisti.
Così, come il serial killer è un povero sfigato incapace persino di credere ai propri deliri di onnipotenza, il gruppo che alla fine lo sconfigge è composto dai più improbabili degli improbabili: un poliziotto in pensione con tendenze suicide, un ragazzino di grande intelligenza ma molto giovane e molto nero, e una donna di mezza età con diverse rotelle fuori posto.
Ennesima dimostrazione di come andando al di là delle apparenze si possa diventare invincibili.

Come la Bibbia inizia con la Genesi, anche questa specie di Bibbia dell'America Latina che Galeano ha composto come una trilogia, e intitolato Memory of Fire, inizia con una Genesi. Le storie dell'inizio del mondo, del primo uomo e della prima donna, e del diluvio che fece scomparire l'umanità, sono sorprendentemente simili a quelle che conosciamo, ma poi la vicenda si intorbida, perché arriva il tempo della conquista e dello sterminio. Uno sterminio radicale perché degli Atzechi e degli Inca si tentò di obliterare anche la memoria.
Nessuna Bibbia per loro, nessuna rivelazione, solo tortura, malattia e morte.
Il libro, composto da brevi racconti che terminano con la morte dell'ultimo Absburgo di Spagna, il malaticcio e demente Carlo II, con il quale cessava sia la dinastia sia il possesso delle terre conquistate in America.


As the Bible begins with Genesis, this kind of Latin American Bible Galeano has written as a trilogy, entitled Memory of Fire, begins with a Genesis. The stories of the beginning of the world, the first man and the first woman, and the flood that killed the humanity, are strikingly similar to those we know, but then the story becomes cloudy, because it comes the time of the conquest and extermination. A radical extermination because of the Aztecs and the Incas, they tried to obliterate even the memory.
No Bible for them, no revelation, only torture, disease and death.
The book consists of short stories that end with the death of the last Spanish Habsburg, the sickly and demented Charles II, with whom had ceased both the dynasty and the possession of the conquered lands in America.

The Genome

Il romanzo parte benissimo: il pilota spaziale geneticamente modificato che esce dall'ospedale dopo essere sopravvissuto a stento a un tremendo incidente incontra la classica ragazzina scappata di casa, ovviamente a sua volta geneticamente modificata, e in grandi ambasce perché prossima al processo di metamorfosi che la porterà ad assumente le sue piene capacità. E fino a qui uno pensa di stare leggendo un ottimo romanzo di fantascienza classica. Poi c'è la nave misteriosa, l'intricato reclutamento dell'equipaggio con le sue insolite caratteristiche geneticamente modificate, per tutti tranne che per uno che non solo è un naturale ma è pure gay, e gli stranissimi passeggeri alieni. Ok, fantascienza dello spazio profondo. E poi... insomma che il romanzo non riesce ad assestarsi su un genere ben preciso, e a un certo punto, dopo che è successo l'inevitabile fattaccio sul quale un detective deve indagare, si esplorano per un po' di pagine anche la farsa e la letteratura russa tradizionale. Per non farsi mancare nulla, c'è anche l'happy end con relativa storia d'amore.
Per quanto si legga bene, un romanzo tutto sommato un po' ondivago, con troppa carne al fuoco, e, per certi versi, immaturo rispetto alle opere di Lukyanenko che già conoscevo.


The novel starts very well: the genetically modified space pilot who leaves the hospital after having barely survived a terrible accident meets the classic girl ran away from home, of course, in turn, genetically modified, and in great anguish because next to the process of metamorphosis intended to lead to hers full capacity. As you read easily, the novel is all in all a bit 'wavering, with too many irons in the fire, and, to some extent, immature compared to the works of Lukyanenko that I already knew.

How to Ruin a Queen: Marie Antoinette and the Diamond Necklace Affair

Interessante ricerca storica relativa al ben noto "Affare della collana di diamanti", ovvero uno degli elementi scatenanti della Rivoluzione Francese. Come altri saggi prima di questo, scagiona completamente Maria Antonietta, colpevole tuttalpiù di essere inadeguata come Regina di Francia, e punta il dito contro Jean De La Motte, considerata la mente dell'intrigo, e il Cardinale di Rohan, colpevole di immensa stupidità. Niente di nuovo se non per il livello di approfondimento raggiunto nel delineare il carattere dei personaggi e l'accuratezza nella ricostruzione del processo, viziato da enormi pregiudizi e interessi.
Ben scritto e, a tratti, più divertente della media dei saggi sull'argomento.


Interesting historical research about the well-known "Diamonds Necklace's Affair", which is one of the key triggers of the French Revolution. Like other essays before this, it completely exonerates Marie Antoinette, guilty at most of being inadequate as Queen of France, and points the finger at Jean De La Motte, given the mind of intrigue, and the Cardinal de Rohan, who was guilty of immense stupidity. Nothing new except for the level of detail achieved in delineating the nature of the characters and the accuracy in the reconstruction of the process, marred by massive prejudices and interests.
Well written and, at times, more funny than the average of essays on the subject.

