Una novella scritta con una tecnica simile a quella del flusso di coscienza, nella quale un uomo, di mestiere guardia carceraria, esamina le molteplici ragioni del suo fallimento e nel frattempo parla in modo molto diretto della società americana in generale e della gestione delle carceri in particolare. Il protagonista è un vero perdente, uno di quelli che passano la vita da una parte a dolersi dei propri errori e dall'altra e cercare soggetti su cui scaricare le proprie responsabilità, e per questo, in un qualche modo, si prova simpatia per lui, per quella sua piccolezza che è anche nostra.
Tutto questo va avanti, e anche piuttosto bene, fino ai capitoli finali, quando avviene una modifica sostanziale della personalità del protagonista. Nel corso della storia è abbastanza ovvio che una svolta prima o poi ci sarà, ma la modalità scelta dall'autore è decisamente quella peggiore.

A novel written with a technique similar to that of the stream of consciousness, in which a man, by trade a prison guard, examines the many reasons for hisfailure and meanwhile speaks in a very direct way of American society in general and the management of prisons in particular. The protagonist is a real loser, the kind of man that spends his live on one side lamenting his mistakes, and on the other looking for someone on which to discharge his responsibilities,and therefore, in some way, you feel sympathy for him for the smallness that is also yours.
All this goes on, and also pretty good, until the final chapters, when there is a substantial change in the personality of the protagonist. Throughout history it is quite obvious that a breakthrough sooner or later there will be, but the method chosen by the author is definitely the worst.

Tutti abbiamo sentito parlare del Watergate e di come questo scandalo abbia costretto Nixon alle dimissioni. Irvine ci racconta invece un'altra storia che coinvolge Tricky Dicky, come è stato soprannominato il peggior e più corrotto presidente che gli Stati Uniti abbiamo mai avuto.
La storia, davvero orrenda, viene scoperta per caso da un reduce dal Vietnam, un sopravvissuto ai Cong che, in sella alla sua potente moto nera, si guadagna da vivere facendo il corriere per una testata giornalistica. Le qualità che l'hanno salvato in Vietnam lo faranno sopravvivere ai numerosi tentativi di ucciderlo per chiudergli la bocca sulla verità che ha accidentalmente scoperto.
Abbastanza ben scritto e adrenalinico, il romanzo ha, a parer mio, troppe descrizioni eccessivamente tecniche del comportamento di una moto in corsa, senza contare che i tre proto haker, usati e poi dimenticati dall'autore in un rifugio sicuro, avrebbero potuto essere gestiti meglio per rendere più divertente la storia.


We've all heard of the Watergate scandal and how this has forced Nixon to resign. Irvine instead tells us another story that involves Tricky Dicky, as it has been dubbed the worst and most corrupt president that the United States have ever had.
The story, really horrible, is discovered by chance by a Vietnam veteran, a survivor of Cong, who earn a living as a courier for a newspaper riding his powerful black motorcycl. The qualities that have saved him in Vietnam will make him survive the numerous attempts to kill him to shut his mouth about the truth that has accidentally discovered.
Fairly well written and fast-paced, the novel has, in my opinion, too many overly technical descriptions of the behavior of a motorcycle racing, not to mention that the three proto haker , used and then forgotten by the author in a safe haven, they could be managed best to make the story more fun.

A Calculated Life

A Calculated Life sembra iniziare più o meno da dove finisce Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, vale a dire il celebrato racconto di Dick da cui è stato tratto il celebratissimo Blade Runner.
Ma siamo in Inghilterra invece che in America, e la trama distopica deve molto all'influenza di Huxley e del suo Mondo nuovo.
La storia è molto intimistica, la presa di coscienza di Jayna - che è un simulante, vale a dire un prodotto umano dell'ingegneria genetica - il suo sentirsi sempre più umana, fino al punto di scoprire l'amore e il sesso, avviene senza grossi colpi di scena, se non quello della cattura di Jayna da parte del Costruttore, poco prima che lei riesca a mettere in atto il proprio piano di fuga.
Eppure il libro non finisce lì, e forse, chissà, Jayna riuscirà a recuperare la libertà.
Bel libro, ben scritto, con solo qualche lungaggine di troppo e qualche episodio che forse poteva essere eliminato.

