Un'occasione sprecata. L'idea, così come la presenta la quarta di copertina, sarebbe anche buona, ma il libro è talmente mal scritto, pieno di stereotipi e di lungaggini, da essere del tutto insopportabile.
Se l'autore aveva intenzione di portare avanti una denuncia nei confronti delle politiche della Chiesa Cattolica nei confronti dei preti pedofili, ha completamente sbagliato strada.


A wasted opportunity. The idea, as it comes to the back cover, it would also be good, but the book is so poorly written, full of stereotypes and delays, to be completely unbearable.
If the author had intended to pursue a complaint against the Catholic Church policies pertaining the pedophile priests, he has taken completely the wrong way.

Dieci racconti scelti tra l'abbondantissima produzione di Simak. Dieci perle che, nonostante siano legate al passato, riescono a catturare completamente l'attenzione del lettore, sia per la scrittura potente sia per la perfetta definizione dei personaggi, cosa rara nella forma racconto.
A parte il racconto che dà il titolo alla raccolta, che affronta la diversità da un punto di vista prettamente psicologico, si tratta di storie di pura avventura, con un preciso schema western, divertentissime.


Ten stories chosen from the abundant production of Simak. Ten pearls, although they are linked to the past, are able to capture completely the reader's attention, both for the powerful writing andthe perfect definition of the characters, which is rare in the short stories narrative form.
Apart from the story that gives the title to the collection, which addresses diversity from a merely psychological point of view, they are stories of pure adventure with a definite western scheme, hilarious.

Altro esempio di quella che pare avere ormai le dimensioni di una vera e propria corrente letteraria, ovvero i gialli carini ambientati nelle varie università nordamericane, che a quanto pare si fanno concorrenza più a colpi di delitti che di qualità dell'insegnamento. Il defunto è, anche in questo caso, un personaggio insopportabile, del quale si stenta a sentire la mancanza, e che in vita ha fatto più danni che cose buone. Diversamente da altri esempi, questo libro gode di un colpevole degno di questo nome, di un'indagine che, pur fatta in gran parte dal solito dilettante, segue dei criteri migliori del puro caso, e di un gatto, che non partecipa alle indagini, ma offre un inestimabile supporto morale.
Qualche carineria di troppo e un ambiente eccessivamente buonista impediscono di dare il massimo punteggio.




Another example of what seems to have reached the size of a real literary movement, that is the cute thriller that take place in various American universities, which apparently are competing more in crimes that with the quality of teaching. The deceased is, again, an unbearable character, which is hard to miss, and that in life has done more harm than good things. Unlike other examples, this book has a guilty worthy of the name, of a survey which, though made largely from the usual amateur, follows criteria more suitable that the sheer accident, and a cat, which does not participate in the investigation, but it offers an invaluable moral support.
Too many cuteness and a too-good environment to prevent giving the maximum score.

If I Should Remember

Dopo aver traslocato dalla sua città natale in una piccola cittadina della provincia americana, Zoe si ritrova al centro dell'attenzione dei suoi nuovi compagni, un po' perché viene corteggiata dai due più ambiti ragazzi della scuola, un po' per via del suo cane di servizio, con il quale parla di continuo.
Ben presto si delinea una classica situazione di bullismo, alla quale però Zoe risponde con insospettabili capacità di tenere testa a qualsiasi situazione, fino al chiarimento finale.
Carino e ben scritto, appare tuttavia troppo ottimistico riguardo ai rapporti tra adolescenti.


Having moved from her hometown in a small town in the American province, Zoe finds herself at the center of her new companions' attention, a bit because she is courted by the two more yearned guys of the school, a bit because of her dog service, with which she talks constantly.
Soon a classic bullying situation outlines, which, however, Zoe responds with unexpected ability to stand up to any situation, until the final clarification.
Cute and well written, however, seems too optimistic about the relations between adolescents.

The Summer of Secrets

In una magica estate inglese del nostro passato hippy, in un qualche momento dopo l'Isola di Wight, due ragazzine si incontrano. Una proviene da una famiglia artistica e alternativa, dove la madre è bellissima, ma completamente fuori di testa e il padre esiste solo in narrazioni epiche, l'altra invece da una famiglia proletaria apparentemente normale, ma che alberga il mistero di un padre interamente dedito a una barca mai varata e di una madre che un bel giorno se n'è andata.
Da quell'estate, conclusasi con un dramma di cui si sa pochissimo, sono passati vent'anni. Le due ragazzine di allora si rincontrano, cercando di riconciliarsi col passato e con le strategie che hanno dovuto mettere in atto per sopravvivere a quel passato.


