Marion cresce credendo di essere orfana, fino a quando un esecutore testamentario non le fa scoprire che non solo suo padre non è morto quando lei era piccola, ma che era anche un importantissimo collezionista di arte precolombiana, e che lei, se solo troverà tre pezzi della sua collezione misteriosamente scomparsi, riceverà un'eredità miliardaria. Così Marion, che pure al mondo dell'arte non è estranea, si ritrova a muoversi in un ambiente ancora più rarefatto e asfittico, nel quale la natura stessa delle opere, la loro origine misteriosa ed elusiva, la loro stranezza e la loro ricchezza istigano inesorabilmente al delitto.
Romanzo interessante, ma che ha tutti i difetti di un'opera prima, in termini di poco approfondimento psicologico dei personaggi e scarsa credibilità di molti passaggi.





Marion grows believing to be an orphan, until an executor find out that not only her father doesn't died when she was small, but was also an important collector of pre-Columbian art, and that she, if only she will find three pieces mysteriously disappeared from his collection, receive a billionaire inheritance. So Marion, who also is no stranger to the art world, find herself moving in an even more rarefied and feeble framework, in which the nature of the works, their mysterious and elusive origin, their strangeness and their wealth incite inexorably to the crime.
Interesting novel, but that has all the defects of a first work, in terms of little psychological depth of the characters and lack of credibility of many passages.

Tutto quello che avreste voluto sapere sui denti e non avete mai osato chiedere. Un simpatico libretto sui denti, la loro funzione e la loro evoluzione, a partire dal "tubo primigenio" per arrivare alle scimmie antropomorfe e agli esseri umani. Scritto con un linguaggio semplice e preciso, con pochi ma calzanti aneddoti e disegni esplicativi di buona qualità. Un saggio, ma più divertente di parecchi romanzi.


Everything you ever wanted to know about teeth and never dared to ask. A nice book on the teeth, their function and their evolution, from the "primitive pipe" to the apes and the humans. Written in simple and clear language, with few but apt anecdotes and good quality explicatory drawings. An essay, but more funny than many novels.

The C Enigma

L'immaginario nazista ha fatto molte vittime, Spiros Gratsias è una di queste. The C Enigma è una brutta copia del Codice Da Vinci (che già era brutto) in termini di società segrete e complottismo, e credo che possa con facilità vincere il campionato mondiale delle scopiazzature da Internet in termini di notizie prese di peso da Wikipedia e inserite nel testo. Un lavoro da furbacchioni, non c'è che dire, che permette di aumentare senza troppa fatica il numero di pagine. I personaggi sono decisamente poco credibili e la scrittura è noiosa ai limiti del sopportabile. In più la copia in mio possesso è piena di errori di grammatica e ortografia.
Impresentabile.



The Nazi imagery has made many victims, Spiros Gratsias is one of them. The C Enigma is a bad copy of The Da Vinci Code (which was already bad) in terms of secret societies and conspiracy, and I think it can easily win the world championship of rip-off of Internet in terms of information taken from Wikipedia and entered directly in the text. A work for smartass, no doubt about it, which allows to improve the number of pages without much effort. The characters are definitely not credible and the writing is boring to the limits of the bearable. In addition, the copy I have is full of mistakes in grammar and spelling.
Unpresentable.

La strana e lunga storia di un uomo che si chiama Connor Herne, una vita segnata dal peccato originale della menzogna e dell'omicidio, una specie di storia moderna di un bambino scambiato. Connor cresce in una famiglia che non è la sua, tormentato da una sorella che è l'unica depositaria del segreto della sua nascita, senza riuscire a sfuggire al mondo claustrofobico delle monagne traforate di miniere di carbone pronte a diventare discariche abusive di rifiuti nucleari. Un libro un po' particolare, con molte cose in sospeso, come è naturale per un volume che fa parte di una serie, con alcuni colpi di scena non proprio ortodossi, ma con il grande pregio di presentare un protagonista del tutto credibile.





The strange and long history of a man named Connor Herne, a life marked by an original sin of lying and murder, a kind of modern history of the exchanged child. Connor grows up in a family that is not his, tormented by a sister who is the sole repository of the secret of his birth, unable to escape the claustrophobic world of the mountains drilled of coal mines and ready to become illegal dumping of nuclear waste. A book a bit special, with many loose ends, as is natural for a volume that is part of a series, with some twists not quite orthodox, but with the great advantage of presenting a character totally believable.

Basic Law: A Mystery of Cold War Europe

Una specie di complicata caccia al tesoro che parte dal suicidio di una nota esponente politica della sinistra tedesca ai tempi della guerra fredda per raccontare come, anche nella Germania post unificazione, siano ancora vivi e presenti gli ideali nazisti e di come, dietro il paravento del neonazismo più becero, ci siano in realtà al lavoro forze politiche ed economiche che sfruttano per i propri interessi il disagio sociale. Nonostante alcune ingenuità tipicamente americane - americano è l'autore e americani sono alcuni dei suoi protagonisti, il che da al loro essere naif una patina di credibilità - e nonostante la sua lunghezza e complicazione, con continui cambiamenti e rivolgimenti nella storia, è un ottimo romanzo che unisce intrattenimento e realtà storica.


A kind of complicated treasure hunt that starts from the suicide of a famous exponent of the German left politics at the time of the Cold War to tell how, even in the Germany after unification, Nazis ideals are still alive and present and how, behind the screen of the most vulgar neo-Nazism, political and economic forces are actually working exploiting for their own interests the social hardship. Despite some ingenuity typically American - American is author and Americans are some of its protagonists,thing that gives to their being naive a nuance of credibility - and despite its length and complexity, with constant changes and upheavals in history, this is a great novel that combines entertainment and historical reality.

Jack of Spades

Non sono rimasta completamente soddisfatta da questo romanzo. Sarà forse per il suo sembrare una via di mezzo tra un omaggio e una presa in giro al lavoro di Stepehn King, oppure per la sua trama, forse volutamente già sentita, ma senza quei guizzi che avrebbero potuto trasformare una rimasticatura in qualcosa di completamente nuovo, in qualcosa che presenti il vecchio sotto un inaspettato punto di vista. Il finale poi, è particolarmente debole.
Solo l'ottima scrittura e il grande mestiere dell'autrice salvano questo libro da un punteggio più basso.


I was not completely satisfied with this novel. Perhaps because it looks like a cross between a tribute and a mockery to Stepehn King's work, or for its plot, perhaps deliberately "already heard", but without those flashes that could turn a rehash into something completely new, something that presents the old under an unexpected point of view. The final then, is particularly weak.
Only the excellent writing and the great craft of the author save this book from a lower score.
