Due storie intrecciate, quella di Mira e quella della cugina Rosha, la prima che cresce in America, la seconda rimasta, con la sua famiglia nell'Europa inghiottita dal nazismo.
L'idea è decisamente buona, ma il romanzo lascia lo stesso un po' troppo a desiderare, sbilanciato com'è verso la parte "americana".
E' chiaro che è molto più facile descrivere la vita agiata di Mira, nonostante il padre sia abbastanza dispotico e la famiglia allargata piuttosto invadente, piuttosto che quella di Rosha, che si salva solo perché una vicina cristiana accetta di prenderla in custodia e nasconderla mentre i suoi genitori vengono portati alla morte, ma lo stesso l'autrice si sarebbe dovuta impegnare in un maggior approfondimento di questa parte.


Two intertwined stories, the one of Mira and the one of her cousin Rosha, the first growing up in America, the second remained with her family in the Eastern Europe swallowed up by the Nazis.
The idea is very good, but the novel leaves anyway a bit too much tobe desired as it is biased towards the "American" side.
It is clear that it is much easier to describe the comfortable life of Mira, despite her pretty despotic father and her rather intrusive extended family, rather than that of Rosha, who is only saved because a Christian neighbour agrees to take her into custody and hide her while her parents are brought to death, but anyway the same should have engaged herself in a deeper analysis of this part.

Time Heals No Wounds

Hannes, un giovane poliziotto, un po' broccolo per la verità, e che fino a quel momento è stato un poliziotto per scusa visto che faceva parte del reparto atleti, viene avvicinato al lavoro "vero" visto che la sua carriera come sportivo è prossima alla fine, e viene affiancato a un vecchio poliziotto furbo come una volpe. Naturalmente comincia a succedere di tutto: una donna viene trovata annegata - il suo primo cadavere, sul quale vomita - e quasi subito si capisce che non si tratta di incidente o suicidio, ma omicidio, durante le indagini Hannes viene in contatto con una industria farmaceutica dal passato poco pulito, con attivisti anti-Nazi, la scomparsa di una ragazza che apparentemente non ha nulla a che vedere con tutti gli altri e con un vecchio pittore muto e un po' fuori di testa che un mercante d'arte un po' truffatore ha trasformato in un fenomeno mondiale. E così via indagando in giovane Hannes si dimostrerà non così broccolo, e scoprirà un gigantesco bluff, figlio della colpa e della vendetta.
Libro divertente, abbastanza ben scritto, anche se alcuni eventi sono un po' tirati per i capelli.


Hannes, a young policeman, a bit dumb to tell the truth, and who until that time was a police officer by chance since he was part of the athletes' department, is approached to the 'real' job as his career as a sportsman is close to the end, and is joined to a old policeman crafty like a fox. Of course everything begins to happen: a woman is found drowned - his first corpse, on which he vomits - and almost immediately one understand that this is not an accident or suicide, but murder; during the investigation Hannes comes into contact with a pharmaceutical industry with a unclean past, with anti-Nazi activists, with the disappearance of a girl who seemingly has nothing to do with everyone else and with an old painter dumb and a little out of his head that a a little con art dealer has turned into a worldwide phenomenon. And so on investigating young Hannes he will prove to be not so dumb, and discovers a gigantic bluff, son of guilt and revenge.
Funny book, well written enough, although some events are a bit stretched.

Tutta la luce che non vediamo

Da una parte una bambina cieca, dall'altra un orfanello dai capelli candidi. Lei ha come dono una incredibile curiosità e una altrettanto incredibile forza di carattere, lui una sorellina che, pur essendo più piccola, vede assai bene oltre le apparenze, e un innato talento nei confronti della tecnologia.
Le loro vicende si snodano sullo sfondo della salita al potere di Hitler e della sua inumana macchina di guerra e sterminio. E, come in qualsiasi libro di avventure ben congegnato, della trama fanno parte il Nautilus e una gemma preziosissima, misteriosa e maledetta.
Anche se non si conoscono, i due bambini, ormai diventati ragazzi, sono uniti da qualcosa che riguarda il passato e che permetterà loro di andare oltre ciò che il destino sembra aver preparato per loro, vale a dire il ruolo di vittima e aggressore.
Fortunatamente l'autore, nonostante ce l'abbia fatta temere, ci ha evitato una conclusione troppo banale.
Ottimo impianto storico e scrittura interessante.

