Non sono rimasta completamente soddisfatta da questo romanzo. Sarà forse per il suo sembrare una via di mezzo tra un omaggio e una presa in giro al lavoro di Stepehn King, oppure per la sua trama, forse volutamente già sentita, ma senza quei guizzi che avrebbero potuto trasformare una rimasticatura in qualcosa di completamente nuovo, in qualcosa che presenti il vecchio sotto un inaspettato punto di vista. Il finale poi, è particolarmente debole.
Solo l'ottima scrittura e il grande mestiere dell'autrice salvano questo libro da un punteggio più basso.


I was not completely satisfied with this novel. Perhaps because it looks like a cross between a tribute and a mockery to Stepehn King's work, or for its plot, perhaps deliberately "already heard", but without those flashes that could turn a rehash into something completely new, something that presents the old under an unexpected point of view. The final then, is particularly weak.
Only the excellent writing and the great craft of the author save this book from a lower score.

L'evento fa parte della storia, anche se quasi sicuramente ormai dimenticato. Il fratello più giovane di John e Robert Kennedy, Ted, a suo volta senatore, ebbe in incidente guidando ubriaco, e in questo incidente perse la vita una ragazza, di cui si disse che fosse la sua segretaria amante.
La storia che scrive la Oats è romanzata, i nomi alterati, ma è facile, per chi ancora ricorda, riconoscere il riferimento.
Tutto il libro è scritto dal punto di vista della protagonista morente, che non riesce a credere si essere stata abbandonata.
Un po' forzato e privo di vera ispirazione, ma piuttosto ben scritto.


The event is part of history, although almost certainly forgotten. The younger brother of John and Robert Kennedy, Ted, at the time himself a senator, had in an incidente while driving drunk, and in this incident a girl, whose was said to be his secretary-lover, lost his life.
Oats writes a fictionalized story with modified names, but it is easy for those who still remember, recognize the reference.
he whole book is written from the point of view of the dying female protagonist, who can not believe to have been abandoned.
A bit forced and without true inspiration, but rather well-written.