In quella grande cucina che è il suo cervello, Zio Steve impasta e rimescola, salva ricette, mette via gli avanzi per un futuro uso, accumula spezie in vecchi barattoli polverosi. Poi, un giorno, tira fuori da sotto una pigna un mezzo foglio: la ricetta non è completa ma non importa, gli ingredienti sono lì, messi da parte, e se qualcuno è un po' muffo basta tagliare la parte messa peggio e tenere il resto e la sua grande arte di cuoco fa il resto.
Per chi lo conosce bene, è facile riconoscere dove la pietanza si era un po' attaccata al fondo e dove ha aggiunto all'ultimo momento un ingrediente preso a caso dalla sua immensa dispensa, ma che fa? La classe è tale che il piatto riesce comunque superiore a quelli di quasi tutti i cuochi, anche quando la pietanza è un po' contestata come la serie de La torre nera.
Tutto questo per dire che ogni tanto ho ridacchiato riconoscendo le pezze, ma lo stesso me la sono goduta, e ho fatto mattina per finire il romanzo.

Per essere del tutto onesta, devo dire che il mio giudizio risente un po' del fatto che non amo i romanzi scritti a uso didattico, e questo palesemente lo è, anche se non ci fossero alla fine le schede di comprensione a uso degli studenti.
Detto questo, pur tra molte lentezze e un uso un po' paternalistico di certe incertezze adolescenziali dei personaggi, e una certa tendenza a tagliarli con l'accetta, il romanzo scorre bene, ed è evidente la profondità della ricerca storica effettuata dall'autrice.
Probabilmente perfetto per un teenager, lo è decisamente meno per un adulto che legge troppo quale io sono.

To be completely honest, I must say that my opinion suffers a bit that I do not like novels written for educational purposes, and this one clearly is, even if there were no comprehension cardsfor the pupils use at the end of the book.
Said that, despite many delays and use a little patronizing use of certain teen-aged uncertainties of the characters, and a tendency to cut them with an ax, the novel flows well, and it is evident the depth of historical research carried out by the author.

Sarà che questo è il secondo volume di una trilogia e io non me ne sono accorta quando l'ho preso, ma ho trovato questo libro inconcludente. La prima parte è noiosissima, e quando finalmente comincia a succedere qualcosa, il libro finisce e arrivederci al terzo volume.
Eh no, non si fa così. Anche quando si scrive una trilogia, bisognerebbe dare qualcosa al lettore, non semplicemente un arrivederci alla prossima puntata!


Maybe because this is the second volume of a trilogy and I do not even realized when I got it, but I found this book inconclusive. The first part is boring, and when finally somethingstarts to happen, the book ends and Goodbye to the third volume.
Oh no, don't do this. Even when writing a trilogy, you should give something to the reader, not just a see you next episode!

Non sono mai stata particolarmente attratta da Patterson, anche perché non sono particolarmente attratta dal genere che di solito scrive, mi ha incuriosito però la sinossi di questo libro.
Il Vietnam e l'assassinio dei fratelli Kennedy sono da sempre due punti fondamentali intorno ai quali la società americana continua a interrogarsi, moltissimi saggi e romanzi sono stati scritti in argomento, e infatti l'assassinio di Robert è l'evento sul quale si incardinano i fatti descritti nel romanzo, fatti che, pur durando una sola estate, significano una perdita di innocenza (mai titolo fu più azzeccato) di tale e completa gravità da far pensare che il mondo abbia per un attimo vacillato nella sua orbita. E così, come la morte di Robert Kennedy aprirà la strada alla presidenza di Tricky Dicky, al vortice del Watergate e alle sciagure future, insieme a una certa idea di America per la protagonista crollerà anche il concetto di famiglia tradizionale americana, l'idea che che si è fatta della sua condizione di donna e tutte le certezze della sua giovane vita.
Bel libro scritto con molto mestiere, molto ben documentato, unica pecca qualche stereotipo di troppo nel carattere di alcuni personaggi.

Volendo raccontare oggi alcune fiabe famose, che cosa ne verrebbe fuori? Come se la caverebbero i due fratellini di Hansel e Gretel, per esempio, o chi potrebbe essere una moderna Bella Addormentata? La risposta ce la fornisce Jean Thompson con queste sue divertentissime storie, ambientate in pieno XXI secolo e di sicuro non politicamente corrette.
Scrittura accattivante, personaggi molto ben delineati, e ambientazioni perfette rendono questa raccolta di "favole" un libro da leggere assolutamente.

L'idea di parlare dei matrimoni forzati a cui sono costrette le ragazze provenienti da moltissimi paesi dell'Asia (l'India in questo caso) anche se nate in paesi occidentali attraverso un romanzo fantascientifico è davvero originale. Il romanzo si colloca in qualche modo nel filone "Superman" dato che i bellissimi alieni con cui si trova ad avere a che fare Kalli, ragazza scappata di casa per sfuggire ai biechi e degradanti disegni matrimoniali di cui l'ha fatta oggetto una cugina di sua madre, vengono da un pianeta sull'orlo di una catastrofe ecologica e hanno qualche superpotere. Il libro scorre bene e Kalli è un personaggio ben descritto, con le sue reazioni irrazionali a un dolore difficilmente sopportabile da una persona adulta, figuriamoci da una diciassettenne. Gli altri personaggi però sono troppo stereotipati, la controversa relazione tra i due fratelli alieni non riesce mai a uscire dalla dinamica buono/cattivo fino a quasi la fine del romanzo e Margaret è una cattiva stile Spectre di Jan Fleming.

