Forse sembrerà incredibile, ma prima di leggere questo libro Porto Rico per me era solo un nome associato a una vaga indicazione geografica (le Antille). Niente sapevo del suo status di membro del Commonwealth statunitense, nazione alla quale Porto Rico è legata da un rapporto di amore/odio, né del suo complicato mix antropologico.
The house on the Lagoon è la storia di una coppia che si ama odiandosi moltissimo, o si odia amandosi, due persone diversissime che, invece di fondersi mantenendo le proprie diversità, passeranno tutta la vita a cercare di sopraffarsi. Dietro la loro storia c'è quella delle loro famiglie, di origine e allargate, in ciascuna delle quali sono presenti elementi delle svariate rappresentative che compongono la popolazione dell'isola, e che forniscono ai due i variegati aspetti della loro personalità. C'è la storia dell'isola, fin da prima della prima guerra mondiale, in cerca di una propria identità tra indipendenza e avvicinamento agli Stati Uniti. E c'è anche una sotterranea discussione tra i coniugi, che è la perenne diatriba tra la realtà dei fatti e quella del romanzo e quale delle due sia superiore all'altra, e se esista o meno una realtà oggettiva, inalterabile e nello stesso tempo narrabile.
Bel romanzo, molto complesso, nella cui trama si muovono personaggi di grande forza. Come però spesso avviene nella vita sarà proprio colei a cui tutto accade senza che nulla possa far accadere, con la sua fragilità che non è altro che flessibilità, che resterà l'unica superstite capace di diventare la voce narrante della storia.

Perhaps it will seem incredible, but before I read this book, for me Porto Rico was just a name associated with a vague geographical indication (the Antilles). I knew nothing of his status as a member of the American Commonwealth, being the Unites States a nation to which Puerto Rico is linked by a relationship of love / hate, nor of its complicated anthropological mix.
The House on the Lagoon is the story of a couple who loves hating so much, or hate loving; two very different people who, instead of merging maintaining their diversity, will spend a lifetime trying to overpower. Behind their story is that of their families, of origin and extended, in each of which are representative of the various elements that make up the population of the island, and that provide both various aspects of their personality. There is the story of the island, since before the first world war, in search of an identity between independence and rapprochement with the United States. And there is also an underground discussion between spouses, which is the perennial debate between the reality and that of the novel, and which of the two is superior to the other, and whether or not there is a reality objective and unalterable and at the same time narrabile.
Good novel, very complex, in which the characters that move in the plot are of great strengh. But, as often happens in life will be just the one to whom everything happens without anything could make happen, with its fragility that is nothing more than flexibility, which will remain the only survivor capable of becoming the narrator of the story.