Ce l'hanno sempre raccontata così: il cattivissimo Hitler un bel giorno ha deciso di attaccare l'Unione Sovietica e, immemore dell'esempio di Napoleone, si è impantanato nelle immense distese russe, dove ha mandato i suoi uomini a morire di fame e freddo sotto i bastioni di Leningrado. Ecco, sì, ma anche no. Nonostante la sua innegabile follia Hitler non era molto diverso da qualsiasi capo di stato del suo tempo, un tempo in cui la politica internazionale era fatta soprattutto di machismo adolescenziale, e usare un linguaggio apocalittico contro gli avversari politici o territoriali era la norma, e nel quale parlare di spazio vitale a spese dei vicini di casa era a sua volta la norma.
E poi, chi ci ha raccontato questa versione degli eventi? Verrebbe da rispondere "la moglie di Cesare", quella sulla quale non ci sarebbero dovuti essere sospetti...
Ottimo saggio storico, documentatissimo e molto acuto, e, soprattutto, scritto benissimo.

They have always told it as well: one day the very bad Hitler decided to attack the Soviet Union and, unmindful of the example of Napoleon, get stuck in the immense Russian expanses, where he sent his men to die of hunger and cold under the Leningrad bastions. Well, yes, but maybe not. Despite its undeniable madness Hitler was not much different from any leader of his time, a time when the international policy was especially made of adolescence machismo, and the use of apocalyptic language against political or territorial opponents was the norm, and in which speaking of living space to the neighbors expenses was itself the norm.
Besides, who told us about this version of events? One might say 'Caesar's wife', one on which there should not have been suspicious ...
Great historical essay, well documented and very acute, and, above all, very well written.

Monsieur Le Commandant

Uno dei libri più inquietanti che mi sia mai capitato di leggere, con un protagonista, l'accademico di Francia Paul-Jean Husson, tra i più abietti, falsi, ipocriti, opportunisti, che si possano immaginare.
Scritto sotto forma di lunga missiva da parte di Husson a un comandante della Gestapo, il romanzo ripercorre la storia della colpevole passione del vecchio scrittore nei confronti della nuora, una bellissima ragazza tedesca che ha il torto di essere ebrea. Motore dell'epistola-confessione, è il rendersi conto da parte di Husson che la giovane donna non sarà mai sua, decretandone per questo motivo la condanna a morte.
Come dicevo un libro inquietante, la cui lettura provoca spesso sensazioni di forte pena, ma scritto in modo così potente che non è possibile interrompere fino all'atroce fine.
Traduzione in inglese molto ben fatta.



One of the most disturbing books I have ever read, with a protagonist, the French academic Jean-Paul Husson, the most vile, false, hypocrites, opportunists, you can imagine.
Written as a long letter by Husson to a commander of the Gestapo, the novel tells the story of the guilty passion of the old writer for his daughter-in law, a beautiful German girl who has the fault of being Jewish. Driving force of the epistle-confession, is the realization by Husson that the young woman will never be his, meanwhyle decreeing for her a death sentence.
As I said a disturbing book, the reading of which often results in feelings of strong suffering, but written in a way so powerful that you can not stop until the atrocious end.
Translation into English very well done.

The Sleeper

Sono un'avida lettrice di tutto ciò che è stato scritto in merito ai tragici eventi della seconda guerra mondiale e al nazismo. Mi duole quindi dover dire che ho trovato questo romanzo inferiore a qualsiasi mia aspettativa, con una trama confusa, un eccesso di personaggi e una scrittura particolarmente noiosa.
Peccato, perché l'idea di fondo era assai buona.



