Secondo libro di una serie, la narrazione parte con un cadavere e un fidanzamento. Il cadavere è quello di una giovane insegnante americana che lavora negli emirati, e il fidanzamento è quello tra Maryam, studentessa universitaria di ceto elevato, e Ali, giovane investigatore della polizia di stato. Ragione di questo fidanzamento abbastanza fuori dagli schemi? I due si sono trovati insieme in un'occasione precedente, dando origine a una serie di eventi i cui strascichi percorrono tutta questa storia, nella quale la trama gialla è un pretesto per parlare di un mondo dove giovani donne di ceto elevato prima ricevono un'educazione internazionale, per essere poi costrette a rinchiudersi in casa, in balia della famiglia del marito prima ancora del marito stesso, in ruoli tradizionali che detestano.
E, mentre l'indagine sull'omicidio prosegue fino alla sua non scontata conclusione, Maryam comincia a scoprire che questo "marito per caso", al quale i genitori hanno ritenuto di affidarla un po' per punizione per aver rifiutato partiti più ambiziosi e un po' per evitare lo scandalo, forse è una sorte migliore di quella che avrebbe potuto aspettarsi.
Romanzo ben scritto, coi giusti tempi del romanzo giallo, e molto interessante per la conoscenza diretta di un modo di vivere che ci sembra lontano, eppure diventa ogni giorno più urgente comprendere.


Second book in a series, the story starts with a dead body and an engagement. The corpse is that of a young American teacher working in the Emirates, and the engagement is between Maryam, university student of upper class, and Ali, a young investigator of the state police. Ground for this engagement quite out of the box? The two were found together on a previous occasion, giving rise to a series of events whose train runs throughout this story, in which the chriminal plot is an excuse to talk about a world where young upper-class women previously receive an international education, only to be then forced to shut theirselves in the house, at the mercy of her husband's family before the husband himself, in traditional roles they hate.
And while the murder investigation continues until its not obvious conclusion, Maryam begins to discover that this 'husband by chance', to which the parents have decided to entrust her a little as punishment for refusing more ambitious parties and a bit to avoid scandal, perhaps it's a better fate than she would have expected.
Novel well-written, with the mystery novel right times, and very interesting for the direct knowledge of a way of life that seems far away, yet it becomes daily more urgent to understand.

The Quantum Cop

Meant to grasp a little physic to adolescents, this novel is based on a flippant use of quantum mechanics, just learnt from the new teacher of theoretical physics, by a couple of not extactly model college students, who use it to illegally enrich themselves by robberies. The beautiful teacher, with the help of her new, charming boyfriend, in turn trained in the uses of quantum mechanics, gets involved in the fight against the two new supercriminal, that she defeats in a battle full of special effects.
Novel for teenagers, as I said, with all the limits of the genre: the beutiful professor has obviously an ex-boyfriend who cheats on her as she looks away; the new boyfriend is obviously beautiful and with wonderful blue eyes, despite being a Chicano; the two young students mastered in a short time quantum mechanics, acquiring super powers that not even Superman, and so on.
The dialogues are very childish and very often the cause-effect relationships are not very clear.
That said, for the sake of physics, you can give it in reading, provided that the readers have no more than 18 years.

Lesley L. Smith, Ph.D. has earned a plethora of degrees, including a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Elementary Particle Physics. In 2012, she added to her collection by completing her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction at Seton Hill University. Dr. Smith’s short science fiction has been published in several venues, such as "Analog Science Fiction and Fact," "Daily Science Fiction," and Nano Meets Macro. Inteso come strumento per far digerire un po' di fisica agli adolescenti, questo romanzo si fonda sull'uso disinvolto della meccanica quantistica, appena appresa dalla nuova insegnante di fisica teorica, da parte di un paio di studenti universitari non esattamente modello, che se ne servono per arricchirsi in modo illecito a suon di rapine. La bella insegnante, con l'aiuto del suo nuovo, affascinante fidanzato, a sua volta istruito negli usi della meccanica quantistica, viene coinvolta nella lotta contra i due nuovi superdelinquenti, che sconfiggerà in una battaglia a colpi di effetti speciali.
Romanzo per adolescenti, come ho già detto, con tutti i limite del genere: la bella professoressa ha ovviamente un ex fidanzato, che la tradisce appena lei gira lo sguardo; il nuovo fidanzato è ovviamente bellissimo e con meravigliosi occhi azzurri, nonostante sia un chicano; i due studentelli padroneggiano in brevissimo tempo la meccanica quantistica, acquisendo superpoteri che nemmeno Superman, e via discorrendo.
I dialoghi sono molto infantili e, molto spesso, i rapporti di causa-effetto non sono molto chiari.
Detto questo, per amor della fisica, lo si può dare in lettura, purché i lettori non abbiano più di 18 anni.