Forse sembrerà incredibile, ma prima di leggere questo libro Porto Rico per me era solo un nome associato a una vaga indicazione geografica (le Antille). Niente sapevo del suo status di membro del Commonwealth statunitense, nazione alla quale Porto Rico è legata da un rapporto di amore/odio, né del suo complicato mix antropologico.
The house on the Lagoon è la storia di una coppia che si ama odiandosi moltissimo, o si odia amandosi, due persone diversissime che, invece di fondersi mantenendo le proprie diversità, passeranno tutta la vita a cercare di sopraffarsi. Dietro la loro storia c'è quella delle loro famiglie, di origine e allargate, in ciascuna delle quali sono presenti elementi delle svariate rappresentative che compongono la popolazione dell'isola, e che forniscono ai due i variegati aspetti della loro personalità. C'è la storia dell'isola, fin da prima della prima guerra mondiale, in cerca di una propria identità tra indipendenza e avvicinamento agli Stati Uniti. E c'è anche una sotterranea discussione tra i coniugi, che è la perenne diatriba tra la realtà dei fatti e quella del romanzo e quale delle due sia superiore all'altra, e se esista o meno una realtà oggettiva, inalterabile e nello stesso tempo narrabile.
Bel romanzo, molto complesso, nella cui trama si muovono personaggi di grande forza. Come però spesso avviene nella vita sarà proprio colei a cui tutto accade senza che nulla possa far accadere, con la sua fragilità che non è altro che flessibilità, che resterà l'unica superstite capace di diventare la voce narrante della storia.

Lo so, è imperdonabile essere arrivati alla mia età senza avere letto questo libro, anche se, alla luce del fatto che Il ritratto di Dorian Gray mi lascia un po' freddina, forse è anche normale.
Se non che ringrazio il sospetto, che mi ha tenuto lontano da questo come da altri libri famosi, perché, oltre che a riconciliarmi con Wilde, mi ha permesso di tracciare un divertente parallelo tra i personaggi della piece e certi caratteri che si incontrano in quella specie di palcoscenico collettivo che si chiama FB. Certo, il buon Oscar non si sarebbe mai potuto immaginare come ci saremmo ridotti, eppure quanti sputasentenze informatici mentono come i due Ernesti, quante consigliatrici da due soldi sembrano Lady Bracknell, e quante fanciulle più o meno giovani (che hanno però pur sempre 35 anni) sono fintamente ingenue come Cecily e Gwendolyn?
Un vero capolavoro la cui brevità ne rende facile la lettura compulsiva.

Come sanno tutti coloro che mi conoscono, io sono un'appassionata lettrice di narrativa e saggistiche riguardanti il nazismo e l'Olocausto. Si tratta di un periodo storico accompagnato da un atteggiamento morale così incomprensibile per me, da spingermi a leggere ogni singolo pezzo di carta che sia stato scritto al riguardo.
Ciò che, nonostante tutto quello che ho letto, non sono mai riuscita a cogliere fino in fondo, è la motivazione profonda di tutto ciò. Perché va bene l'antisemitismo, vanno bene le motivazioni economiche, vanno bene le rivendicazioni territoriali, ma dietro un progetto di sterminio così completo, articolato, lucido e perfettamente condotto ci vuole qualcosa di più. Così come ci vuole qualcosa di più per trasformare il pacifico vicino in uno spietato aguzzino, e far sì che un intero popolo commetta atti di cui di solito si macchiano solo le frange più estreme e instabili di una popolazione normale. Molte risposte le ho trovate in questo volume, così chiaro e ben documentato, tanti tasselli del puzzle nazismo - popolo tedesco sono finalmente andati al loro posto. Una lettura davvero importante.

Un grande amore è un grande amore, anche nella Cina di Mao, ed è motore sufficiente perché la protagonista, dopo aver appreso la notizia della presunta morte dell'amato marito aggregato come medico all'esercito cinese in Tibet, decida di seguirne le orme, essendo lei stessa medico. Ma in un posto selvaggio, desolato, e con una identità forte come il Tibet, lei finirà per perdere in parte la sua identità.
Il libro è ben scritto e scorre bene, nonostante ciò non riesce mai a coinvolgere nel profondo. Il mutamento morale della protagonista, da donna della "Nuova" Cina a fervente buddista, sembra più dettato da una sorta di abitudine che da una vera influenza morale, senza contare che l'atteggiamento politico nei confronti dell'invasione cinese del Tibet è molto da "piedi in due scarpe".

Ammetto di aver iniziato a leggere questo libro con un certo sospetto: avendo fatto a suo tempo una certa indigestione di Anne Rice, ho definitivamente smesso di leggere libri sui vampiri. Se non che questo non è un libro sui vampiri, ma su creature molto più interessanti, vale a dire gli angeli caduti e la loro progenie semiumana. Partendo dalla leggenda che gli angeli esiliati dal Paradiso ancora oggi trascinino le loro vite immortali, attendendo con disperazione il giorno del giudizio, quando le loro anime finiranno all'inferno, il bel libro di Katie Young narra una storia di amore e tradimento, di passione e odio, ma soprattutto dell'invidia degli angeli nei confronti di noi mortali, invidia che è il peccato originale che ne ha causato la caduta. E questa invidia a quanto pare è inestinguibile, dato che è questo sentimento a minare la saldezza morale dell'Arcangelo Uriel, che per distruggere l'umanità darà vita a una serie di terribili eventi capaci di scatenare il Giudizio Universale.
Bel libro che una volta iniziato è molto difficile mettere da parte.




