Partendo dalla base della famosissima serie letteraria e televisiva de Il trono di spade, la Larrington imbastisce un interessante saggio nel quale vengono spiegate le radici storiche della saga in termini di miti nordici, leggende medievali, fatti storici realmente accaduti.
Lettura piacevolissima anche per chi, come me, non ha visto la serie televisiva, e si è arenata dopo il primo volume in quanto alla saga.


Starting from the base of the famous literary and television series Game of Thrones, Larrington sketches an interesting essay in which she explains the historical roots of the saga in terms of Nordic myths, medieval legends, actual historical facts.
Pleasant reading even for those who, like me, has not seen the TV series, and ran aground after the first volume of the saga.

Interessante ricerca storica relativa al ben noto "Affare della collana di diamanti", ovvero uno degli elementi scatenanti della Rivoluzione Francese. Come altri saggi prima di questo, scagiona completamente Maria Antonietta, colpevole tuttalpiù di essere inadeguata come Regina di Francia, e punta il dito contro Jean De La Motte, considerata la mente dell'intrigo, e il Cardinale di Rohan, colpevole di immensa stupidità. Niente di nuovo se non per il livello di approfondimento raggiunto nel delineare il carattere dei personaggi e l'accuratezza nella ricostruzione del processo, viziato da enormi pregiudizi e interessi.
Ben scritto e, a tratti, più divertente della media dei saggi sull'argomento.


Interesting historical research about the well-known "Diamonds Necklace's Affair", which is one of the key triggers of the French Revolution. Like other essays before this, it completely exonerates Marie Antoinette, guilty at most of being inadequate as Queen of France, and points the finger at Jean De La Motte, given the mind of intrigue, and the Cardinal de Rohan, who was guilty of immense stupidity. Nothing new except for the level of detail achieved in delineating the nature of the characters and the accuracy in the reconstruction of the process, marred by massive prejudices and interests.
Well written and, at times, more funny than the average of essays on the subject.

Un interessante saggio che tratta di alcune vicende poco conosciute avvenute nel corso, e soprattutto alla fine, della seconda guerra mondiale, vale a dire le attività che hanno alla fine portato alla resa dell'Italia, all'Armistizio e al suo cambiamento di fronte. Vicende per loro natura poco conosciute, in quanto aventi a che fare con attività di intelligence, e testimoniate in documenti secretati fino a pochi anni fa.
Nonostante sia documentatissimo e molto ben scritto, il libro finisce per essere involontariamente comico, soprattutto se letto da un'italiana, perché attraverso questa lettura si apprende che i famosi servizi segreti di Sua Maestà Britannica, e in special modo la branca destinata alla supervisione delle attività sul territorio italiano, si servivano di benintenzionati sprovveduti, del tutto all'oscuro sia del territorio che della lingua, e per questo menati per il naso per anni dai servizi segreti fascisti, capaci di inventare organizzazioni partigiane e atti di sabotaggio del tutto inesistenti, e, addirittura, di farsi foraggiare di soldi ed esplosivi direttamente dai britannici. Senza contare che, tramite agenti doppi, i servizi segreti fascisti riuscirono a mettere le mani su alcuni autentici patrioti che cercavano di mettersi in contatto con gli inglese, uno fra tutti Adriano Olivetti. Pare che insomma il vero lavoro di cambiare l'atteggiamento del popolo italiano, fino a renderlo favorevole a una resa, siano stati piuttosto i pesanti bombardamenti aerei che sfiancarono la popolazione fino al momento della resa vera e propria.
Una lettura interessante e consigliabile a tutti gli appassionati di storia.



An interesting essay on some little-known events that took place during, and especially at the end of the Second World War, namely the activities that eventually led to the surrender of Italy, the Armistice and Italy's change of front. Events by their nature poorly understood, as having to do with intelligence activities, and witnessed in confidential documents until a few years ago.
Although it is well documented and very well written, the book ends up being unintentionally funny, especially when read by an Italian, because reading through this we learn that the famous secret service of His Majesty, and especially the branch intended for the supervision of activities on the Italian territory, used to be well-meaning naive, completely unaware of both the territory and the language, and then teased for years by the fascist secret services, capable of inventing non-existent partisan organizations and acts of sabotage, and, indeed, to be foraging for money and explosives directly by the British. Not to mention that, through double agents, fascist secret services managed to get their hands on some authentic patriots who tried to get in touch with the English, one among all Adriano Olivetti. It seems that in fact the real work of changing the attitude of the Italian people, to make it conducive to surrender, were rather made by the heavy aerial bombardment that extenuated the population up to the time of the surrender itself.
An interesting read and recommended to all lovers of history.

Prima lettura ottobre 2008:
Geologia, antropologia, etnografia, sociologia, politica, arte della guerra, e molto, molto altro ancora sono gli ingredienti di questo magnifico libro, massimo esempio di epica moderna, che racconta la storia con l'afflato del miglior romanzo.
Lawrence, scrittore inestimabile, tiene incollati alla pagina sia che racconti le lunghe notti nel deserto, sia che descriva i protagonisti sia che espliciti i propri pensieri, dolori, dubbi.
Libro altamente raccomandabile per chiunque voglia entrare nel guazzabuglio della moderna storia del popolo arabo.
La nuova traduzione è molto ben fatta, peccato che per la correzione ci si sia un po' troppo affidati al correttore di word.
Seconda lettura:
Ci è voluto più tempo. La prima lettura è corsa sul ritmo epico della narrazione, dell'incredibile guerra che ha generato un personaggio romantico. La seconda invece mi ha fatto apprezzare l'abnegazione di un uomo fisicamente piccolissimo (45 kg) che, nutrito solo dalle sue idee romantiche, portò alla rivolta e alla liberazione un popolo che non era il suo e in cui si era completamente calato.
Alcuni passi sono assolutamente umoristici, e lasciano brillare in pieno l'intelligenza e la cultura di Lawrence, sempre conscio della sua piccolezza e della sua posizione assurda.


First reading October 2008:
Geology, anthropology, ethnography, sociology, politics, art of war, and much, much more are the ingredients of this magnificent book, a true example of modern epic, which tells the story with the inspiration of the best novel. Lawrence, a priceless writer, keeps the reader glued to the page whether he tell the long nights in the desert, or describe the protagonists or make clear his thoughts, doubts, pain.
Highly recommendable book for anyone who wants to get into the mess of the modern history of the Arab people.
The new translation is very well done, too bad that for the correction would be a bit too entrusted to the word checker.
Second reading:
It took more time. The first reading is raced with pace of the narrative, of the incredible war that has generated a romantic character. The second one made me appreciate the dedication of a physically small man (45 kg) who, fed only from his romantic ideas, led the uprising and the liberation of a people that was not his own with whom he identified totally
Some steps are absolutely humorous, and let fully shine the intelligence and culture of Lawrence, always conscious of its smallness and its absurd position.

Un po' romanzo, un po' saggio, un po' autobiografia, un po' libro di appunti e riflessioni.
Attraverso il contatto, privo di pregiudizi e completamente disinvolto, con gli aborigeni australiani Chatwin ripensa allo sviluppo dell'uomo moderno, ne definisce le tappe, ne riconosce l'aggressività e gli archetipi.
Zeppo di spunti per riflettere sulla nostra vita, impossibili da cogliere tutti alla prima lettura, e quindi da riprendere in mano spesso e volentieri, e sarebbe bellissimo che ne esistesse una versione con pagine bianche di tanto in tanto, per aggiungere le proprie scoperte a quelle dell'autore.
