The Drowned Boy

The Drowned BoyKarin Fossum
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A child drowned in a pool, for everyone a horrible accident, but not for the inspector Sejer. For him something don't happens to be, because of that mother too young and too bright, and because the child has Down syndrome. And yet he can't find anything that could support his intuition, even when the autopsy shows that the baby did not die in the puddle, and will not find anything it until the end, in a last page that might have been better was not written, and that is the only fall of style in a thriller otherwise perfect.
Thank toRandom House UK and Netgalley for giving me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Tales of Ivan Levsky

Tales of Ivan Levsky Trefor Stockwell
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Funny, magic and poetic stories, a world that is around the corner and yet we do not know. Stories that come from the depths of history and that seem very modern, and others that seem taken from ancient myths and instead narrate events that occurred a few years ago, all with the hypnotic phrasing of the storyteller of the village, the one used to narrate to the half drunk regulars of a tavern stories of which they themselves are protagonists without they are able to recognize.
Obviously not all the stories have the same quality, and in some the stretch on the oral narration is a bit too much, but this book is all the same a delightful reading.

Revival

RevivalStephen King
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Captured

Captured Neil Cross
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A man is diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor that gives him few weeks of life, and then, as many would do in the same situation, he decided to put in place some slopes of the past. This is the foundation from which this interesting and quite intricate thriller starts, which sees the protagonist to pass several times from victim to perpetrator while desperately trying to clarify the fate of a school girl friend, the only one who showed him mercy when he was the victim of bullying, before the disease kills him.
Pleasant book, well written, and full of surprises, just a few unrealistic scenes prevents in turning up the score.

Sausages, Steam, and the Bad Thing

Sausages, Steam, and the Bad Thing Rachael Acks
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A series of short stories and a novel, all with Captain of pirates Marta Ramos as a star, with her crew, her enemies and her friends, and set in the curious future-like (or past-like?) made of steam and brass that forms the background the adventures of steampunk genre. A book, so to speak, for children, but also very fun for us so-called adults, with characters always a little over the lines and that respects all the rules of a genre that has very few rules.
Since this is a collection, some unevenness in the quality of its components prevents from giving a higher vote.

The Dancer and the Raja - The True story of the Princess of Kapurthala

The Dancer and the Raja - The True story of the Princess of Kapurthala

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have always said that a good historical novel can give more information than any history book on the period of which it speaks. This is because a good historical novel combines a high level of trust relating to the places, the times, the relationship between the characters really existed, with a fictional part that makes these characters alive, built by studying in depth the personality. The Dancer and the Raja is from all points of view a good historical novel whose main character, Anita Delgado - a very young dancer of Spanish origin become by wedding an Indian princess - moves on the background of Belle Epoque and of the strict moral code of Anglo-Indian society of the Victorian era. Very well written, with all-round characters, and very well documented from the point of view of historic histor, you must remember that it is still a novel, and therefore those who are described as the feelings and relationships between the various protagonists are fruit of the imagination of the author.

Tess Gerritsen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A true professional is he (or she) who makes you feel safe, secure, makes you feel that someone cares about you, weather you're in the African bush as lying in your bed to dispose of a mild illness whyle reading. This is what did Tess Gerritsen today for me with this beautiful thriller, charged-up at the right point, complicated and difficult to decipher until the last, like any good thriller should be. Characters and settings described to perfection, with the only flaw of some incursions into the past of the two protagonists that make sense only to those who have read the entire series from the start and that can disturb those who, like me, do not care of serial.

Honestly I do not know what to say about this book. From the theoretical point of view would have all the elements to please me, and some steps are really good, from the practical point of view, however, is often confused, the characters are not solved, too much meat is put on the fire with the result of not allowing to understand who does what and why, not to mention that many of the characters are of a total and utter stupidity.

The Fall of Language in the Age of English

The Fall of Language in the Age of EnglishMinae Mizumura
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The one about the overflowing preponderance of English, that gradually becoming the hegemonic language in the world, is a very lively and very interesting debate, and the arguments set out by the writer Minae Mizumura are very interesting, as is the thesis of bilingualism becoming a necessity for those who want to move, at any level, in today's world. As I said all very interesting, although in many ways not entirely original, until the thread does not enter deeply into the problem of Japan.
I am fond of Japanese literature, and I read several of the authors cited as an example of modern classical literature of that nation, Mishima first, loving them so much, as I read more recent authors, including the acclaimed Murakami, obtaining instead a sort of annoyance. The one that Mizimura describes is, in effect, a true linguistic catastrophe, implemented with very little foresight by the Japanese themselves, something which I deeply regret.
Small note of costume: I hope that this book will never be translated into Italian. Most Italian rulers are not bilingual, and therefore are not able to read how strenuously pursued the Japanese government the scourge of their own language, could avoid they have some ideas on how to more effectively pursue a goal that apparently have already set about the Italian language.