I admit I started reading this book with some suspicion: having done some indigestion of Anne Rice books, I finally stopped reading stories about vampires. Except that this is not a book about vampires, but on creatures much more interesting, namely the fallen angels and their offspring, half-human. Starting from the legend that angels exiled from Paradise still drag their immortal lives, waiting in despair the day of judgment, when their souls end up in hell, the fine book by Katie Young tells a story of love and betrayal, passion and hate, but mostly envy of the angels against us mortals, that envy is the original sin that caused the fall. And that envy is apparently unquenchable, as this sentiment undermines the moral firmness of the Archangel Uriel, who to destroy humanity give rise to a series of terrible events that can trigger the Last Judgement.
Beautiful book that once started is very difficult to put aside.

Francia terra di commissari, a cominciare dal leggendario Maigret di Simenon, passando dallo stralunato Adamsberg della Vargas per approdare al fascinoso Sirsky della Molay, che si trova ad aver a che fare con un dotato serial killer che intende uccidere sette donne in sette giorni e che afferma di attuare in questo modo una sorta di vendetta personale nei confronti del bel Nico.
E in effetti il killer mostra di essere sempre un passo avanti rispetto alla polizia e di essere in grado di depistare a suo piacimento le forse dell'ordine, gettando mortiferi sospetti persino su persone vicinissime all'indagine.
Bel giallo, molto ben scritto, con una eccezionale definizione dei personaggi, a cui posso rimproverare solo di essere, per certi versi, poco francese e troppo americano.


France land of chiefs of police, beginning with the legendary Simenon's Maigret, going from the distressed Vargas' Adamsberg to achieve the charming Molay's Sirsky, that is to have something to do with a gifted serial killer who intends to kill seven women in seven days and that states to implement in this way a sort of personal vendetta against the beautiful Nico.
And in fact the killer proves to be always a step ahead of the police and to be able to throw off at will the police, throwing deadly suspicion even of people very close to the investigation.
Beautiful thriller, very well written, with a great definition of the characters, which can only be criticized for, in some ways, to be few French and too much American.

Lei è bellissima, figlia di un uomo ricchissimo e potente, intelligentissima, sagacissimo avvocato, ma ovviamente è insicura, non crede che un uomo possa amarla per quello che è e non per il potere di suo padre; lui è una specie di enorme e affascinante uomo delle caverne, e ovviamente si innamora di lei al primo colpo. Se non che lei è in pericolo, perché qualcuno la sta minacciando, e assieme a lei i suoi amici e la sua famiglia, e lei non si fida di nessuno, e per certi versi nemmeno di lui.
Ma alla fine l'amore, unito a una dose industriale di sano sesso, trionfano, persino sulla matrigna cattiva.
Nonostante la trama piuttosto banale e la discrepanza tra alcuni flash apparentemente attribuibili al possibile futuro assassino e il finale della storia, il libro è ben scritto e accattivante.

Un gigante galeotto che durante la ricerca della sua perduta amata si lascia dietro qualche morto di troppo. La solita polizia corruttibile e corrotta, ambigui dottori della psiche, altri dottori, presunti come medici ma certi come spacciatori, il solito Marlowe e una donna così bella che basta una sua foto per "non rispondere più di se stessi". La storia sembra dipanarsi in una direzione, poi si intrica e si complica, e infine si dipana in una scia di cadaveri.
Purtroppo il libro risente di una traduzione pericolante, lo cercherò in lingua originale, penso che ne godrò assai di più.

Un complicato plot che vede muoversi poliziotti inglesi, piloti da guerra polacchi, grandi truffatori internazionali, ladri, spie e un consistente carico d'oro, sul poco raccomandabile sfondo della Battaglia d'Inghilterra, l'estremo tentativo della Germania Nazista di invadere la Gran Bretagna, la cui mancata riuscita fu probabilmente il primo segnale della possibilità di sconfiggere quello che sembrava un nemico invincibile.
Il libro è, appunto, complesso, affascinante, ben scritto, con caratteri definiti a tutto tondo, che siano protagonisti o semplici comparse. L'unico momento di cedimento, ragione per la quale ho assegnato 3 stelle invece che 4, è la scena che si svolge ai tempi di Montezuma, che poteva essere evitata senza che il romanzo ne risentisse.

Ci sono libri che andrebbero letti una sola volta, per conservare intatta la magia della scoperta di una narrazione diversa da quella normalmente sperimentata, perché la storia continui a scintillare intatta nella memoria, senza che la ripetizione di una narrazione conosciuta la faccia scivolare in secondo piano rispetto al modo in cui è narrata.
Questo è quanto mi è successo rileggendo a moltissimi anni di distanza Creatura di sabbia.
L'eccesso di parole si è mangiato la storia, che pure trovavo e trovo ancora bellissima e originale,l'ha messa sullo sfondo, e ha dato spazio alla noia.

Una parte di Olocausto non molto conosciuta, quella relativa agli internati spagnoli nei campi di concentramento nazisti, prigionieri di guerra diventati a tutti gli effetti prigionieri politici.
Un libro tutto sommato insolito nel panorama degli scritti sull'argomento, perché, pur non mancando la descrizione delle terribili violenze perpetrate dai torturatori nazisti sui prigionieri, si basa più sull'approfondimento della psicologia di tutti i personaggi coinvolti. Si ha così un'analisi dettagliata della forma mentis dei tedeschi, SS e prigionieri comuni usati come kapò; dei prigionieri comunisti con la loro ansia di fare proselitismo, di coloro che, sottomessi allo spirito del campo, hanno dimenticato la loro umanità, il tutto filtrato attraverso gli occhi di Emili, il disegnatore, che sembra l'unico essere umano in un mondo di mostri.


