Todesstille über Föhr

Cornelia Härtl

My rating: 4/5

Kari Lürsen is a former BKA officer – the German Federal Criminal Police Office – who now trains special investigative teams to combat crime. This does not mean that her life is any quieter now; in fact, she finds herself investigating a strange case on the small island of Föhr, an 82-square-kilometre speck of land in the North Sea, where she had planned to spend the days leading up to New Year’s Eve with her boyfriend, who runs a local pub.
Instead, a woman is found murdered in a holiday flat. Her identity is unknown because both her documents and the banknotes she used to pay some of her expenses turn out to be forged. Shortly afterwards, another body is discovered, this time that of a man who appears to have committed suicide by hanging himself from the shutter of a closed bar.
The two cases might not even be connected, were it not for the fact that the man is carrying a scarf that is clearly part of a set which also includes the hat and gloves found in the woman’s flat. It is an unusual set, moreover, as all three items are handmade and of the very highest quality.
To complicate matters further, Kari’s current boss and her former boss at the BKA intervene. Whilst entrusting her with the investigation, they assign Sebastian – one of her trainees, with whom she has had a difficult working relationship in the past – to assist her. As if that were not enough, they clearly withhold information that they possess and order the pair to remain completely silent about the investigation.
The story that unfolds leads the two detectives – who gradually overcome their mutual mistrust – to delve into the pasts of the two victims, until they uncover a criminal racket that preys on lonely women longing for affection. The racket is led by a man who has no scruples and is particularly dangerous because he is part of the system.
All in all, a fine novel that, despite being the fifth in the series, can be read without too much concern for the previous instalments, and that pays particular attention to the characters’ emotions and psychological depth.

I Know What You Did

Cayce Osborne

My rating:  2/5

Petta Woznewski is a middle-aged woman, bitter and in constant conflict with life. She lives in New York, has a job that provides her with a decent living but offers little intellectual stimulation, has a part-time boyfriend to whom she gives plenty of sex but little affection, so as not to get too close, and tries not to think about her past.
Until one day – at the gynaecologist’s, of all places – she discovers that a thriller has recently been published, which has quickly become a bestseller, and whose protagonist has a name almost identical to her own: Petal Woznewski. The problem is that Petta’s real name is actually Petal, and the story described in the thriller – in which she is undoubtedly the murderer – is that of her own past.
The author of the novel writes under a pseudonym, but seems to know the facts very, very well, to the point that Petal can only think of one person who could have written it: Jenny, the third member of the teenage friendship that bound Petal, Jenny and Megan together – a friendship that ended with Megan’s death.
Determined to get to the bottom of things and establish the truth – that Megan’s death was a tragic accident – Petal returns to her hometown of Madison, where lies, ghosts from the past, sheer madness and, finally, the decision to shed the armour she has built around herself await her, so that she can finally have a better life.
The novel is rather weak and easily predictable, with the causal links feeling rather far-fetched and the ending decidedly conventional. The final section, moreover, is, in my view, superfluous, because what will become of Petal’s life after this adventure is clear from the moment she decides that saving Gus is her priority.
Pages and pages of good intentions that are obvious from the outset, in other words.
The best part – the one that partly saves the novel – is the excerpts from the supposed bestseller that set the story in motion; these are decidedly well written.

The Graffiti Killer

David Milnes

My rating 2/5

The protagonist of this novel is a little man. He is best defined by what he is not – by what he has failed to achieve – rather than by what he is. He is not even an albino, although he might appear to be at first glance. Nevertheless, thanks to a degree of financial stability achieved more by chance than by merit, he, like many Britons, moves to Spain to spend his twilight years.
For company, he turns to an online dating site, which sets him up with a woman he soon begins to detest. She describes herself as an artist, but in his view – he prides himself on having a deeply artistic sensibility – what she paints is nothing but kitsch rubbish. It is probably the fact that she somehow achieves a modicum of fame, which distances her from him and prompts her to tell him to his face what she really thinks, that drives our little man down the path of murder.
In the name of true art – that is, purely academic art – he begins by killing his ex-partner and goes on to kill a group of graffiti artists he encounters whilst travelling the roads of Spain. Then, perhaps emboldened by his success, he sets out to hunt down those he calls ‘trasheteers’, that is, devotees of popular culture in its various forms.
Despite his careful planning, all his attempts come to nothing, leaving him increasingly angry and destitute, to the point of having to live precariously, like many other Britons who, having gone to Spain, have bitten off more than they can chew, in an airport. And it is there that, to overcome the despondency of not being recognised as the saviour of genuine art, he decides to write his story.
That said, in my view, the novel has some fairly significant problems. First of all, the various parts seem rather disjointed. The man who kills his partner doesn’t seem to be the same person who kills the graffiti artists, nor the one who fails miserably at all his other objectives. Through sheer bad luck, or, rather, thanks to the victims’ sheer good fortune, his plans repeatedly come to nothing. It seems the author has forgotten here that too many coincidences can wear the reader down.
Then there’s the ending, which lends the story an almost dreamlike quality: are we dealing with a ruthless, albeit unlucky, killer, or someone who, fed up with witnessing such mayhem, dreams of annihilating those responsible?

