Josephine Sarah Marcus è una bellissima ragazza, una ragazza intelligente, vivace e curiosa, che mal che vive le limitazioni poste da una madre amara e acida, che si è chiusa nel suo ebraismo ortodosso nel tentativo di sfuggire agli orrori che hanno accompagnato la sua fuga dal vecchio mondo, quando a uccidere gli ebrei non erano i nazisti ma i continui pogrom nella cattolicissima Polonia. Ma Josephine è molto ingenua: se ne va da casa per inseguire un'ambigua promessa di matrimonio fattale da un uomo affascinante che l'ha tolta dai guai nel corso di una precedente fuga. Lontana da casa, Josephine scoprirà in fretta che non sono tutti diamanti quelli che gli uomini possono mettere al dito di una ragazzina come lei, e che il meraviglioso mazzo di rose gialle con il quale il fidanzato l'ha accolta viene dritto dritto dalla stanza di una prostituta. Josephine va incontro a una serie di delusioni che però, invece di piegarla, raddrizzano la sua spina dorsale al punto che, quando incontrerà il vero amore, non esiterà a tornare sotto l'amaro tetto di sua madre per attenderlo.
Romanzo ben scritto, con una protagonista molto interessante e fuori dagli schemi, ambientato in un West americano selvaggio, feroce e pieno di possibilità.

Josephine Sarah Marcus is a beautiful, smart girl, lively and curious, that don't stand living with the limitations posed by a bitter and sour mother, which clams up in her Orthodox Judaism in an attempt to escape the horrors that accompanied her escape from the old world, when to kill the Jews were not the Nazis but the constant pogroms in the very catholic Poland. But Josephine is very naive: she leaves home to chase an ambiguous marriage promise made to her by a charming man who has taken her out of trouble during a previous flight. Far from home, Josephine will discover quickly that the ones that men put around the finger of a girl like her are not always diamonds, and that the beautiful bouquet of yellow roses with which the boyfriend has received her comes straight from the room of a prostitute. Josephine undergoes a series of disappointments but instead of bending, she straitens her spine to the point that, when she meet true love, she will not hesitate to come back under the bitter roof of her mother waiting for him.
Well-written novel with a character very interesting and unconventional, set in a rugged American West, fierce and full of possibilities.