A Calculated Life seems to begin more or less where Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the celebrated story of Dick from which was made by the very celebrated Blade Runner, ends.
But we are in England rather than in America, and the dystopian yield owes much to the influence of Huxley and his Brave New World .
The story is very intimate, the awareness of Jayna - which is a simulant, ie a human product of genetic engineering - her feeling increasingly more human, to the point of discovering love and sex, occurs without big surprises, except that the capture of Jayna by the Construcotr, shortly before she is able to implement her plan of escape.
Yet the book does not end there, and maybe, who knows, Jayna will be able to recover her freedom .
Beautiful book, well written, with just some slowness too, and maybe a few episodes that could be eliminated.

To Die a Dry Death

La vera storia, per quanto romanzata, del naufragio della Batavia, mercantile della Compagnia Olandese delle Indie Orientali, e del terribile destino dei suoi naufraghi, in gran parte torturati e uccisi da un ufficiale impazzito, un autentico tiranno assetato di sangue, convinto di essere lo strumento di un qualche dio allucinato.
L'accurata ricostruzione storica, la finezza della descrizione psicologica dei personaggi e la scrittura tesa e brillante fanno di questo romanzo storico una lettura che avvince dalla prima all'ultima pagina.


The real story, however fictionalized, of the wreck of the Batavia, merchant ship of the Dutch East India Company, and of the terrible fate of most of her castaways, tortured and killed by an officer gone mad, a real bloodthirsty tyrant, convinced to be the instrument of a wild-eyed god.
The accurate historical reconstruction, the fineness of psychological description of the characters and the taut and brilliant writing make this historical novel a compelling reading from first page to last.

Nelle comunità vere la venuta al mondo, la vita intera e la morte non sono eventi privati, ma manifestazioni della comunità stessa. La natura intrinseca di queste società è l'essere matriarcali, perché, a dispetto dell'apparente potere degli uomini, sono le donne la vera guida, le madri che accolgono la vita nascente e hanno dentro di sé la forza e la pietà di terminare una vita ormai finita, eppure sospesa per una dimenticanza della morte.

Un libro potente, molto ben scritto, con una ambientazione insolita - un villaggio di pescatori di aragoste - i cui protagonisti si trovano a fronteggiare un difficile passaggio tra una tradizione quasi tribale e la realtà della globalizzazione. Costellato da figure mitiche e talvolta mistiche, da segreti inconfessabili, e da odi quasi primordiali, questo libro ha tutte le caratteristiche del vero noir, per l'attenta analisi sociologica che contiene e per l'impossibilità dei protagonisti di diventare diversi dalle maschere che si sono cuciti addosso. Solo uno di loro, il Capitano, accettando un amore travagliato, reca nella storia una debole luce di speranza.

A powerful book, very well written, with an unusual setting - a lobstersfishermen's village - which protagonists face a difficult transition from an almost tribal tradition and the realities of globalization. Dotted with mythical and sometimes mystical figures, by unmentionable secrets, and almost primordial hatreds, this book has all the characteristics of a true noir, for the careful sociological analysis that contains, and because of the inability of the characters to become different from the masks that have sewn to themselves. Only one of them, the Captain, accepting a troubled love, brings into the story a faint light of hope.

Blindness

Una storia banale, con una ambientazione banale, e dei personaggi stereotipati al punto da sembrare macchiette. La protagonista poi è talmente insipida e insulsa da far desiderare di non aver mai saputo nulla di lei. Peccato, perché l'inizio faceva ben sperare e l'autrice sa indubbiamente tenere in mano la penna.


A banal story, with a banal setting, and the characters stereotyped as to seem caricatures. The protagonist then is so insipid and silly to wish that I had never heard from her. Too bad, because the beginning was interesting and the author certainly knows how to hold the pen.
