Una storia così può essere ambientata solo nel sud degli Stati Uniti, o in certe lande nostrane in cui imperversa un ottuso mito razziale e del self made man, dell'uomo che non deve chiedere mai, perché si prende tutto da solo, e per le spicce.
Paris Trout è un pazzo sociopatico, e come tutti i suoi congeneri riesce a sembrare del tutto normale, o quasi, fin che sbrocca, e quando lo fa lo fa col botto, letteralmente.
Ma a parte l'evoluzione verso la totale follia di Paris, è interessante notare l'accondiscendenza, per non dire la complicità, della società che gli sta intorno, e non perché non sappiano che è pazzo - la sua condizione viene spesso ribadita durante la narrazione - ma perché fa parte dell'elite del posto.

A story like this can be set only in the south of the United States, or in certain homelands where rages a blunt racial myth, or the one of self-made man, of the man that should never ask, because he takes all by himself, and offhand.
Paris Trout is a crazy sociopath, and how all his congeners manages to look completely normal, or nearly so, since that he goes out of his mind, and when he does it, does it with a bang, literally.
But apart from the evolution towards total folly of Paris, it is interesting to note the acquiescence, if not the complicity, of the society around him, and not because they do not know that he is crazy - his condition is often repeated during the storytelling - but why he is a member of the elite of the place.