I am an avid reader of everything that was written about the tragic events of World War II and Nazism. So I regret to say that I found this novel lower than any of my expectations, with a confusing plot, too many characters and an especially tedious writing .
Too bad, because the idea was very good.

Rita è una ragazza ebrea nella Polonia che si trova ad affrontare l'invasione nazista e quella sovietica, il ghetto e gli infiniti pericoli che la sua condizione ebrea le mette davanti. Il suo aspetto ariano, il suo coraggio, e una buona dose di pragmatismo che l'aiuta a vedere chiaramente in situazioni in cui altri perdono la testa, l'aiuteranno a superare la guerra, la perdita degli affetti, la distruzione del mondo che conosce e a costruirsi una nuova vita, senza mai perdere la sua sensibilità pur senza esserne vittima.
Bel libro, molto interessante e che presenta una protagonista femminile che agisce invece che piangersi addosso come spesso accade in letteratura.


Rita is a Jewish girl in Poland who faces the Nazi and the Soviet invasion, the ghetto and the many dangers that her Jewish state puts in front of her. Her Aryan appearance, her courage, and a good dose of pragmatism that helps her see clearly in situations where others lose their heads, will help to overcome the war, the loss of hers loved ones, the destruction of the world that she knows and to build a new life, without ever losing her sensitivity even without being a victim.
Beautiful book, very interesting and that has a female protagonist who acts rather than cry on as often happens in literature.

The Strasbourg Legacy

Nonostante risenta della sua età, ambientato com'è in un'epoca in cui la Germania era divisa in due e la guerra fredda minacciava di scaldarsi ogni giorno, si tratta di un libro ancora divertente e apprezzabile. L'autore raccoglie un po' dei miti relativi a criminali di guerra nazisti e li intreccia con fatti reali e, come in ogni buon libro di spie che si rispetti, fa sì che gli arci-nemici siano si trasformino nei migliori degli amici quando si tratta di togliere dalla circolazione terzi incomodi.
Ottima lettura, ma del tutto sconsigliabile a chi è un fanatico del complottismo.

Although affected by his age, set as it is at a time when Germany was divided into two and the Cold War threatened to warm up each day, it is a book still funny and valuable. The author collects a bit of the myths related to Nazi war criminals and weaves them with real facts and, as in any good book of spies worthy of respects, make the arch-enemies have notto become the best of friends when it comes to remove from the roads third wheels.
Good reading, but totally inadvisable for anyone who is a fanatic of conspiracy.

News From Berlin

Ambientato tra Berlino e Berna nei concitati giorni precedenti l'apertura del fronte russo da parte di Hitler, News from Berlin è soprattutto una storia d'amore, o meglio, di più amori, uniti e divisi dalla guerra, dalla paura e dalla codardia. Il libro è molto interessante, e alcuni dei personaggi sono molto ben delineati, l'atmosfera di paura e di sospetto che avvelena i loro rapporti è quasi palpabile.
Alcuni punti però non sono risolti, e alcune delle motivazioni di Oscar, quello che dovrebbe essere il personaggio principale attraverso le cui mosse si chiariscono quelle di tutti gli altri, decisamente poco chiare.

Set between Berlin and Bern in the tense days before the opening of the Russian front by Hitler, News from Berlin is above all a love story, or rather, the story of more loves, united and divided by war, fear and cowardice. The book is very interesting, and some of the characters are very well defined, the atmosphere of fear and suspicion that poison their relationship is almost palpable.
Some points, however, are not solved, and some of the reasons of Oscar, what should be the main character through whose moves are clarified those of all the other, very unclear.