Guadalupe, detta Lupita è una poliziotta di città del Messico. Un giorno, mentre dirige il traffico fuori da un evento politico assiste allo strano omicidio del delegado per il quale sta lavorando. Questo omicidio scatena una catena di eventi che portano alla luce i pro e i contro di Lupita, che è sì una poliziotta, ma anche un'alcolizzata, che è stata in prigione per aver ucciso involontariamente il figlio mentre era ubriaca, e ha una bassissima stima di se stessa. Ma nell'onestà del delegado aveva creduto, così inizia una serie di indagini poco ortodosse, nelle quali deve impiegare i sui numerosi talenti, che uno alla volta torna a scoprire, come scoprirà l'amore e una nuova consapevolezza che le deriva direttamente dall'aver ripreso contatto con la conoscenza ancestrale del suo popolo. Purtroppo scoprirà anche che il delegado non era così onesto come lei aveva creduto e che in fin dei conti sta meglio morto che vivo, ma se ne farà una ragione.
Romanzo interessante, divertente, nel corso del quale ci si ritrova spesso a fare il tifo per la protagonista, ben scritto e molto ben tradotto.


Guadalupe, called Lupita is a policewoman in Mexico city. One day, while directing traffic outside a political event, she witnesses the strange murder of the delegado for which is working. This murder sets off a chain of events reveal the pros and cons of Lupita, who is a policewoman, but also an alcoholic, who has been in prison for accidentally killing her son while she was drunk, and has a very low estimate of herself. But she believed to the honesty of the delegado, so begins a series of unorthodox investigation, where she shall employ her many talents, that one at a time she will explore, discovering how to love and a new awareness that comes directly from the contact with the ancestral knowledge of her people she has resumed. Unfortunately she also discovers that the delegado was not as honest as she had thought, and that in the end he is better dead than alive, but she will accept the inevitable.
Interesting and fun, fun, reading which you often find yourself supporting for the protagonist, well written and very well translated..

Un'altra storia di Yellowthread Street, nell'immaginario quartiere Hong Bay a Hong Kong. Questa volta i poliziotti e i detective della locale stazione di polizia sono alle prese con delle lettere bomba inviati ad alcuni commercianti del quartiere. Nonostante il bombarolo avvisi ogni volta la polizia delle sue intenzioni, il detective capo Feiffer ha le mani legate, perché i suoi superiori ritengono che si tratti di attentati terroristici, dei quali la popolazione non deve essere messa al corrente.
Ma Feiffer è convinto del contrario e proseguirà testardamente le sue indagini, fino a individuare il colpevole e il sordido movente.
In tutto questo il vice di Feiffer, l'anglocinese O'Yee, si fa venire una crisi d'identità alla ricerca delle sue vere radici, e antepone alle indagini la ricerca di un tucano impagliato, che finisce per saltare fuori nel posto meno probabile
Forse il meno umoristico della serie, è forse il più interessante dal punto di vista della parte "gialla" della trama. I personaggi, che nei primi due volumi erano piuttosto tratteggiati, sono in quest'ultimo libro molto più dettagliati e godibili.