One final issue: the title. It’s true that, in the end, it’s only the poor graffiti artists who lose their lives, but singling them out is reductive and misleading.

One of My Patients is a Vampire

Abigail Moyer

My rating: 5/5

Ian Greyson is a psychiatrist. Once renowned for his uncanny ability to understand the minds of the most depraved serial killers, following the terrible accident in which he lost his beloved partner, he retired to Hershey, Pennsylvania, a model town founded by the candy tycoon Milton S. Hershey. Hershey is one of the world’s largest chocolate manufacturers, and Ian Greyson has practically developed an addiction to their products, which seem to be the only thing capable of soothing his pain – a terrible psychological pain that often turns into unbearable physical suffering.
In Hershey, Ian has resumed his work as a psychiatrist, albeit on a local scale, with eccentric patients such as the old lady who hates her children and shows her displeasure towards the psychiatrist by hurling her dentures at him, or the young bisexual man in love with his cat.
Then three baffling things happen: whilst at the shopping centre to buy the cleaning products he needs to tidy up his office after a particularly heated encounter with the denture-spitting old lady, Ian is approached by a strange little boy who tells him that one of his patients is a vampire; another psychiatrist, an old acquaintance of Ian’s, is found dead – and not simply dead, but completely drained of blood; and Alexandra Abrams turns up at his practice.
From this point onwards, the novel, which had started off almost humorously, takes a decidedly Gothic turn. Alexandra is an almost mythological figure: a woman who has been found not guilty of her daughter’s murder but whom the public regards not only as guilty but as a monster because of her experiments in neurosurgery.
The chemistry between Ian and Alexandra is immediately apparent, so strong that it transcends the boundaries between therapist and patient, with a degree of intimacy and familiarity that takes Ian back to the days he shared with his late partner. Meanwhile, however, other unexplained deaths occur; the police investigate, accusing Alexandra of being a vampire, and strange documents emerge that point to Ian’s past.
A genuinely difficult novel to classify: fantasy, thriller, horror, Gothic fiction, science fiction? I would say, above all, a novel about love and time. About a love that does not diminish over time and is capable of recognising itself even in the most extreme and unusual circumstances. A superbly written novel, with a rare ability to delve deeply into the characters, credible despite its utter implausibility, and, above all, very hard to put down.

My rating: 3/5

If this Nordic thriller by a German author could be summed up in a single phrase, it would be "the novel of the unresolved detectives".
Virtually none of the members of the team tasked with investigating the tragic murder of Gen Solberg, a successful entrepreneur in the Arctic tourism sector, seem to have come to terms with their own inner conflicts, and this casts a long shadow over an investigation that appears highly complicated from the outset.
First of all, there are no witnesses, no clues and, at first glance, no apparent motive – unless Solberg’s innovative business model has upset long-established interests.
Perhaps. Yet, despite fears that a murder might damage the local tourist industry, the Northern Lights have become such a global attraction that the streets of Tromsø, well beyond the Arctic Circle, seem filled almost exclusively with visitors from every corner of the world.
Or does the motive lie in the entrepreneur’s past life – having come from elsewhere and, until very recently, been involved in something completely different?
Or perhaps in his turbulent love life?
So, whilst the detectives are feeling their way in the dark, in a sense haunted by their own ghosts and caught up in the strange routines with which they try to keep their lives together, another murder takes place – different in nature from the first but which immediately appears to be connected.
Will Anta Thorsen and Hans Vigeland manage to find enough clarity to solve the case?
A novel with great potential but one that attempts to juggle too many narrative strands, featuring lengthy digressions into the tormented minds of the protagonists and even the minor characters, which gradually smother the reader’s engagement, much like the ceaseless snow falling over the Norwegian town.