The C Enigma

L'immaginario nazista ha fatto molte vittime, Spiros Gratsias è una di queste. The C Enigma è una brutta copia del Codice Da Vinci (che già era brutto) in termini di società segrete e complottismo, e credo che possa con facilità vincere il campionato mondiale delle scopiazzature da Internet in termini di notizie prese di peso da Wikipedia e inserite nel testo. Un lavoro da furbacchioni, non c'è che dire, che permette di aumentare senza troppa fatica il numero di pagine. I personaggi sono decisamente poco credibili e la scrittura è noiosa ai limiti del sopportabile. In più la copia in mio possesso è piena di errori di grammatica e ortografia.
Impresentabile.



The Nazi imagery has made many victims, Spiros Gratsias is one of them. The C Enigma is a bad copy of The Da Vinci Code (which was already bad) in terms of secret societies and conspiracy, and I think it can easily win the world championship of rip-off of Internet in terms of information taken from Wikipedia and entered directly in the text. A work for smartass, no doubt about it, which allows to improve the number of pages without much effort. The characters are definitely not credible and the writing is boring to the limits of the bearable. In addition, the copy I have is full of mistakes in grammar and spelling.
Unpresentable.

Basic Law: A Mystery of Cold War Europe

Una specie di complicata caccia al tesoro che parte dal suicidio di una nota esponente politica della sinistra tedesca ai tempi della guerra fredda per raccontare come, anche nella Germania post unificazione, siano ancora vivi e presenti gli ideali nazisti e di come, dietro il paravento del neonazismo più becero, ci siano in realtà al lavoro forze politiche ed economiche che sfruttano per i propri interessi il disagio sociale. Nonostante alcune ingenuità tipicamente americane - americano è l'autore e americani sono alcuni dei suoi protagonisti, il che da al loro essere naif una patina di credibilità - e nonostante la sua lunghezza e complicazione, con continui cambiamenti e rivolgimenti nella storia, è un ottimo romanzo che unisce intrattenimento e realtà storica.


A kind of complicated treasure hunt that starts from the suicide of a famous exponent of the German left politics at the time of the Cold War to tell how, even in the Germany after unification, Nazis ideals are still alive and present and how, behind the screen of the most vulgar neo-Nazism, political and economic forces are actually working exploiting for their own interests the social hardship. Despite some ingenuity typically American - American is author and Americans are some of its protagonists,thing that gives to their being naive a nuance of credibility - and despite its length and complexity, with constant changes and upheavals in history, this is a great novel that combines entertainment and historical reality.

Death of a Diva: From Berlin to Broadway

Morte di una diva, ma non una diva qualsiasi. Quella che viene trovata morta nel suo camerino di Broadway è la diva delle dive, colei che riesce a calarsi integralmente in ogni parte femminile, e nello stesso una donna bellissima e un simbolo della lotta contro il nazismo. La polizia pare ovviamente brancolare nel buio, prima interrogando con modi poco ortodossi la giovane maschera del teatro, colpevole di aver apparentemente fatto entrare l'assassino, e poi via via tutta la cerchia che circonda l'attrice. In vari momenti, con varie voci, le persone che compongono o hanno composto l'entourage dell'attrice, sia negli Stati Uniti sia nel passato, in Germania, raccontano la propria storia e la propria visione della donna morta, capace di scatenare amori assoluti ma un grande senso di inadeguatezza in chi la circondava. Da questo intreccio di voci e di storie pian piano emergerà il vero colpevole, ma tutti i protagonisti si troveranno ad affrontare se stessi.


Death of a diva, but not a common diva. The Bone Church

Due cose ho appreso da questo libro: l'esistenza del cosiddetto "Bambino di Praga", immagine sacra che non conoscevo, e del bizzarro ossario di Sedlec. Per il resto che dire? La storia fa acqua da tutte le parti, è noiosa, poco realistica e difficilmente collocabile. Mi spiego: data l'esistenza di un principio di realtà, che è il "mondo" in cui il romanzo si svolge, se questo principio contiene elementi di magia o miracolistica, sarà un fantasy, se non li contiene sarà un romanzo di altra natura. The Bone Church pretende di essere un romanzo storico, ma all'improvviso inserisce elementi magico-miracolistici non previsti, e la cosa mi ha molto disturbato.


