Che cosa fa dell'uomo un uomo? La matematica, la fisica, il parlare, la scrittura, queste sono le prime risposte che vengono in mente a ciascuno di noi. E invece no, dice Zoe Cormier, quello che fa dell'uomo un uomo sono il sesso, la droga e il rock 'n' roll. E questo paradossale assunto dimostra in tre densi capitoli di storia della scienza, scritti con estrema precisione, ma con linguaggio semplice e divertente, che ci guidano attraverso la scoperta di come funziona il nostro cervello in relazione ai tre pilastri di cui sopra. E soprattutto dimostra, nel meraviglioso capitolo finale, come la musica sia l'attività più straordinaria dell'uomo, quella capace di far scattare nel cervello tutti i meccanismi, compresi quelli che hanno a che fare con il sesso e con i neurotrasmettitori del piacere, capace anche di far vibrare all'unisono i neuroni di chi la pratica insieme.

But no, says Zoe Cormier, what makes a man a man are sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. And this paradoxical assumption she proves in three dense chapters of history of science, written with extreme precision, but with simple and entertaining language, that guide us through the discovery of how our brain works in relation to the three pillars mentioned above. And above all she demonstrates, in the wonderful final chapter, that music is the most extraordinary human activity, one capable of triggering all the mechanisms in the brain, including those that have to do with sex and with neurotransmitters of pleasure, also able to vibrate in unison neurons of those who practice together.
In short, make love not war, drop down an acid, but not war, but most of all, play, sing and dance together, and the desire to go to war will pass .

Ancorati come sono alla realtà delle cose, e abituati ad osservarla da vicino senza pregiudizi, i naturalisti sono solitamente ottimi scrittori. McClintock non fa eccezione e offre a noi, che siamo pescatori solo quando il pesce è nel piatto, un'affascinante cronaca della sua attività di pescatore sportivo, scritta con uno stile che non ha nulla da invidiare al meraviglioso Tre uomini in barca. Ovviamente l'attività di pesca fornisce lo spunto per la descrizione delle caratteristiche delle specie ittiche e del loro habitat, dei problemi derivanti dalla variazione dell'ecosistema e delle prospettive nel futuro di un'attività così determinante per l'ambiente e per l'alimentazione.


Anchored as they are to the reality, and used to watch it closely without prejudices, naturalists are usually good writers. McClintock is no exception and offers to us, who are fisherman when the fish is in the pot, a fascinating chronicle of his activities as game fisherman, written in a style that has nothing to envy to the wonderful Three Men in a Boat. Obviously fishing activity provides the opportunity for the description of the characteristics of the fish species and their habitat, the problems arising from the change in the ecosystem and of the future prospects of an activity so important for the environment and human feeding .

Al termine della seconda guerra mondiale l'Europa, e la Germania in particolare, vissero un enorme ripresa economica alla quale però non si affiancò una altrettanto rilevante ripresa sociale. A causa di compromessi di vario genere la mentalità nazifascista non venne completamente eradicata dalla società, e soprattutto dalla mentalità corrente. A farne le spese furono soprattutto le donne, soggette a una sorta di perenne minorità sociale, fisica e psicologica.
In questo clima piuttosto asfittico cominciarono a comparire gruppi di protesta, che in moltissimi casi presero la decisione di prendere le armi contro uno stato che non pareva volersi evolvere.
Tra gli altri emerse la RAF, Rote Armee Fraktion, che assurse agli onori delle cronache in particolare per la sua "inusuale" componente femminile.
Di questa componente, della sua storia e della sua motivazione, di come lo stato e la società reagirono all'idea di donne "violente", e di come queste donne si rapportarono col più pacifico movimento femminista, parla estesamente questo saggio assai ben documentato.
Purtroppo, nonostante l'interesse dell'argomento e la validità della documentazione, la lettura è resa difficile dalla prosa involuta, dalle continue ripetizioni di concetti e dall'oscurità di alcuni passaggi che dovrebbero invece, almeno da quel che si capisce dalle dichiarazioni dell'autrice, essere chiarificanti.