A part of the Holocaust not very well known, that relating to the Spaniards interned in Nazi concentration camps, prisoners of war that have become to all intents political prisoners.
A book altogether unusual in view of the writings on the subject, because, while not lacking in the description of the terrible violence perpetrated by Nazi torturers on prisoners, is based more on the deepening of the psychology of all the characters involved. Thus there is a detailed analysis of the mindset of the German SS and criminal prisoners used as Kapo; Communist prisoners with their anxiety to proselytize, to those who subdued the spirit of the field, they forgot their humanity; all filtered through the eyes of Emili, the designer, which seems to be the only human in a world of monsters.

Un thriller fantascientifico e ucronico ambientato nel paleolitico, il cui protagonista è un uomo degli spiriti nel cui animo è saldamente piantato il seme del dubbio. Quando però una serie di omicidi sconvolgono la sua tribù, le sue notti iniziano a essere infestate da sogni ambientati in un lontano futuro nel quale di lui è rimasto solo il teschio fossile, e della natura che lui conosceva non è rimasto nulla. L'unico modo per scongiurare l'orribile futuro che l'uomo sogna è quello di trovare l'esecutore degli omicidi, per poter purificare dal male la sua tribù e di conseguenza tutta l'umanità. Libro ben scritto, attento ai dettagli della vita paleolitica, e a tratti umoristico. Il colpevole sembra fare di tutto per farsi scoprire, ma questo non diminuisce la piacevolezza della storia.

An ucronic sci-fi thriller set in the Paleolithic, whose protagonist is a man of spirits in whose mind is firmly planted the seed of doubt. But when a series of murders upset his tribe, his nights begin to be haunted by dreams set in a distant future in which only the fossil skull is left of him and nothing remains of the environment that he knew. The only way to prevent the horrible future that the man dreams, is to find the perpetrator of the murders, in order to cleanse evil from his tribe and therefore all mankind. Well-written book, attentive to the details of Paleolithic life, and at times humorous. The culprit seems to be doing everything possible to be discovered, but this does not diminish the enjoyment of the story.

The Backwash Of War

Probabilmente cogliendo l'occasione del centesimo anniversario dello scoppio della prima guerra mondiale, viene ripubblicata questa piccola ma densa raccolta di racconti scritti da un personaggio eccezionale come Ellen La Motte. Infermiera e giornalista, la La Motte servì come infermiera negli ospedali da campo, e testimoniò la totale assurdità della guerra e la depravazione morale causata dalla guerra stessa a tutte le persone coinvolte, che fossero soldati, ufficiali, medici o civili. I suoi racconti sono così crudi e impietosi da essere stati a suo tempo banditi perché dannosi per il morale dei belligeranti. Dal punto di vista puramente letterario, a volte la scrittura è un po' ripetitiva, ma le immagini evocate sono talmente forti e inquietanti da rendere scarsamente evidente questo problema di stile.

Probably taking the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, this small but dense collection of stories written by a great character like Ellen La Motte is republished. Nurse and journalist, La Motte served as a nurse in field hospitals, and witnessed the utter absurdity of war and the moral depravity caused by the war itself of all the people involved, whether they were soldiers, officers, doctors or civilians. His stories are so raw and merciless as they were at the time banned because detrimental to the morale of the belligerents. From a purely literary point of view, sometimes the writing is a bit repetitive, but the images evoked are so strong and disturbing to make not very evident this issue of style.

Un interessante saggio che tratta di alcune vicende poco conosciute avvenute nel corso, e soprattutto alla fine, della seconda guerra mondiale, vale a dire le attività che hanno alla fine portato alla resa dell'Italia, all'Armistizio e al suo cambiamento di fronte. Vicende per loro natura poco conosciute, in quanto aventi a che fare con attività di intelligence, e testimoniate in documenti secretati fino a pochi anni fa.
Nonostante sia documentatissimo e molto ben scritto, il libro finisce per essere involontariamente comico, soprattutto se letto da un'italiana, perché attraverso questa lettura si apprende che i famosi servizi segreti di Sua Maestà Britannica, e in special modo la branca destinata alla supervisione delle attività sul territorio italiano, si servivano di benintenzionati sprovveduti, del tutto all'oscuro sia del territorio che della lingua, e per questo menati per il naso per anni dai servizi segreti fascisti, capaci di inventare organizzazioni partigiane e atti di sabotaggio del tutto inesistenti, e, addirittura, di farsi foraggiare di soldi ed esplosivi direttamente dai britannici. Senza contare che, tramite agenti doppi, i servizi segreti fascisti riuscirono a mettere le mani su alcuni autentici patrioti che cercavano di mettersi in contatto con gli inglese, uno fra tutti Adriano Olivetti. Pare che insomma il vero lavoro di cambiare l'atteggiamento del popolo italiano, fino a renderlo favorevole a una resa, siano stati piuttosto i pesanti bombardamenti aerei che sfiancarono la popolazione fino al momento della resa vera e propria.
Una lettura interessante e consigliabile a tutti gli appassionati di storia.