Two things I learned from this book: the existence of the "Infant of Prague", sacred image I did not know, and of the bizarre Sedlec Ossuary. For everything else, what can we say? The history is full of holes on all sides, is boring, unrealistic and difficult to plase. Let me explain: given the existence of a reality principle, which is the "world" in which the novel takes place, if this principle contains elements of magic or miraculous, it will be a fantasy, if not, it will a different kind of novel. The Bone Church claims to be a historical novel, but suddenly inserts magical and miraculous elements not provided, and I fount the thing very disturbing.

Assimilated Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, 1940-1943

Un saggio molto interessante e molto ben documentato su un "episodio" eclatante, eppure poco conosciuto nei dettagli come quello della costituzione, vita quotidiana, deportazione e rivolta del ghetto ebraico di Varsavia.
A distanza di tanti anni, noi che conosciamo i fatti mostruosi della seconda guerra mondiale solo per quello che leggiamo sui libri, siamo tentati di pensare agli ebrei dell'epoca come a un corpo monolitico, un po' come volevano interpretarli i nazisti per disumanizzarli.
La realtà è che, come è logico che sia, gli ebrei non esistevano come corpus, ma i discendenti di israeliti appartenevano a un'infinita varietà di correnti politiche, linguistiche e filosofiche, e molti non erano più nemmeno di religione ebraica.
La Person focalizza il suo studio su alcune di queste correnti, quelle costituite da persone che prima della guerra si erano completamente assimilate alla società polacca, ne avevano assunto la lingua, la cultura e la religione, e ne studia reazioni e ruoli, oltre che le interazioni con le altre correnti, costituite da ebrei ortodossi che parlavano ebraico o yddish, oppure da sionisti politicizzati. Ne segue anche il percorso nel corso della rivolta e alla fine della guerra, puntando il dito sul permanere dell'antisemitismo nella società polacca e all'interno dello stesso Partito Comunista, che portò molti dei sopravvissuti all'olocausto a mantenere la facciata di una falsa identità cattolica o a emigrare in Palestina.
Lettura interessante anche per i non specialisti.


A very interesting and very well documented essay on an "episode" striking, yet little known in detail, as that of the constitution, daily life, deportation and revolt of the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw.
After so many years, we, that know the monstrous facts of World War II only to what we read in books, are tempted to think the Jews of the time as a monolithic body, a little bit in the way the Nazis wanted to dehumanize them.
The reality is that, as is logical, the Jews did not exist as a corpus, but the descendants of Israelites belonged to an infinite variety of political, linguistic and philosophical currents, and many were not even Jewish anymore.
Mr.s Person focuses her study on some of these currents, those consisting of people who before the war had completely assimilated to the Polish society, of wich they had taken language, culture and religion, studying their reactions and roles, as well as the interactions with other currents, consisting of Orthodox Jews who spoke Hebrew or Yddish or of politicized Zionist. She also follows the path in the course of the uprising and the end of the war, pointing to the persistence of anti-Semitism in Polish society and within the Communist Party itself, which brought many of the Holocaust survivors to maintain the facade of a false Catholic identity or emigrate to Palestine.
Interesting reading even for non-specialists.