In a magical British summer of our hippy past, at some time after the Isle of Wight, two girls meet. One comes from an artistic and unconventional family , where the mother is beautiful, but completely out of your mind and the father exists only in epic narratives, whereas the other comes from a seemingly ordinary working-class family, but that harbour the mystery of a father that is addicted to a boat never launched and a mother that one day simply lefts.
Since that summer, which ended with a drama of which very little is known, twenty years have passed. The two girls then meet again, trying to reconcile with the past and the strategies that they had to put in place to survive the past.

Death in Profile

Qual è il confine tra il giallo classico di stampo vittoriano, alla Agatha Christie per intenderci, e il thriller moderno? Ecco, questo libro è stato scritto proprio per spingere il lettore all'esplorazione di questo confine. Ci sono tutti gli elementi del thriller moderno, dal serial killer al poliziotto a suo modo infedele, così come quelli del giallo classico, compresa la ricerca della verità in situazioni che esulano dal classico ambiente poliziesco e hanno più a che fare con l'ora del tè.
Si tratta quindi di un libro originale, la cui soluzione arriva, nonostante qualche sospetto, quasi del tutto inaspettata, anche se la parte nella quale i protagonisti, per mettere a proprio agio il profiler dilettante da loro incaricato di descrivere la personalità del serial killer, vestono e agiscono come i personaggi di un giallo della Golden Age, è un po' tirata per i capelli.

That is, this book was written precisely to encourage the reader to explore this boundary. Here are all the elements of the modern thriller, from the serial killers to the police officer in his trespass, as well as those of the classic detective fiction, including the search for truth in situations that are beyond the classic detective environment and have more to do with teatime.
So this is a book original, the solution of which comes, despite some suspicion, almost completely unexpected, although the part in which the protagonists, to put at ease the amateur profiler mandated to describe the personality of the serial killer, dress and act like the characters of a golden age of detective fiction, it is a bit fetched.

Ambientato in un mondo governato dall'odio, e dove qualsiasi vita spirituale è vietata per legge, The Charismatics è un fantasy abbastanza fuori dall'ordinario, con una protagonista, Ambrosia, che si evolve nel corso della narrazione da giovane donna spaventata, poco più che un burattino nelle mani di uomini crudeli e potenti e che ha come unico amico una creatura invisibile in grado di cambiare forma, a una politica dalle grandi capacità. Alcuni fili della trama restano sospesi, ma è facile immaginare che saranno ripresi nel seguito della storia.


Set in a world ruled by hatred and where wahtever spiritual life is prohibited by law, The Charismatics is a fantasy quite out of the ordinary, with a protagonist, Ambrosia, which evolves in the course of the narrative from a frightened young woman, just over but a puppet in the hands of cruel and powerful men, and whose only friend is an invisible creature that can change shape, to a political woman of great talent. Some of the threads of the plot are suspended, but it's easy to imagine they are resumed later in the story.

A Death at the University

Ultimamente sembra che vadano di moda questi thriller ambientati nelle università del Nord America, nei quali un professore di chiara fama accademica, ma altrettanto chiara fama di cattivo carattere viene trovato ammazzato, e il dilettante di turno si mostra fondamentale per la soluzione del mistero. Sono thriller vezzosi e ben intenzionati, con personaggi belli ed educati, che di solito fanno lavori fighi e hanno colleghi comprensivi.
Il libro è scritto discretamente e si legge volentieri, soprattutto con l'aiuto di un attacco di insonnia. Il ringraziamento a Maeve Binchy potrebbe spiegare l'eccesso di zucchero.


Lately it seems that these thrillers that take place in North American universities, where a professor of clear academic reputation, but equally well-known for a bad character is found murdered, and the featured amateur detective shows to be crucial to solving the mystery, are fashionable. They are affected and well-meaning thriller, with beautiful and educated people, who usually do cool jobs and have sympathetic colleagues.
The book is discretely written and read well, especially with the help of a bout of insomnia. The thanks to Maeve Binchy could explain the excess of sugar.

Der Barkeeper

Discreto romanzo con un buon protagonista, abbastanza fuori dall'ordinario, e con diversi colpi di scena. Alcune lungaggini e un po' troppa filosofia, per un libro che si vorrebbe d'azione, non permettono di dare una votazione più alta.
Il personaggio di Derek è straordinario.

Ziemlich guter Roman mit einem ungewöhnlichen Protagonist und mit einigen Knalleffekte. Einige Langatmigkeiten und ein bisschen zu viel Philosophie für ein Buch, dass sich um Krimi handeln wollte, eine höhere Bewertung lassesn nicht zu geben.
Der Charakter von Derek ist außergewöhnlich.