At the end of World War II Europe, and Germany in particular, experienced a huge economic recovery which, however, not joined by an equally significant social reconstruction. Because of various kinds of compromises the Nazi-fascist mentality was not completely eradicated from the society, and especially from the current mentality. For it payd mainly women, prone to a sort of perpetual social, physical and psychological minority.
In this rather feeble climate began to appear protest groups, which in many cases made the decision to take up arms against a state that seemed not to want to evolve.
Among others emerged the RAF, Red Army Faction, that roses to the headlines in particular for its "unusual" female component.
This component, its history and its motivation, how the state and society reacted to the idea of "violent" women, and how these women related themselves with the more peaceful feminist movement, speaks extensively this very well documented essay .
Unfortunately, despite the interest of the subject and the validity of the documents, the reading is made difficult by the convoluted prose, the constant repetition of concepts and the obscurity of some passages that instead should, at least from what we understand from the statements of the author, be clarifying.

Tutto quello che avreste voluto sapere sui denti e non avete mai osato chiedere. Un simpatico libretto sui denti, la loro funzione e la loro evoluzione, a partire dal "tubo primigenio" per arrivare alle scimmie antropomorfe e agli esseri umani. Scritto con un linguaggio semplice e preciso, con pochi ma calzanti aneddoti e disegni esplicativi di buona qualità. Un saggio, ma più divertente di parecchi romanzi.


Everything you ever wanted to know about teeth and never dared to ask. A nice book on the teeth, their function and their evolution, from the "primitive pipe" to the apes and the humans. Written in simple and clear language, with few but apt anecdotes and good quality explicatory drawings. An essay, but more funny than many novels.

Breve saggio storico sull'ordine religioso del momento, quello a cui appartiene Papa Francesco. Scritto con uno stile sobrio, che però non riesce a nascondere il personale orgoglio di chi scrive nei confronti della Società a cui appartiene, esalta i meriti dei Gesuiti e attribuisce gran parte delle ombre gettate sull'ordine all'umana invidia, sete di potere e scarsa comprensione del mondo in generale.
Non sono ovviamente in grado di operare una qualsiasi forma di critica nei confronti di quanto raccontato, mi limito quindi a dire che il libro è ben scritto, interessante fornito di adeguato apparato bibliografico. Senz'altro interessante.


Brief historical essay on the religious order of the moment, that to which belongs Pope Francis. Written in a simple style, that can not hide the personal pride of those who write against his own Company, extols the merits of the Jesuits and attributes much of the shadows cast on the order to the human envy, lust for power and poor understanding of the world in general.
I'm obviously not able to operate any form of criticism about what is told, so I will only say that the book is well-written, interesting, and supplied adequate bibliography. Certainly interesting.

Attraverso l'analisi di un vecchio delitto l'autore racconta dell'introduzione di alcuni moderni metodi di indagine che noi diamo per scontati, come le prove fisiche, l'analisi forense della scena del delitto e del cadavere e l'escussione dei testimoni.
Parla anche di un'epica caccia all'assassino che si conclude nel bel mezzo della corsa all'oro, e del successivo processo.
Molto interessante, ma non così eccitante come l'autore avrebbe voluto; in alcuni tratti diventa addirittura ripetitivo e noioso.


Through the analysis of an old murder the author tells of the introduction of some modern methods of investigation that we take for granted, such as the physical evidence, forensic analysis of the crime scene and the corpse and the examination of witnesses.
He also talks about an epic murder hunt that ends in the middle of the gold rush, and the subsequent process.
Very interesting, but not as exciting as the author would have liked; in some places even becomes repetitive and boring.

Come sanno tutti coloro che mi conoscono, io sono un'appassionata lettrice di narrativa e saggistiche riguardanti il nazismo e l'Olocausto. Si tratta di un periodo storico accompagnato da un atteggiamento morale così incomprensibile per me, da spingermi a leggere ogni singolo pezzo di carta che sia stato scritto al riguardo.
Ciò che, nonostante tutto quello che ho letto, non sono mai riuscita a cogliere fino in fondo, è la motivazione profonda di tutto ciò. Perché va bene l'antisemitismo, vanno bene le motivazioni economiche, vanno bene le rivendicazioni territoriali, ma dietro un progetto di sterminio così completo, articolato, lucido e perfettamente condotto ci vuole qualcosa di più. Così come ci vuole qualcosa di più per trasformare il pacifico vicino in uno spietato aguzzino, e far sì che un intero popolo commetta atti di cui di solito si macchiano solo le frange più estreme e instabili di una popolazione normale. Molte risposte le ho trovate in questo volume, così chiaro e ben documentato, tanti tasselli del puzzle nazismo - popolo tedesco sono finalmente andati al loro posto. Una lettura davvero importante.