A World Without Jews: The Nazi Imagination from Persecution to Genocide

Come sanno tutti coloro che mi conoscono, io sono un'appassionata lettrice di narrativa e saggistiche riguardanti il nazismo e l'Olocausto. Si tratta di un periodo storico accompagnato da un atteggiamento morale così incomprensibile per me, da spingermi a leggere ogni singolo pezzo di carta che sia stato scritto al riguardo.
Ciò che, nonostante tutto quello che ho letto, non sono mai riuscita a cogliere fino in fondo, è la motivazione profonda di tutto ciò. Perché va bene l'antisemitismo, vanno bene le motivazioni economiche, vanno bene le rivendicazioni territoriali, ma dietro un progetto di sterminio così completo, articolato, lucido e perfettamente condotto ci vuole qualcosa di più. Così come ci vuole qualcosa di più per trasformare il pacifico vicino in uno spietato aguzzino, e far sì che un intero popolo commetta atti di cui di solito si macchiano solo le frange più estreme e instabili di una popolazione normale. Molte risposte le ho trovate in questo volume, così chiaro e ben documentato, tanti tasselli del puzzle nazismo - popolo tedesco sono finalmente andati al loro posto. Una lettura davvero importante.


As anyone who knows me knows, I am a passionate reader of fiction and nonfiction about Nazism and the Holocaust. It is a historical period accompanied by a moral attitude so incomprehensible to me, to push me to read every single piece of paper that has been written about it.
What, after all what I've read, I've never managed to catch up in the end, is the motive of everything. Because anti-Semitism is good, are good economic reasons, are good territorial claims, but behind a project of extermination so complete, articulate, polished and perfectly conducted it takes something more. Just as it takes something more to transform the peaceful neighbor in a ruthless taskmaster, and to ensure that an entire people commit acts which usually stain only the most extreme and unstable o fa normal population. I found a lot of answers in this book, so clear and well documented, many pieces of the puzzle "Nazism - the German people" are finally went to their place. A reading really important.

Stalin's Gold

Un complicato plot che vede muoversi poliziotti inglesi, piloti da guerra polacchi, grandi truffatori internazionali, ladri, spie e un consistente carico d'oro, sul poco raccomandabile sfondo della Battaglia d'Inghilterra, l'estremo tentativo della Germania Nazista di invadere la Gran Bretagna, la cui mancata riuscita fu probabilmente il primo segnale della possibilità di sconfiggere quello che sembrava un nemico invincibile.
Il libro è, appunto, complesso, affascinante, ben scritto, con caratteri definiti a tutto tondo, che siano protagonisti o semplici comparse. L'unico momento di cedimento, ragione per la quale ho assegnato 3 stelle invece che 4, è la scena che si svolge ai tempi di Montezuma, che poteva essere evitata senza che il romanzo ne risentisse.


A complicated plot that sees British policemen, warplanes Poles pilot, big international crooks, thieves, spies and a large cargo of gold, move on the dodgy background of the Battle of Britain, the last attempt of Nazi Germany to invade the Great Britain, whose lack of success was probably the first sign of the possibility of defeat what looked like an invincible enemy.
The book is, in fact, complex, fascinating, well written, with characters defined in the round, they are actors or supernumeraries. The only moment of weakness, reason why I gave it 3 stars instead of 4, is the scene that takes place in the time of Montezuma, that could have been avoided without the novel clean state.

Come ho già notato in altri romanzi, anche in questo caso l'altalenare della storia tra passato e presente produce un effetto non particolarmente piacevole. In realtà sembra di leggere due romanzi, scritti da due autori diversi, con diverso linguaggio e diverse capacità di gestire storia e personaggi, i cui capitoli si alternano.
Le parti relative alla storia di Adele, il suo amore per Vladimir, la sua presa di coscienza nei confronti del suo background nazista, il suo accettare il campo di concentramento con l'aiuto di una fede santificante, sono semplicemente strepitose.
I capitoli contemporanei, la ricerca da parte di Sera del dipinto che ritrae Adele, il suo stesso personaggio, tanto insicuro e petulante quanto Adele è perfetta e luminosa, il suo innamoramento nei confronti di William, che ha il sapore del pretesto letterario, e persino il citare Dio e la fede, sembrano dei meri riempitivi.
Qualche svarione di troppo, tipo il non accorgersi della bellezza di William quando è vestito da giardiniere, e definirlo poi l'uomo più affascinante mai visto quando, poco dopo, ha indossato i panni di uomo d'affari.