Another Yellowthread Street story, imaginary Hong Bay district in Hong Kong. This time the policemen and the detective of the local police station struggles with letter bombs sent to some of the neighborhood merchants. Despite the bomber alerts every time the police of his intentions, the chief detective Feiffer's hands are tied, because his superiors believe that this is a terrorist attack, of which the population must mot be made aware.
But Feiffer is convinced of the contrary, and stubbornly continue his investigation, until he finds the culprit and the sordid motivation.
In all this Feiffer's deputy, the anglocinese O'Yee, busts an identity crisis in search of his true roots, and place the searching for a stuffed toucan before the investigation, toucan which ends up jumping out in the perhaps less the least likely place.
Perhaps the less humorous of the series, it is maybe the most interesting from the point of view of the crimi part of the plot. The characters, which in the first two volumes were rather dashed, are in this book much more detailed and enjoyable.

Last Winter We Parted

Un giovane giornalista viene incaricato di scrivere un libro su un uomo che ha commesso due efferati omicidi, bruciando vive due donne. Va in carcere a trovarlo, ed esce dal colloquio molto disturbato. Qualcosa in quell'uomo e nella sua storia lo inquieta molto, così come lo inquieta la sua maniacale passione per la fotografia. Seguendo gli indizi che gli dà il fotografo, il giornalista ne incontra la sorella, anche lei con una personalità disturbata, e il misterioso fabbricante di bambole, che gli consegna le fotografie delle donne in fiamme, che tutti ritengono inesistenti. Ma c'è un improvviso cambio di punto di vista, e la storia viene raccontata in un altro modo, da qualcun altro, ancora più disturbato del fotografo, qualcuno che ha pianificato una orrenda vendetta.
Un libro tipicamente giapponese, troppo giapponese per i miei gusti, con personaggi troppo lontani dalla mia sensibilità europea, anche se è stata a suo tempo nutrita da molto Mishima.


A young journalist is commissioned to write a book about a man who has committed two heinous killings, burning alive two women. He gos to prison to visit the man, and leaves the interview very disturbed. Something in the man and in his history grows him very disturbed, as grows him disturbed the man's maniacal passion for photography. Following the clues that gives him the photographer, the journalist met his sister, also with a disturbed personality, and the mysterious dolls maker, who gives him the photographs of women on fire, everyone assumes nonexistent. But there is a sudden change of perspective, and the story is told in another way, by someone else, even more disturbed than the photographer, someone who has planned a hideous revenge.
A typically Japanese book, too much Japanese for my taste, with characters too far away from my European sensibility, even if it was nourished for a long time with a lot of Mishima.

Sceso in fondo all'abisso della depressione a causa della morte della moglie e dei suoi due figli in un incidente aereo, il protagonista cerca un appiglio per tornare a vivere nello studio di sconosciuti capolavori del cinema muto aventi come protagonista un misterioso e affascinante comico, scomparso improvvisamente e senza lasciare tracce. Questa ossessione si trasforma in un libro e questo libro apre la porta a una serie di eventi imprevedibili che, come una valanga, travolgono tutto ciò che incontrano in una furia di fuoco e morte, ma, incredibilmente, lo lasciano risanato, capace di vivere, anche se, forse, non felice. Questo libro è un viaggio senza ritorno dentro la follia, una ricerca della verità che porta solo confusione, un amore troppo intenso e troppo breve, e una speranza, o meglio, una illusione, che tutto ciò che è accaduto non sia accaduto per niente.

A Lady in the Smoke: A Victorian Mystery

Una specie di Orgoglio e pregiudizio al contrario e con mistero. Una giovane Lady e sua madre rimangono coinvolte in un terribile incidente ferroviario, e si salvano solo grazie all'aiuto di un giovane "chirurgo delle ferrovie", un praticante privo di laurea in medicina, ma assai preparato e pieno di idee innovative. Purtroppo però l'incidente ferroviario non è stato così casuale, ma è parte di uno schema di eventi che rischia di far finire sul lastrico proprio la famiglia della giovane Lady. Ovviamente le orrende trame verranno sventate e l'amore trionferà.
Bel libro, molto ben scritto, ben documentato per quanto riguarda gli usi e costumi dei tempi e con una protagonista caparbia al punto giusto.

