Gli antichi dei e gli antichi mostri sono tornati, protetti dal Velo, una magia che permette loro di passare per umani. Dediti alla loro eliminazione sono i Cacciatori, una specie di setta segreta i cui membri si esercitano strenuamente per ucciderne quanti più possibile. In mezzo a questi ultimi spicca Toby, che ha l'insolita peculiarità di poter sollevare il Velo, smascherando così i mostri.
Ma chi è veramente Toby, e, soprattutto, chi sono i suoi veri amici?
Ottimo urban fantasy nel quale il fritto misto di modernità ed epica antica, che costituisce l'impalcatura di qualsiasi opera del genere, è ben dosato, e sorretto da una scrittura di buona qualità.



The ancient gods and the ancient monsters are back, protected by the Veil, a spell that allows them to pass for human. Dedicated to their elimination are the Hunters, a kind of secret society whose members exercise vigorously to kill as many monster as possible. Among the Hunters stands out Toby, who has the unusual characteristic of being able to lift the Veil, thus unmasking the monsters.
But who actually is Toby, and most importantly, who are his real friends?
Great urban fantasy in which the mixed bag of modernity and ancient epic, which is the scaffolding of any work of this kind, is well balanced, and supported by a good quality writing.

La giovane Jelly viene privata dell'amore della sua vita proprio nel giorno del matrimonio. L'omicidio appare inspiegabile e insolubile, ma la sorella maggiore chiama in soccorso una specie di investigatore privato, che, grazie a una testimonianza inaspettata e a metodi molto poco ortodossi, risolve il caso e rimette in carreggiata le vite piuttosto complicate dei protagonisti.
Bel thriller, molto teso, intrigante e assai ben scritto, unico neo: l'autore avrebbe potuto risparmiarci l'accurata descrizione delle pluriquotidiane pratiche igieniche del protagonista principale, così come i suoi outfit.

The young Jelly is deprived of the love of her life on the day of her wedding. The murder appears inexplicable and insoluble, but her older sister calls in rescue a kind of private detective, who, thanks to an unexpected witness and very unorthodox methods, solves the case and puts back on track the rather complicated lives of the protagonists.
Beautiful thriller, very tense, intriguing and very well written, only fly in the ointment: the author could spare us the accurate description of the daily hygiene practice of the main character, as well as his outfit.

The Semester of Our Discontent

In una università americana, una di quelle che sono state fondate l'altro ieri ma che si atteggiano a millenarie case del sapere, arriva una giovane professoressa, e improvvisamente comincia a succede di tutto. Un vecchio professore, figura orribile, viene ritrovato con un coltello nel petto, altre persone, tra cui la nuova arrivata, si ritrovano ferite in vario grado, il fratello del professore morto, accomunato al precedente da professione e stronzaggine, fa la fine del vampiro, e ovunque salta fuori uno strano simbolo riguardo al quale nessuno si presta a fornire spiegazioni.
Tra società segrete, oggetti rituali e quant'altro, alla fine la soluzione dell'enigma viene data da qualcosa di semplice e umano come la gelosia.
Scritto in ottimo inglese, ma da una docente di letteratura mi sarei aspettata una migliore e meno scontata gestione della trama.


In an American university, one of those that were founded only the day before yesterday but that pretend to be thousands of years old houses of knowledge, a young teacher arrives, and suddenly everything happen. An old professor, horrible figure, is found with a knife in the chest, other people, including the newcomer, are found injured in varying degrees, the brother of the professor, associate with the previous both with profession and bloody-mindedness, dies as Vampire die, and everywhere turns up a strange symbol in respect of which no one agrees to provide explanations.
Between secret societies, ritual objects, and so on, the riddle is at the end provided by something as simple and as human jealousy.
Written in good English, but by a professor of literature I would have expected a better and less predictable management of the plot.

Love and Tumult

Un libro con ottime premesse, che però mi è profondamente dispiaciuto. Voglio dire: chi ha dato da intendere all'autore che inserendo una inutile e incongruente storia d'amore in un libro come questo, il libro stesso ne avrebbe ricavato un maggior appeal? Come detto, la storia d'amore, così come il personaggio di Latha sono del tutto surrettizi, ed eliminandoli in toto si farebbe un ottimo servizio a un libro per altri versi interessante, e anche piacevole, nonostante il protagonista si comporti come una di quelle vecchie zitelle timide con le quali non si sa mai bene come trattare.


A book with excellent premises, but that I have deeply regretted. I mean, who gave the author the idea that entering a futile and incongruous love story in a book like this, the book itself would have made a greater appeal? As mentioned, the story of love, as well as the character of Latha, are completely surreptitious, and eliminating them in toto would be a great service at a book in other ways interesting and even enjoyable, despite the main character behaves like one of those old and timid maids with whom you never know well how to treat.