As I've already noted in other novels, also in this case the seesawing of the history between past and present produces a not particularly pleasant effect. In fact it seems to read two novels, written by two different authors, with different language and different capacities to manage the story and characters, whose chapters alternate.
The parties related to the history of Adele, her love for Vladimir, her grip of conscience against her Nazi background, her accepting the life in the extermination camp with the help of a sanctifying faith, are simply amazing.
The chapters in the present, Sera's search of the painting that portrays Adele, his own character, so insecure and petulant as Adele is perfect and bright, her falling in love against William, who has the flavor of literary pretext, and even the mention God and faith, seem mere fillers.
Some blunders too, like Sera not noticing the beauty of William when he is dressed as a gardener, and then say that the man is the most charmingly she ever seen when, shortly after, he dresses the part of businessman.

L'assedio nazista di Stalingrado, ovvero il momento in cui il corso della storia, che sembrava voler consegnare l'Europa al reich millenario, è cambiato. L'eroismo di quella città martire, dei suoi abitanti indomiti, che ha insegnato di nuovo agli invasori una lezione evidentemente non ben compresa ai tempi di Napoleone.
All'interno di questa cornice eroica c'è una storia piccola, per certi versi tragicomica, che mostra come persino all'interno di una città assediata e che muore di fame c'è chi muore un po' di più e chi un po' di meno.
Ed ecco che una improbabile coppia di eroi, un soldato disertore e un ragazzino beccato a saccheggiare un cadavere tedesco, viene mandata in missione per conto di un alto capo del partito, missione assurda e per certi versi un po' ignobile, che però permetterà ai due di mostrare di che pasta sono veramente fatti.
Tra tutti i personaggi emerge quello di Kolja, il soldato disertore, un autentico russo come se ne trovano nei romanzi di Tolstoj.
Avrebbe meritato cinque stelle, non fosse stato per qualche congiuntivo sbagliato di troppo nella traduzione italiana.

C'è tutto un immaginario relativo alle donne del nazismo, un immaginario che ne fa delle specie di oggetti erotici per feticisti, ma chi erano davvero queste donne?
Il saggio della Lower ne individua alcune, donne normali ben integrate nella società tedesca, diventate a poco a poco mostri, e, generalmente, non punite per i loro crimini in quanto considerate da chi le doveva giudicare meno importanti per il sistema nazismo degli uomini al cui fianco erano. Si tratta di segretarie, infermiere, maestre, ma anche normali donne di casa, mogli di SS o cose simili.
Alla fine niente spiega perché siano diventate così, forse solo una frase, pronunciata da una di loro: non volevamo essere da meno degli uomini.


There's a whole imaginary related to  Nazi women, an imagination that makes them the kind of erotic objects for fetishists, but who really were these women?
The essay of Lower identifies some of them, normal women well integrated in the German society, that gradually become monsters, and generally not punished for their crimes because they were considered by those who had to judge less important of the men whose side were in the Nazi system. They were secretaries, nurses, teachers, but also ordinary housewives, wives of SS or something.
In the end nothing explains why they  so, perhaps just a phrase, uttered by one of them: we did not want to be outdone by the men.

Accattivante come un romanzo, Il giardino delle bestie è in realtà una documentata biografia di William Dodd, ambasciatore americano nella Germania di Hitler, oltre che l'unica persona intellettualmente abbastanza onesta, oltre che resa perspicace per via della propria formazione di storico, da rendersi conto della reale pericolosità di Hitler, della totale follia dei suoi accoliti, e dell'orrore del suo regime.


Captivating like a novel, In the Garden of Beasts is actually a documented biography of William Dodd, the American ambassador to Hitler's Germany, as well as the only person intellectually honest enough, as well as insightful because of his formation as historian, to make himself account of the real danger of Hitler, the utter madness of his acolytes, and the horror of his regime.
