Todesstille über Föhr

Cornelia Härtl

My rating: 4/5

Kari Lürsen is a former BKA officer – the German Federal Criminal Police Office – who now trains special investigative teams to combat crime. This does not mean that her life is any quieter now; in fact, she finds herself investigating a strange case on the small island of Föhr, an 82-square-kilometre speck of land in the North Sea, where she had planned to spend the days leading up to New Year’s Eve with her boyfriend, who runs a local pub.
Instead, a woman is found murdered in a holiday flat. Her identity is unknown because both her documents and the banknotes she used to pay some of her expenses turn out to be forged. Shortly afterwards, another body is discovered, this time that of a man who appears to have committed suicide by hanging himself from the shutter of a closed bar.
The two cases might not even be connected, were it not for the fact that the man is carrying a scarf that is clearly part of a set which also includes the hat and gloves found in the woman’s flat. It is an unusual set, moreover, as all three items are handmade and of the very highest quality.
To complicate matters further, Kari’s current boss and her former boss at the BKA intervene. Whilst entrusting her with the investigation, they assign Sebastian – one of her trainees, with whom she has had a difficult working relationship in the past – to assist her. As if that were not enough, they clearly withhold information that they possess and order the pair to remain completely silent about the investigation.
The story that unfolds leads the two detectives – who gradually overcome their mutual mistrust – to delve into the pasts of the two victims, until they uncover a criminal racket that preys on lonely women longing for affection. The racket is led by a man who has no scruples and is particularly dangerous because he is part of the system.
All in all, a fine novel that, despite being the fifth in the series, can be read without too much concern for the previous instalments, and that pays particular attention to the characters’ emotions and psychological depth.

I Know What You Did

Cayce Osborne

My rating:  2/5

Petta Woznewski is a middle-aged woman, bitter and in constant conflict with life. She lives in New York, has a job that provides her with a decent living but offers little intellectual stimulation, has a part-time boyfriend to whom she gives plenty of sex but little affection, so as not to get too close, and tries not to think about her past.
Until one day – at the gynaecologist’s, of all places – she discovers that a thriller has recently been published, which has quickly become a bestseller, and whose protagonist has a name almost identical to her own: Petal Woznewski. The problem is that Petta’s real name is actually Petal, and the story described in the thriller – in which she is undoubtedly the murderer – is that of her own past.
The author of the novel writes under a pseudonym, but seems to know the facts very, very well, to the point that Petal can only think of one person who could have written it: Jenny, the third member of the teenage friendship that bound Petal, Jenny and Megan together – a friendship that ended with Megan’s death.
Determined to get to the bottom of things and establish the truth – that Megan’s death was a tragic accident – Petal returns to her hometown of Madison, where lies, ghosts from the past, sheer madness and, finally, the decision to shed the armour she has built around herself await her, so that she can finally have a better life.
The novel is rather weak and easily predictable, with the causal links feeling rather far-fetched and the ending decidedly conventional. The final section, moreover, is, in my view, superfluous, because what will become of Petal’s life after this adventure is clear from the moment she decides that saving Gus is her priority.
Pages and pages of good intentions that are obvious from the outset, in other words.
The best part – the one that partly saves the novel – is the excerpts from the supposed bestseller that set the story in motion; these are decidedly well written.
