E' molto difficile che io dia il massimo dei voti a una raccolta di racconti, ma questa lo merita in pieno. Innanzi tutto la premessa è uno dei più bei saggi che io abbia mai letto sulla scrittura noir e sul fenomeno drag, e unisce i due fenomeni in modo davvero intelligente e intrigante. Poi ci sono i racconti stessi, scelti con mano davvero felice, tutti divertenti ed eleganti. Una lettura davvero piacevole per chi ama il genere noir declinato in tutte le possibili varianti, dal classico anni '20 fino al fantasy.

It 's very difficult for me to give full marks to a collection of short stories, but this fully deserves it. First of all, the premise is one of the best essays I've ever read upon writing noir and the drag phenomenon, and combines the two phenomena in a really smart and intriguing way. Then there are the stories themselves, chosen with really nimble fingers, all funny and elegant. A reading enjoyable for those who love the noir genre declined in all possible variations, from classic '20s up to fantasy.

The Bone Church

Due cose ho appreso da questo libro: l'esistenza del cosiddetto "Bambino di Praga", immagine sacra che non conoscevo, e del bizzarro ossario di Sedlec. Per il resto che dire? La storia fa acqua da tutte le parti, è noiosa, poco realistica e difficilmente collocabile. Mi spiego: data l'esistenza di un principio di realtà, che è il "mondo" in cui il romanzo si svolge, se questo principio contiene elementi di magia o miracolistica, sarà un fantasy, se non li contiene sarà un romanzo di altra natura. The Bone Church pretende di essere un romanzo storico, ma all'improvviso inserisce elementi magico-miracolistici non previsti, e la cosa mi ha molto disturbato.


Two things I learned from this book: the existence of the "Infant of Prague", sacred image I did not know, and of the bizarre Sedlec Ossuary. For everything else, what can we say? The history is full of holes on all sides, is boring, unrealistic and difficult to plase. Let me explain: given the existence of a reality principle, which is the "world" in which the novel takes place, if this principle contains elements of magic or miraculous, it will be a fantasy, if not, it will a different kind of novel. The Bone Church claims to be a historical novel, but suddenly inserts magical and miraculous elements not provided, and I fount the thing very disturbing.

Diario della progressiva discesa di una famiglia nell'inferno dell'Alzheimer, dalla diagnosi che colpisce il capofamiglia, una specie di burbero patriarca, fino all'esito finale.
Confrontandosi con la malattia ciascuno dei quattro protagonisti ridefinisce il rapporto con gli altri, e soprattutto lo fa Joey, il figlio maschio, che pare indifferente e concentrato solo su se stesso, ma nasconde in sé una profonda pietà.
In realtà il solo Joey vive un'evoluzione nel corso della storia, gli altri personaggi sembrano cercare di adattare la situazione a se stessi piuttosto che viverla appieno, e per questo il libro non riesce a decollare.


Diary of the gradual descent of a family into Alzheimer's hell, from the diagnosis that affects the householder, a kind of gruff patriarch, up to the final outcome.
Confronted with the disease, each of the four protagonists redefines the relationship with the others, and above all does it Joey, the son, who seems indifferent and focused only on himself, but hides a deep piety.
In fact only Joey lives an evolution throughout the plot, the other characters seem to try to adapt the situation to themselves rather to live it fully, and for that the book fails to take off.

Calling

Trovo abbastanza difficoltoso esprimere un giudizio su questo libro. E' scritto bene, la trama accattivante, l'interazione e il parallelismo tra i due protagonisti praticamente perfetto, eppure non mi è possibile dare di più di 3 stelline.
Uno dei due protagonisti è una specie di angelo caduto: pastore protestante per gran parte della sua vita, predicatore di buon livello, porta in sé una specie di peccato originale che è il retaggio di suo padre, a sua volta predicatore, ma dongiovanni e violento. Una volta rotti gli argini, diventerà a sua volta un dongiovanni e un violento, e una buona dose di acido farà il resto.
L'altro è un cattivo ragazzo di terza categoria, anche suo padre è un dongiovanni, pur se non violento, e sua madre è una fanatica religiosa. Di professione DJ radiofonico, passa la sua vita cambiando lavoro e città a causa delle sue cattive abitudini.
Un lungo viaggio in pullman mette i due uomini a confronto, fa sì che raccontino l'uno all'altro la propria vita.
Fin qui tutto bene, ma quando il romanzo avrebbe potuto chiudersi in gloria, arriva un ultimo capitolo, del tutto inutile e privo di logica, che ne riduce clamorosamente il valore.


I find quite difficult to make a judgment on this book. It's well written, has a captivating storyline, the interaction and the parallelism between the two protagonists is almost perfect, yet I can not give more than 3 stars.
One of the two main characters is kind of a fallen angel: Protestant pastor for most of his life, a preacher of good level, possesses a kind of original sin, which is the legacy of his father, in turn preacher, but womanizer and violent. Once broken hisbanks, in turn, become a womanizer and a violent too, and a good dose of acid will do the rest.
The other is a bad guy in the third category, although his father is a womanizer, though not violent, and his mother is a religious fanatic. Radio DJ by profession, spends his spends his life changing work and city because of his bad habits.
A long bus trip puts the two men in comparison, makes that tell each other their lives.
So far so good, but when the novel could have shut in glory, comes a final chapter, totally unnecessary and devoid of logic, which reduces dramatically the value of the story.

Breve saggio storico sull'ordine religioso del momento, quello a cui appartiene Papa Francesco. Scritto con uno stile sobrio, che però non riesce a nascondere il personale orgoglio di chi scrive nei confronti della Società a cui appartiene, esalta i meriti dei Gesuiti e attribuisce gran parte delle ombre gettate sull'ordine all'umana invidia, sete di potere e scarsa comprensione del mondo in generale.
Non sono ovviamente in grado di operare una qualsiasi forma di critica nei confronti di quanto raccontato, mi limito quindi a dire che il libro è ben scritto, interessante fornito di adeguato apparato bibliografico. Senz'altro interessante.


Brief historical essay on the religious order of the moment, that to which belongs Pope Francis. Written in a simple style, that can not hide the personal pride of those who write against his own Company, extols the merits of the Jesuits and attributes much of the shadows cast on the order to the human envy, lust for power and poor understanding of the world in general.
I'm obviously not able to operate any form of criticism about what is told, so I will only say that the book is well-written, interesting, and supplied adequate bibliography. Certainly interesting.