As anyone who knows me knows, I am a passionate reader of fiction and nonfiction about Nazism and the Holocaust. It is a historical period accompanied by a moral attitude so incomprehensible to me, to push me to read every single piece of paper that has been written about it.
What, after all what I've read, I've never managed to catch up in the end, is the motive of everything. Because anti-Semitism is good, are good economic reasons, are good territorial claims, but behind a project of extermination so complete, articulate, polished and perfectly conducted it takes something more. Just as it takes something more to transform the peaceful neighbor in a ruthless taskmaster, and to ensure that an entire people commit acts which usually stain only the most extreme and unstable o fa normal population. I found a lot of answers in this book, so clear and well documented, many pieces of the puzzle "Nazism - the German people" are finally went to their place. A reading really important.

Probabilmente cogliendo l'occasione del centesimo anniversario dello scoppio della prima guerra mondiale, viene ripubblicata questa piccola ma densa raccolta di racconti scritti da un personaggio eccezionale come Ellen La Motte. Infermiera e giornalista, la La Motte servì come infermiera negli ospedali da campo, e testimoniò la totale assurdità della guerra e la depravazione morale causata dalla guerra stessa a tutte le persone coinvolte, che fossero soldati, ufficiali, medici o civili. I suoi racconti sono così crudi e impietosi da essere stati a suo tempo banditi perché dannosi per il morale dei belligeranti. Dal punto di vista puramente letterario, a volte la scrittura è un po' ripetitiva, ma le immagini evocate sono talmente forti e inquietanti da rendere scarsamente evidente questo problema di stile.

Probably taking the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, this small but dense collection of stories written by a great character like Ellen La Motte is republished. Nurse and journalist, La Motte served as a nurse in field hospitals, and witnessed the utter absurdity of war and the moral depravity caused by the war itself of all the people involved, whether they were soldiers, officers, doctors or civilians. His stories are so raw and merciless as they were at the time banned because detrimental to the morale of the belligerents. From a purely literary point of view, sometimes the writing is a bit repetitive, but the images evoked are so strong and disturbing to make not very evident this issue of style.

C'è tutto un immaginario relativo alle donne del nazismo, un immaginario che ne fa delle specie di oggetti erotici per feticisti, ma chi erano davvero queste donne?
Il saggio della Lower ne individua alcune, donne normali ben integrate nella società tedesca, diventate a poco a poco mostri, e, generalmente, non punite per i loro crimini in quanto considerate da chi le doveva giudicare meno importanti per il sistema nazismo degli uomini al cui fianco erano. Si tratta di segretarie, infermiere, maestre, ma anche normali donne di casa, mogli di SS o cose simili.
Alla fine niente spiega perché siano diventate così, forse solo una frase, pronunciata da una di loro: non volevamo essere da meno degli uomini.


There's a whole imaginary related to  Nazi women, an imagination that makes them the kind of erotic objects for fetishists, but who really were these women?
The essay of Lower identifies some of them, normal women well integrated in the German society, that gradually become monsters, and generally not punished for their crimes because they were considered by those who had to judge less important of the men whose side were in the Nazi system. They were secretaries, nurses, teachers, but also ordinary housewives, wives of SS or something.
In the end nothing explains why they  so, perhaps just a phrase, uttered by one of them: we did not want to be outdone by the men.

Autobiografia della Nafisi, famosa per Leggere Lolita a Teheran, in realtà narrazione biografica di una famiglia e un'epoca, viziata dai controversi rapporti tra il padre e la madre.
Avrebbe potuto essere molto interessante dato il momento in cui si svolge la parte centrale - vale a dire la rivoluzione islamica - date le persone coinvolte - il padre fu sindaco di Teheran e la madre una delle prime donne parlamentari sotto lo Shah - invece è spesso confusa, piena di fatti ininfluenti e disarticolati, che non permettono di capire che cosa abbia realmente influenzato la crescita politica e intellettuale dell'autrice.