A kind of Pride and prejudice in reverse and with mystery. A young Lady and her mother are involved in a terrible train accident, and saved only with the help of a young 'Surgeon of the railways', a practitioner with no medical degree, but very prepared and full of innovative ideas. Unfortunately the train accident was not so random, but part of a pattern of events that threatens to go broke just the young Lady family. Of course the horrendous plots will be foiled and love will triumph.
Beautiful book, very well written, well documented with regard to the times and customs, and with a just enough stubborn main character.

The Case of the Toxic Spell Dump

Come sarebbe il mondo se, al posto di una rivoluzione industriale, ci fosse stata una rivoluzione magica, e con questa stravagante energia funzionasse il mondo? Naturalmente tutte le leggi dell'alchimia sarebbero valide, e tutti gli dei - e ribadisco tutti - esisterebbero con pari dignità. Questo è il mondo che ci racconta Turtledove in questo divertente romanzo, nel quale un impiegatuccio dell'EPA, Ente per la purezza dell'ambiente, che oltre alla sigla ha anche le funzioni, seppur in ambito magico, dell'Ente per la protezione dell'ambiente, si trova a indagare su quello che sembra un semplice caso di inquinamento magico ed è invece una lotta tra dei che potrebbe portare alla Terza Guerra Mondiale, magica naturalmente.
Nonostante qualche lungaggine di troppo in alcuni punti, davvero molto divertente.

This is the world that Turtledove tells us in this fun novel, in which a low rank EPA clerk, Environmental Purity Agency, which in addition to the acronym also features, albeit in a magical context, the Environmental Protection Agency, is to investigate what seems like a simple case of magical pollution and is instead a battle between the gods that could lead to World War III, sorcerous of course.
Despite some slowness too much in some places, very funny.

Mrs Hudson and the Malabar Rose

Ultimamente il personaggio di Sherlok Holmes è tornato di gran moda, e non si contano i film più o meno ispirati ai libri originali di Conan Doyle, né gli apocrifi, sia cinematografici che letterari. In questo filone si inserisce questo corposo romanzo per giovani adulti, abbastanza divertente anche per lettori più scafati, nel quale Scherlok Holmes viene nettamente surclassato dalla sua governante, la poderosa Mrs. Hudson, maestra della cucina come del pensiero logico, e decisamente propensa all'uso di metodi non convenzionali per venire a capo dei problemi.

Lately the character of Sherlock Holmes is back in fashion, and it is impossible to count the films more or less inspired by the original books by Conan Doyle, nor the apocryphal, both cinematographic and literary. In this line fits this substantial novel for young adults, funny enough even for more seasoned readers, in which Scherlok Holmes is clearly outclassed by his housekeeper, the mighty Mrs. Hudson, mistress both of the kitchen and the logical thinking, and very prone to the use of unconventional methods to get on top of problems.

L'uomo è andato sulla luna, ma gli strampalati abitanti del The Morpheum a malapena lo sanno, presi come sono a vivere le loro vite bizzarre e involute. Tra di loro la stella è la bella Nancy, della quale è innamorato Willy, un ragazzo con parecchi problemi, ma buono e sincero. Se non che una brutta mattina Nancy viene ritrovata morta di overdose nella sua camera chiusa a chiave, ragione per cui la polizia non si da molto da fare e dichiara il caso chiuso. Tutti sono convinti che la ragazza abbia avuto un incidente o abbia deciso di suicidarsi, meno Willy, che fin dall'inizio è certo che sia stata uccisa. Inizia così le sue assurde indagini con l'aiuto di alleati bizzarri, tra i quali spicca Mr. Winkley...
Un classico mistero della camera chiusa, ma molto divertente, insolito e ben scritto.