An interesting essay on some little-known events that took place during, and especially at the end of the Second World War, namely the activities that eventually led to the surrender of Italy, the Armistice and Italy's change of front. Events by their nature poorly understood, as having to do with intelligence activities, and witnessed in confidential documents until a few years ago.
Although it is well documented and very well written, the book ends up being unintentionally funny, especially when read by an Italian, because reading through this we learn that the famous secret service of His Majesty, and especially the branch intended for the supervision of activities on the Italian territory, used to be well-meaning naive, completely unaware of both the territory and the language, and then teased for years by the fascist secret services, capable of inventing non-existent partisan organizations and acts of sabotage, and, indeed, to be foraging for money and explosives directly by the British. Not to mention that, through double agents, fascist secret services managed to get their hands on some authentic patriots who tried to get in touch with the English, one among all Adriano Olivetti. It seems that in fact the real work of changing the attitude of the Italian people, to make it conducive to surrender, were rather made by the heavy aerial bombardment that extenuated the population up to the time of the surrender itself.
An interesting read and recommended to all lovers of history.

Dal punto di vista della scrittura, il libro si legge bene, Il taglio è giornalistico, i fatti sono presentati in modo scarno, con poche concessioni al sentimentalismo, i dialoghi e le descrizioni realistici. Quello che lascia perplessi è la trama: troppe volte l'autore inserisce scene in cui fornisce indizi che poi non sviluppa (una tra tutte: la lunga conversazione tra Lily e Mary, che sarebbe carica di conseguenze e sviluppi, e invece è messa lì solo per far sapere che la prima è incinta, senza contare che quella scena contiene delle informazioni che rendono un po' assurdo quello che succede dopo), e la conclusione è, per certi versi, priva di connessione con la storia, per altri versi invece, scontata.




From the point of view of writing, the book reads well, the cut is journalism, facts are presented in a bare, with few concessions to sentimentality, realistic dialogues and descriptions. What is perplexing is the plot: too often the author includes scenes in which it provides evidence that never develops (one of all: the long conversation between Lily and Mary, who would be charged with consequences and developments, and instead is put there only to let people know that Lily is pregnant, not to mention that the scene contains information that make it a bit absurd what happens next), and the conclusion is, in some ways, devoid of any connection with the story, in other respects however, granted.

Long Live the Dead: Smashing Detective Stories

E' estremamente raro che io assegni il punteggio massimo a una raccolta di racconti, ma d'altra parte quando il materiale tra cui scegliere attraversa 40 anni di una prolifica e qualitativamente eccellente carriera, scegliere il meglio non è difficile.
I racconti di questa raccolta hanno in comune il fatto di essere stati pubblicati su una famosa rivista pulp intitolata Black Mask, una delle fanzine molto diffuse negli Stati Uniti a cavallo tra le due guerre, e che tanto hanno contribuito alla diffusione della letteratura popolare, consegnandoci gran parte dell'immaginario che noi oggi conosciamo.
Come dicevo, il livello dei racconti è eccellente, anche se a volte datato, soprattutto quando si parla dei rapporti tra sessi, improntati a una lieve misoginia.
Una menzione particolare per l'ultimo racconto, Stranger in town, un autentico capolavoro.



It is extremely rare that I assign the maximum score to a collection of short stories, but on the other hand, when the material to choose from through 40 years of a prolific and excellent in quality career , the best choice is not difficult.
The stories in this collection have in common the fact that they were published in a popular pulp magazine called Black Mask, one of the fanzine widespread in the United States at the turn of the wars, and which have greatly contributed to the spread of popular literature, giving us largely the imaginary that we know today.
As I said, the level of the stories is excellent, although sometimes dated, especially when it comes to the relations between the sexes, marked by a slight misogyny.
A special mention for the last story, Stranger in town, a true masterpiece.

Virtual Immortality

A volte avere letto molto nel corso della propria vita può essere un handycapp, perché diventa quasi inevitabile "pescare" da dove vengono le idee alla base di un nuovo romanzo.
Nonostante questo costante senso di dejà vù, mi sono goduta abbastanza questo lungo romanzo di fantascienza con qualche incursione nel fantasy. All'inizio sono stata un po' infastidita da qualche discontinuità nella narrazione, nonostante fosse chiaro che i due protagonisti principali fossero destinati a incontrarsi e amarsi, l'alternanza dei capitoli contenenti le avventure dell'uno o dell'altra, rigorosamente separati mi è sembrata un po' eccessiva. Nella seconda metà invece i tempi si sono un po' accelerati e la storia mi è sembrata meglio amalgamata.
Il libro non guadagna il punteggio pieno perché alcuni episodi sono solo di raccordo e avrebbero potuto essere sbrigati con un minor numero di pagine, e perché il finale è scontatissimo.


Sometimes to have read a lot in the course of your live can be a handycap, because it becomes almost inevitable "to fish" where the ideas at the base of a new novel come from.
Despite this constant sense of deja vu, I enjoyed this long science fiction novel with a few forays into fantasy. At first I was a bit annoyed by some discontinuity in the narrative, although it was clear that the two main characters were destined to meet and love each other, the alternating of chapters containing the adventures of one or the other, strictly separated, seemed me a bit too much. In the second half instead the times are a bit accelerated, and the story seemed better blended.
The book does not earn full points because some episodes are only fittings and could have been hurry up with fewer pages, and because the ending is discounted.