Rose of Sarajevo

La nostra memoria, divorata dalla costante attualità che ci bersaglia da ogni dove, diventa sempre più corta, al punto che facciamo quasi fatica a ricordarci che poco più di dieci anni fa, a pochi chilometri da dove viviamo le nostre vite perennemente sorprese da qualsiasi minaccia, altre persone, che come noi vivevano vite perennemente sorprese da qualsiasi minaccia, e incredule che a loro potesse capitare qualcosa, si sono ritrovate travolte da una guerra. Quando pensiamo alla guerra pensiamo a qualcuno che viene da fuori per portarci via qualcosa che è nostro. E invece no. La guerra che ha travolto e polverizzato la ex Jugoslavia è nata da dentro, fomentata, nutrita e resa ipertrofica da una incredibile valanga di menzogne, e da quel parlare "alla pancia" che è sempre più pericolosamente di moda. Scritto con la mano lieve di un romanzo, e avente come nucleo narrativo una contrastata storia d'amore, Rose of Serajevo scrive un diario preciso, puntuale e brutale degli avvenimenti di una guerra scatenata in nome di un'etnia e di una religione, entrambi concetti che servono solo a stendere una pallida mano di necessità sull'ingordigia e sulla cattiveria cieca.


Our memory, consumed by the constant latest news that targets us from everywhere, become shorter and shorter, to the point that is almost hard to remember that just over ten years ago, not far from where we live our lives perpetually surprises from any threat, other people, that as we lived lives perpetually surprises from any threat, and in disbelief that something could happen to them, found themselves overwhelmed by a war. When we think of war, we think of someone who comes from outside to take away something that is ours. But no. The war that has engulfed and pulverized the former Yugoslavia was born from within, encouraged, nurtured and made from hypertrophic an incredible avalanche of lies, and from the speaking "the belly" that is dangerously increasing fashion. Written with the light hand of a small novel, and having as the core narrative a troubled love story, Rose of Sarajevo writes a accurate, timely and brutal diary of the events of a war waged in the name of ethnicity and religion, both concepts which only serve to apply a pale coat of necessity upon greediness and blind malice.

The Short Drop

Un thriller denso di avvenimenti e di personaggi, teso e complesso senza però essere mai confuso, una storia di potere che, come spesso avviene nelle storie di potere ha le sue radici in avvenimenti orrendi e sanguinosi, senza contare che anche in questa, come in tutte le storie ben costruite, niente è mai come sembra.
Il libro è molto ben scritto, e la trama tiene al 99%, essendo l'1% costituito da alcuni avvenimenti, nella parte finale, la cui sequenza non è ben chiara.
Aggiungo che io amo particolarmente gli scrittori che disseminano i propri libri di indizi che permettano ai lettori, a quelli smaliziati per lo meno, di riconoscere i testi sui quali hanno fatto i loro compiti a casa (Burning Chrome è da tempo nella lista delle mie riletture).


A thriller full of events and characters, tense and complex without ever being confused, a story of power that, as often happens in stories of power, has its roots in horrendous and bloody events, not to mention that in thiese, as in all the well constructed stories, nothing is ever as it seems.
The book is very well written, and the plot keeps 99%, the 1% consisting of some events, at the end of the book, the sequence of which is not well understood.
I must add that I particularly love the writers, who disseminate their books with clues that allow the readers, at least the savvy ones, to recognize the texts on which they have done their homework (Burning Chrome has long been on the list of my re-readings ).

Mrs Hudson and the Malabar Rose

Ultimamente il personaggio di Sherlok Holmes è tornato di gran moda, e non si contano i film più o meno ispirati ai libri originali di Conan Doyle, né gli apocrifi, sia cinematografici che letterari. In questo filone si inserisce questo corposo romanzo per giovani adulti, abbastanza divertente anche per lettori più scafati, nel quale Scherlok Holmes viene nettamente surclassato dalla sua governante, la poderosa Mrs. Hudson, maestra della cucina come del pensiero logico, e decisamente propensa all'uso di metodi non convenzionali per venire a capo dei problemi.

Lately the character of Sherlock Holmes is back in fashion, and it is impossible to count the films more or less inspired by the original books by Conan Doyle, nor the apocryphal, both cinematographic and literary. In this line fits this substantial novel for young adults, funny enough even for more seasoned readers, in which Scherlok Holmes is clearly outclassed by his housekeeper, the mighty Mrs. Hudson, mistress both of the kitchen and the logical thinking, and very prone to the use of unconventional methods to get on top of problems.

Monsieur Le Commandant

Uno dei libri più inquietanti che mi sia mai capitato di leggere, con un protagonista, l'accademico di Francia Paul-Jean Husson, tra i più abietti, falsi, ipocriti, opportunisti, che si possano immaginare.
Scritto sotto forma di lunga missiva da parte di Husson a un comandante della Gestapo, il romanzo ripercorre la storia della colpevole passione del vecchio scrittore nei confronti della nuora, una bellissima ragazza tedesca che ha il torto di essere ebrea. Motore dell'epistola-confessione, è il rendersi conto da parte di Husson che la giovane donna non sarà mai sua, decretandone per questo motivo la condanna a morte.
Come dicevo un libro inquietante, la cui lettura provoca spesso sensazioni di forte pena, ma scritto in modo così potente che non è possibile interrompere fino all'atroce fine.

One of the most disturbing books I have ever read, with a protagonist, the French academic Jean-Paul Husson, the most vile, false, hypocrites, opportunists, you can imagine.
Written as a long letter by Husson to a commander of the Gestapo, the novel tells the story of the guilty passion of the old writer for his daughter-in law, a beautiful German girl who has the fault of being Jewish. Driving force of the epistle-confession, is the realization by Husson that the young woman will never be his, meanwhyle decreeing for her a death sentence.
As I said a disturbing book, the reading of which often results in feelings of strong suffering, but written in a way so powerful that you can not stop until the atrocious end.
Translation into English very well done.