The man went to the moon, but the bizarre inhabitants of The Morpheum barely know it, taken as they are to live their bizarre and convoluted lives. The star among them is the beautiful Nancy, of whom Willy is in love with. Willy is a guy with a lot of problems, but good and sincere. But a bad morning Nancy is found dead of an overdose in his locked room, reason for which the police doesn't do much and declare the case closed. Everyone is convinced that she has had an accident, or has decided to commit suicide, but not Willy, who from the beginning is certain that she was killed. Thus began his absurd investigations with the help of bizarre allies, among them Mr. Winkley ...
A classic locked room mystery, but very funny, unusual and well written.

Calling

Trovo abbastanza difficoltoso esprimere un giudizio su questo libro. E' scritto bene, la trama accattivante, l'interazione e il parallelismo tra i due protagonisti praticamente perfetto, eppure non mi è possibile dare di più di 3 stelline.
Uno dei due protagonisti è una specie di angelo caduto: pastore protestante per gran parte della sua vita, predicatore di buon livello, porta in sé una specie di peccato originale che è il retaggio di suo padre, a sua volta predicatore, ma dongiovanni e violento. Una volta rotti gli argini, diventerà a sua volta un dongiovanni e un violento, e una buona dose di acido farà il resto.
L'altro è un cattivo ragazzo di terza categoria, anche suo padre è un dongiovanni, pur se non violento, e sua madre è una fanatica religiosa. Di professione DJ radiofonico, passa la sua vita cambiando lavoro e città a causa delle sue cattive abitudini.
Un lungo viaggio in pullman mette i due uomini a confronto, fa sì che raccontino l'uno all'altro la propria vita.
Fin qui tutto bene, ma quando il romanzo avrebbe potuto chiudersi in gloria, arriva un ultimo capitolo, del tutto inutile e privo di logica, che ne riduce clamorosamente il valore.


I find quite difficult to make a judgment on this book. It's well written, has a captivating storyline, the interaction and the parallelism between the two protagonists is almost perfect, yet I can not give more than 3 stars.
One of the two main characters is kind of a fallen angel: Protestant pastor for most of his life, a preacher of good level, possesses a kind of original sin, which is the legacy of his father, in turn preacher, but womanizer and violent. Once broken hisbanks, in turn, become a womanizer and a violent too, and a good dose of acid will do the rest.
The other is a bad guy in the third category, although his father is a womanizer, though not violent, and his mother is a religious fanatic. Radio DJ by profession, spends his spends his life changing work and city because of his bad habits.
A long bus trip puts the two men in comparison, makes that tell each other their lives.
So far so good, but when the novel could have shut in glory, comes a final chapter, totally unnecessary and devoid of logic, which reduces dramatically the value of the story.

Murder on Thames

Un romanzo giallo lieve come una piuma, scritto da un americano ma ambientato sulle sponde del Tamigi. Un detective americano in pensione si ritrova coinvolto nel tentativo di soluzione di una morte inspiegabile, classificata come suicidio dalla polizia britannica, da parte della migliore amica di gioventù della vittima. Facile immaginare che nel seguito della storia (questo romanzo è il primo di una serie prevista di 12) i due oltre che soci diventino qualcosa di più l'uno per l'altro.
Parecchi stereotipi, da parte dell'americano nei confronti degli inglese, e da parte degli inglesi nei confronti dell'americano, che viene quasi trattato da abominio.
Gradevole ma non intrigante.


A mistery novel light as a feather, written by an American but set on the banks of the Thames. A retired American detective finds himself caught in the attempt to resolve a unexplained death classified as suicide by the British police, by the best friend of youth of the victim. Easy to imagine that later in the history (this novel is the first in a planned series of 12) the two partnes will become something more the one for the other.
Several stereotypes, by American against the English, and by the British against the American, who is  treated almost as an abomination.
Pleasant but not intriguing.

Death-Watch

Un assassinio pretestuoso e arzigogolato, messo in opera con uno strumento fuori dal comune, da un personaggio dalla psicologia improbabile. Una metodica di indagine indiziaria al limite della nebulosità e personaggi caricaturali rendono questo corposo giallo classico inglese uno dei più noiosi che abbia mai letto.
Senza contare che la quarta di copertina è fuorviante.