Death-Watch

Un assassinio pretestuoso e arzigogolato, messo in opera con uno strumento fuori dal comune, da un personaggio dalla psicologia improbabile. Una metodica di indagine indiziaria al limite della nebulosità e personaggi caricaturali rendono questo corposo giallo classico inglese uno dei più noiosi che abbia mai letto.
Senza contare che la quarta di copertina è fuorviante.

A pretentious and convoluted murder , put in place with a tool out of the ordinary, from a character with an unlikely psychology. A method of investigation based on evidence at the limit of nebulosity and caricature characters make this full-bodied classic yellow English one of the most boring I've ever read.
Not to mention that the back cover is misleading.

The Butterfly and the Violin

Come ho già notato in altri romanzi, anche in questo caso l'altalenare della storia tra passato e presente produce un effetto non particolarmente piacevole. In realtà sembra di leggere due romanzi, scritti da due autori diversi, con diverso linguaggio e diverse capacità di gestire storia e personaggi, i cui capitoli si alternano.
Le parti relative alla storia di Adele, il suo amore per Vladimir, la sua presa di coscienza nei confronti del suo background nazista, il suo accettare il campo di concentramento con l'aiuto di una fede santificante, sono semplicemente strepitose.
I capitoli contemporanei, la ricerca da parte di Sera del dipinto che ritrae Adele, il suo stesso personaggio, tanto insicuro e petulante quanto Adele è perfetta e luminosa, il suo innamoramento nei confronti di William, che ha il sapore del pretesto letterario, e persino il citare Dio e la fede, sembrano dei meri riempitivi.
Qualche svarione di troppo, tipo il non accorgersi della bellezza di William quando è vestito da giardiniere, e definirlo poi l'uomo più affascinante mai visto quando, poco dopo, ha indossato i panni di uomo d'affari.





As I've already noted in other novels, also in this case the seesawing of the history between past and present produces a not particularly pleasant effect. In fact it seems to read two novels, written by two different authors, with different language and different capacities to manage the story and characters, whose chapters alternate.
The parties related to the history of Adele, her love for Vladimir, her grip of conscience against her Nazi background, her accepting the life in the extermination camp with the help of a sanctifying faith, are simply amazing.
The chapters in the present, Sera's search of the painting that portrays Adele, his own character, so insecure and petulant as Adele is perfect and bright, her falling in love against William, who has the flavor of literary pretext, and even the mention God and faith, seem mere fillers.
Some blunders too, like Sera not noticing the beauty of William when he is dressed as a gardener, and then say that the man is the most charmingly she ever seen when, shortly after, he dresses the part of businessman.

The Artful

Piacevole romanzo di formazione ambientato in uno strano futuro prossimo dove un virus ha ucciso metà della popolazione, e i cui effetti collaterali costringono la rimanente metà a rifuggire dal sole; in una New York ridotta a feudale teatro di guerre tra piccole signorie straccione.
In questo scenario si muovono i due protagonisti, sorta di Tom Sawyer e Huckleberry Finn redivivi, tra molte avventure che in qualche modo richiamano i molti romanzi ai quali l'autore deve sicuramente la sua formazione come scrittore.
Opera prima intrigante, con una buona tenuta di trama, e capace di tenere ben desta l'attenzione del lettore.


Pleasant Bildungsroman set in a near future where a strange virus has killed half the population, and whose side effects forcing the remaining half to shy away from the sun; in a New York reduced to a theater for feudal wars between small ragged lordships.
In this scenario, move the two main characters, a sort of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn revived, among many adventures that somehow recall the many novels in which the author surely owe his training as a writer.
Intriguing debut novel, with a good tightof the plot, and well able to keep alive the attention of the reader.

Holy War

A volte capita che, aprendo un libro, immediatamente ne venga in mente un altro, e da quel momento in avanti è impossibile evitare il confronto.
Nel momento in cui ho aperto Holy war mi è venuto in mente Inshallah ed è stato molto difficile per me evitare di paragonare il preciso, dolente, analitico romanzo della Fallaci con questo, forse più adrenalinico, ma assai meno profondo.
Nonostante ciò, Holy war è un bel romanzo, anche se non tutti i personaggi sono ugualmente ben riusciti. Rosa, per esempio, è praticamente unidimensionale; Mohammed, colui che tutti vogliono uccidere, troppo stupido perché lo si possa anche solo lontanamente sospettare di una qualsiasi capacità politica; le varie donne di Neil delle pure citazioni. Nella parte finale il romanzo acquista spessore. Tutto sommato una piacevole lettura.


Sometimes it happens that, opening a book, another immediately comes to mind, and from that point on, it is impossible to avoid confrontation.
The moment I opened Holy war, Inshallah came to my mind, and it was very hard for me not to compare the precise, cogent and sorrowful Oriana Fallaci's novel with this one, perhaps more adrenalinic but much less intense.
Nevertheless, Holy war is a good novel, though not all characters are equally well managed. Rosa, for example, is virtually one-dimensional; Mohammed, who all want to kill, too stupid because you can even remotely suspect him of any political capacity; the various Neil's women pure citations. In the final part the novel acquires depth. All in all an enjoyable read.