Zero Knowledge

Arnaud Pascolo

My rating: 4/5

Set in Zug, in the heart of Switzerland’s Crypto Valley, Zero Knowledge is a thriller that truly manages to baffle the reader. An entrepreneur leaves home convinced he is going to meet someone who will help him resolve his financial problems, but he dies suddenly. What initially appears to be an accidental death turns out to be a sophisticated murder.
There is a series of numbered envelopes, supposedly containing clues to guide the investigators, which instead lead them towards a number of ‘useful idiots’ whose only fault is their reprehensible morals. There are a father and a daughter: he is a detective nearing retirement, while she is a young investigator eager to prove herself worthy of her father’s reputation. There is a recent widow trying to recover from her husband’s sudden death and beginning to breathe a sigh of relief, as their marriage was not exactly a bed of roses. There is a member of the Chinese underworld who was swindled by the deceased businessman. There is Duan Ripa, an inconsolable widower, cyber-security expert and friend of the deceased, who is conducting his own parallel investigation. And then there’s her: Duan Ripa’s late wife, the real genius behind her husband’s cyber-security firm.
In short, a veritable set of Chinese boxes that keeps the reader constantly one step behind, eager to come up with new theories about how the story will end. Spoiler: whatever comes to mind whilst you’re reading, it’s the wrong one.
An excellent read, packed with adrenaline and insights into the mysterious world of cryptocurrency. A few too many tightrope walks mean that, at times, the suspension of disbelief takes a bit of a tumble.

The Eye of the Leopard

Henning Mankell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Magnifico.

An 'off-standard' Mankell in the sense of outside the well-known Commissioner Wallander's series, but out of the ordinary also for the beauty and depth of the novel, which interlaces the events that took place during the childhood of the protagonist, son of a man fighting his Demons (the renunciation to the sea, the estrangement of his wife) through a scientific drunkenness, with his being, as grown up, stranded in Africa in pursuit of someone else's desire and the attempt to calm a sense of macroscopic guilt.
He'll need 20 years of work, malaria, to testify to of unprecedented violence, and, above all, having to commit two murders to realize that despite everything Africa has not made him a better man and he has to return to the land to which he belongs and to wish for himself something of his own.
Magnificent.

Bretherton: Khaki or Field Grey?

Bretherton: Khaki or Field Grey?W.F. Morris
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The First World War is over. The time for ceasing the fire has already been fixed and an English and a German battalion are battling the last battle, plus for the morale then pledge, a small castle. The Germans retreat and an officer, Baron, enters the castle attracted by the notes of a piano playing some typical British military marches. The officer runs through the corridors until he arrives at a salon where he presents himself in front of a surreal scene: a beautiful woman who wears an evening dress, dead without any apparent injury, and a German general, also dead, with a bayonet wound in his chest and his head reclined on the piano. Baron shakes the head of the man and what he sees fills hhum with horror, for the dead man is his dear friend, in turn British officer Gerard Bretherton, who everyone call G.B.
From this premise begins the narration of a strange story, written first from the point of view of Baron and then of G.B., which is both faithful account of the horrors of the First World War written by a man who lived it in the first person and a keen psychological thriller that blends spy-story with a mystery that seems to have been taken by Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
The rude and somewhat unusual language at first makes reading difficult, but once you become accustomed it becomes one of the plus of the novel.
I thank Casemate Publishers for giving me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Grey Shepherds

The Grey ShepherdsAngus MacVicar
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Gray Shepherds are Druidic era monoliths similar to Stonehenge and for three thousand years stand on the heights in the neighbourhood of the Badorno castle in Scotland. But a bad day one of these monoliths falls and, in his fall, it crushes a young woman. Death is, in a rather hasty, classified as an accident, but some details don't convince MacDonald, a journalist born around here that now lives in London and, not surprisingly, dubbed 'Fighting Mac'. With the help of an old school friend, now incorruptible cop, and a pair of expert television reporters that at first thought to simply let him do the dirty work in an journalistic investigation that somehow involves the government, will find the classic nest of vipers.
The character of Mac Donald is very apt, and I am grateful to the author for having spared at the last moment the happy ending, but unfortunately at some point he lost sight of the solidity of the plot and was at the very end, had to settle for flaunting a communist plot as a reason for a series of events increasingly dangerous and agitated.
Despite this, the book is well written and reads nicely.

Bay Of Martyrs

Bay Of Martyrs Tony Black & Matt Neal

My rating : 4/5

The ingredients of this story are all very well known and used in genre fiction: the ex-idealistic journalist, whose ideals were, with the passage of time, replaced by a mix of drugs, alcohol and cynicism, a beautiful woman who, to escape from her past, literally ends 7,000 miles away, an officer of goodwill, one rather corrupt, dirty business, and of course, murders. On the other hand it is with proven ingredients that you cook good dishes, as taught by the tradition of Italian cooking, a tradition that apparently the two authors have learned very well and infused into their novel. Nothing in this novel is uncared for or left to chance, the characters are appropriately detailed, never excessive even when it comes to a drugged out of his mind that decides to take out everyone, and that's because the authors never forget the human side.
Very well written, a very enjoyable reading.
Thank Freight Books and Netgalley for giving me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Missing Witness