A pretentious and convoluted murder , put in place with a tool out of the ordinary, from a character with an unlikely psychology. A method of investigation based on evidence at the limit of nebulosity and caricature characters make this full-bodied classic yellow English one of the most boring I've ever read.
Not to mention that the back cover is misleading.

Joyland

E' forse la prima volta che assegno tre stelline a un libro del Re, e aggiungo anche che il giudizio è sospeso.
La storia è molto interessante, una delle tipiche storie di formazione che King in questi anni ci ha donato a piene mani, che comprende un orrendo mistero, una scena adrenalinica, e un finale pacificatore. Il problema è che il tutto non suona, più che la voce di King se ne sente il sussurro. Uno spettro della potenza dello scrittore che mi ha fatto fare un balzo indietro negli anni, alle prime traduzioni decisamente approssimative. Ho come l'impressione che S&K stia cercando di tirare il collo alla sua gallina dalle uova d'oro risparmiando sulla traduzione, e sulla correzione di bozze, pure, per non parlar dell'editing.
Insomma che adesso aspetto di ricevere l'edizione originale per un giudizio definitivo.


It is perhaps the first time that I assign three stars to a book of the King, and I add also that the judgment is suspended.
The story is very interesting, one of the typical bildungsroman that King has profusely given us over the years, comprising a hideous mystery, an adrenaline-pumping scene, and a peacekeeping end. The problem is that the whole thing does not sound, rather than King's voice we hear his whisper. A spectrum of the writer's power that made me take a leap back in time, to the first very rough translations. I have the impression that S&K is trying to pull the neck to his goose that lays the golden eggs saving on translation and proofreading, as well, not to speak of editing. So now I expect to receive the original edition for a final judgment.

Il senso di una fine

Dopo quarant'anni, dopo tutta una vita, il protagonista riceve un lascito di cui dovrebbe fare parte il diario del più brillante dei suoi compagni di scuola e amici, inspiegabilmente suicidatosi a vent'anni. Del diario riceverà una sola pagina, ma dovrà comunque ripensare a sé stesso, al senso della vita, ai suoi rapporti con gli altri, alle sue convinzioni e pregiudizi, fino a scoprire che lui è l'uomo che non capisce, quello che non ha mai capito.
Molto inglese, molto ben scritto, decisamente affascinante.


Forty years later, after a whole life, the protagonist receives a legacy of which should be part the diary of the most brilliant of his classmates and friends, who inexplicably committed suicide at twenty. Of this diary he will receive only one page, however he must rethink about himself, the meaning of life, his relations with others, about his convictions and prejudices, until he discovers that he is the man who does not understand, who doesn't never understood.
Very English, very well written, quite charming.

Un treno bloccato in mezzo alla neve, una variante del classico delitto della camera chiusa, un movente che viene da lontano e che ha tutte le caratteristiche del complotto, e poi l'enorme, disincantata intelligenza di Poirot, che da indizi inesistenti trova la soluzione del caso. Libro piacevolissimo, ma credibile solo nel mondo della Christie.


A train stuck in the snow, one of the classic crime of the closed chamber variant, a motive that comes from afar and that has all the characteristics of the conspiracy, and then the huge, disenchanted intelligence of  Poirot, that from nonexistent clues finds the solution of the case.
Delightful book, but credible only in the world of Christie.

Libro lieve e divertente, piuttosto ben scritto e con una ambientazione esotica.
La storia è fatta più di buon senso e buoni sentimenti che altro, il lieto fine è scontato, ma è una buona compagnia per passare un pomeriggio.

Libro interessantissimo eppure altalenante, con le sue diverse parti che non comunicano benissimo tra di loro.
C'è la storia di un omicidio all'interno di una morbosa setta poligama, e la storia vera, seppure in parte romanzata, della donna che in qualche modo ha costretto i mormoni a rinunciare alla poligamia.
C'è anche un lieto fine gay.
Libro più interessante per meriti storici che per meriti giallistici.