Autobiography of Nafisi, famous for Reading Lolita in Tehran, actually the biographical narrative of a family and an era marred by the controversial relationship between the father and the mother.
It could have been very interesting since the time when there is the central part - ie the Islamic Revolution - and the people involved - her father was mayor of Tehran and the mother one of the first parliamentarians women  under the Shah - instead it is often confused, full of facts irrelevant and disjointed, which does not allow you to understand what has really influenced the author's intellectual and political growth.

Credo di aver goduto poche volte nella mia vita come durante la lettura di Considera l'aragosta, e mai leggendo una raccolta di saggi.
David Foster Wallace è intelligente, brillante, divertente, acuto, gigione, abilissimo in quel gioco delle tre carte che è una scrittura che incolla il lettore alla pagina.
Nonostante i saggi che compongono la raccolta siano un po' datati, le conclusioni che trae e la sua capacità di tenere il lettore per mano anche quando lo spedisce su quelle piste di caccia che sono le note li rendono attuali ed esemplari.
Senza contare che, in quella perla che è Autorità e uso della lingua, ho finalmente trovato una definizione che calza a pennello a me e a quelli come me diversa da "cacacazzo" o "bastardo paranoico" :-D


I think that few times in my life I enjoyed myself as when reading Consider the Lobster, and never reading a collection of essays.
David Foster Wallace is intelligent, brilliant, funny, sharp, ham, very skilled at that shell game that is a writing that glue the reader to the page.
Even though the essays in the collection are a bit dated, the conclusions he draws and his ability to hold the reader by the hand even when he send him on those hunting trails that are the notes, make them current and exemplary.
Not to mention that, at that pearl that is Authority and use of the language, I finally found a definition that fits perfectly to me and those like me different from 'pain in the ass' or 'bastard paranoid' :-D

The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements

5 stelle e non bastano per un libro che è una vera delizia. Una delizia per chi, come me, è un chimico, ma anche per chi di chimica ha sempre detto di non capire nulla, fino ad averne repulsione.
In ottimo e chiaro inglese (e spero che la traduzione italiana sia all'altezza e non metta ampollosità e confusione in ciò che è chiaro e divertente) racconta la storia della scoperta dei vari elementi chimici, mettendo insieme un'opera che è scientifica, politica, storica, gossippara il giusto, e avvincente come un libro di Stephen King.
E che ha anche il merito di aver chiarito una volta per tutte a un chimico scarsamente portato per la fisica (io) il principio di indeterminazione di Heisenberg, strappandomi una bella risata per la semplice e incontrovertibile eleganza della spiegazione.


5 stars aren't enough for a book that is a real delight. A delight for those who, like me, are chemists, but also for those who of chemistry have always said they doesn't understand anything, up to repulsion.
In excellent plain English (and I hope that the Italian translation keep up and not put bombast and confusion in what is clear and fun) it tells the story of the discovery of the various chemical elements, putting together a work that is scientific, political, historical, gossipy the needed, and compelling as a book by Stephen King.
And it also has the merit of having cleared up once and for all to a chemist poorly led for physics (me) the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, snatching a good laugh for the simple and indisputable elegance of explanation.

I diavoli di Loudun

Opera monumentale, tra il romanzo e il saggio, che attraverso la vera storia di un caso di possessione diabolica in un piccolo centro della Francia di Richelieu, ricostruisce l'orrore della caccia alle streghe e nello stesso tempo traccia le linee della possessione moderna, l'alienazione mentale causata dalla dittatura.
Il libro alterna capitoli di precisa ricostruzione storica, leggermente romanzata per renderla più gradita al lettore, e capitoli di analisi etica, spiritualista e filosofica nei quali l'autore dispiega una immensa erudizione che comprende anche le teologie orientali meno conosciute.
Non facile, ma caldamente raccomandabile.

"La tribù della tigre" viene considerato un testo fondamentale da parte di chi studia l'etologia felina, e in effetti lo è, anche se, dal punto di vista della mia più che ventennale convivenza con una comunità di gatti non indifferente (oggi sono 16, ma sono stati anche di più), trovo non condivisibili alcune osservazioni