L'assedio nazista di Stalingrado, ovvero il momento in cui il corso della storia, che sembrava voler consegnare l'Europa al reich millenario, è cambiato. L'eroismo di quella città martire, dei suoi abitanti indomiti, che ha insegnato di nuovo agli invasori una lezione evidentemente non ben compresa ai tempi di Napoleone.
All'interno di questa cornice eroica c'è una storia piccola, per certi versi tragicomica, che mostra come persino all'interno di una città assediata e che muore di fame c'è chi muore un po' di più e chi un po' di meno.
Ed ecco che una improbabile coppia di eroi, un soldato disertore e un ragazzino beccato a saccheggiare un cadavere tedesco, viene mandata in missione per conto di un alto capo del partito, missione assurda e per certi versi un po' ignobile, che però permetterà ai due di mostrare di che pasta sono veramente fatti.
Tra tutti i personaggi emerge quello di Kolja, il soldato disertore, un autentico russo come se ne trovano nei romanzi di Tolstoj.
Avrebbe meritato cinque stelle, non fosse stato per qualche congiuntivo sbagliato di troppo nella traduzione italiana.

Jaspar's War

Io credo fermamente nel principio di realtà, cioè nel fatto che, una volta stabilito il sistema di valori entro il quale la storia si svolge, a quel sistema di valori il romanzo si deve attenere, sempre.
Questo significa che se del sistema di valori fa parte il concetto che gli asini volano, ci troveremo probabilmente di fronte a un fantasy, e gli asini voleranno senza in alcun modo ledere il principio di realtà.
Il sistema di valori a contorno di questo romanzo è quello nostro di tutti i giorni, non ci sono alterazioni per quanto riguarda la fisica o la chimica dei corpi, magie, illusioni e quant'altro, e questo fa sì che dopo le prime pagine la storia diventi a poco a poco sempre meno credibile (che non è la stessa cosa di "più incredibile").
Questo libro potrà forse piacere a un lettore di bocca buona, che vuole una storia adrenalinica senza porsi domande sulla storia stessa, a chi invece vuole un buon romanzo d'azione, sicuramente no.

The Poor Man's Guide to Suicide

Una novella scritta con una tecnica simile a quella del flusso di coscienza, nella quale un uomo, di mestiere guardia carceraria, esamina le molteplici ragioni del suo fallimento e nel frattempo parla in modo molto diretto della società americana in generale e della gestione delle carceri in particolare. Il protagonista è un vero perdente, uno di quelli che passano la vita da una parte a dolersi dei propri errori e dall'altra e cercare soggetti su cui scaricare le proprie responsabilità, e per questo, in un qualche modo, si prova simpatia per lui, per quella sua piccolezza che è anche nostra.
Tutto questo va avanti, e anche piuttosto bene, fino ai capitoli finali, quando avviene una modifica sostanziale della personalità del protagonista. Nel corso della storia è abbastanza ovvio che una svolta prima o poi ci sarà, ma la modalità scelta dall'autore è decisamente quella peggiore.

A novel written with a technique similar to that of the stream of consciousness, in which a man, by trade a prison guard, examines the many reasons for hisfailure and meanwhile speaks in a very direct way of American society in general and the management of prisons in particular. The protagonist is a real loser, the kind of man that spends his live on one side lamenting his mistakes, and on the other looking for someone on which to discharge his responsibilities,and therefore, in some way, you feel sympathy for him for the smallness that is also yours.
All this goes on, and also pretty good, until the final chapters, when there is a substantial change in the personality of the protagonist. Throughout history it is quite obvious that a breakthrough sooner or later there will be, but the method chosen by the author is definitely the worst.

Courier

Tutti abbiamo sentito parlare del Watergate e di come questo scandalo abbia costretto Nixon alle dimissioni. Irvine ci racconta invece un'altra storia che coinvolge Tricky Dicky, come è stato soprannominato il peggior e più corrotto presidente che gli Stati Uniti abbiamo mai avuto.
La storia, davvero orrenda, viene scoperta per caso da un reduce dal Vietnam, un sopravvissuto ai Cong che, in sella alla sua potente moto nera, si guadagna da vivere facendo il corriere per una testata giornalistica. Le qualità che l'hanno salvato in Vietnam lo faranno sopravvivere ai numerosi tentativi di ucciderlo per chiudergli la bocca sulla verità che ha accidentalmente scoperto.
Abbastanza ben scritto e adrenalinico, il romanzo ha, a parer mio, troppe descrizioni eccessivamente tecniche del comportamento di una moto in corsa, senza contare che i tre proto haker, usati e poi dimenticati dall'autore in un rifugio sicuro, avrebbero potuto essere gestiti meglio per rendere più divertente la storia.


We've all heard of the Watergate scandal and how this has forced Nixon to resign. Irvine instead tells us another story that involves Tricky Dicky, as it has been dubbed the worst and most corrupt president that the United States have ever had.
The story, really horrible, is discovered by chance by a Vietnam veteran, a survivor of Cong, who earn a living as a courier for a newspaper riding his powerful black motorcycl. The qualities that have saved him in Vietnam will make him survive the numerous attempts to kill him to shut his mouth about the truth that has accidentally discovered.
Fairly well written and fast-paced, the novel has, in my opinion, too many overly technical descriptions of the behavior of a motorcycle racing, not to mention that the three proto haker , used and then forgotten by the author in a safe haven, they could be managed best to make the story more fun.