The Missing Witness Jo Smedleys

My rating: 3 of 5 star

A young woman is killed with a knife in the back in her kitchen, and of course the prime suspect is the husband, all the more so because after the divorce the man, a real wuss, was reduced to living like a bum in the loft of the wife's house, of course in secret from her. But this does not convince Irene, a still very active and alert retired, which co-opts her friend Ruth, a young mother who quit her job to devote herself to her child and that is cultivating a monumental boredom, in performing a series of investigations as amateurish and outlandish as effective. The book is funny and very well written, but it has some not insignificant defect: first, Ruth, with her continuous pendulate between 'I'm bored to death, I miss my job' and 'I want to see my baby grow' sometimes it seems in need of a couple of well-aimed slaps; then there are too many mothers into the plot, mothers who are the mover, not so unmoved, of everything, except that with today's low birth rate to have around so much mothers seems implausible. Last but not least: too many gender bias and too many clichés.
Thank Endeavor Press and Netgalley for giving me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

LaCour's Destiny

LaCour's Destiny Robert Downs
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

LaCour is the surname of a young woman employed as an accountant in an unnamed company that deals with new technologies, and her destinye was unknown to me at the beginning of the novel and continued to be unknown to the end of the same, because her life, her habits, her idiosyncrasies and her adventures in search of a mellow colleague that suddenly disappears are without rhyme or reason.
Two stars because although the book should lose three-quarters of its consistency to eliminate unnecessary parts, is not misspelled.

Hic sunt leones

Hic sunt leones Hic sunt leones by Anton Francesco Milicia
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Memory of Flames

Memory of Flames Armand Cabasson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Lettura davvero consigliabile.

After failing to defeat Russia, Napoleon is now in the descending phase of his parable, with the European monarchies which are allied and now are after him. Huge armies are on the march towards Paris, and the greatly reduced emperor's army is for them a little more than a mosquito bite. In Paris remained Joseph, brother of Napoleon, fearful and paranoid, that does not share his brother's genius. On the eve of what is now an inevitable catastrophe, it was found the lifeless body of the general in charge of studying the defense of Paris. The man has not only been killed, but his face was disfigured by the flames, and next to him was left the symbol of one of the many royalist groups that would like to restore the Bourbons on the throne. There is only one smart enough man to carry out the investigation by infiltrating between the royalists, and he is Lieutenant Colonel Quentin Margont, which will then begin a cat and mouse game becoming both the hunter inside group that hide the murderer and their prey. Very dangerous game for his personal safety, and desperate, because the Allies are approaching every day the capital.
Very interesting historical reconstruction of the Parisian atmosphere on the eve of the fall of Napoleon, very articulate thriller plot and depth and realistic characters. Really recommend reading.

Il sindacato dei poliziotti yiddish

Il sindacato dei poliziotti yiddish Michael Chabon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Even Dogs in the Wild

Even Dogs in the WildIan Rankin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A unfortunate day Ian Rankin decided to send his Inspector Rebus in retirement, and make room for a new detective. After reading the first book of the new series, I decided that it was not worth it and I do not read others. One of the five stars that I gave is therefore a sign of praise for the decision to Rankin to return on his steps and give back to us readers the joy of having to do with his grumpy Rebus.
Two stories intertwine in this novel, both from the past. One is the 'same' story: the criminals with whom Rebus has always had to do have grown old with him, but none have become model citizens, and somehow continue to make war, perhaps even in the form of ambushes by a sniper. But many things do not add up: what unites an old criminal with a lawyer seemingly above reproach and with an assistant in a shelter for minors became a millionaire with a lottery win? And why someone killed the son of a boss in the mood used by the sniper? Something else is moving, something that comes from an even more horrible past of the old crime of Edinburgh and, while his younger colleagues unravel criminal skein, only the acumen and the stubbornness of Rebus can get on top of the other story, the sordid one.
A Rankin at his best, nothing to say, and the song that gives title to the novel is really disturbing.

Twillyweed

TwillyweedMary Anne Kelly
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Pubblicato 15 settembre 2015 da Open Road Integrated Media

E tutti vissero felici e contenti.

And they lived happily ever after. Twillyweed, named after the ancestral home of an American family of Irish descent, is one of those cute mistery in which the usual middle-aged but still attractive woman founds herself to solve the mystery after understanding everything just the opposite. So the rich family who hired her niece is actually a band of poor devils, living prety much of the charity and the guilt of those who, in an accident, disabled the older brother; what she thought to be a repairer of boats is a rich heiress; the fascinating man-eater is a lesbian, but, above all, who is absent is not necessarily gone away.
Only the yunger of tje house, a four year old child with a battered eye, sees things clearly, and only when he decides to take action, forcing the others to follow him to save him, things will be finally in place.
The novel is quite well written and the characters are interesting. Too many clichés and too many digressions for my taste.

La strada delle ombre

La strada delle ombre Mikel Santiago
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Titolo originale Ceux qui vont mourir te saluent - 1994
