The Quantum Cop

Meant to grasp a little physic to adolescents, this novel is based on a flippant use of quantum mechanics, just learnt from the new teacher of theoretical physics, by a couple of not extactly model college students, who use it to illegally enrich themselves by robberies. The beautiful teacher, with the help of her new, charming boyfriend, in turn trained in the uses of quantum mechanics, gets involved in the fight against the two new supercriminal, that she defeats in a battle full of special effects.
Novel for teenagers, as I said, with all the limits of the genre: the beutiful professor has obviously an ex-boyfriend who cheats on her as she looks away; the new boyfriend is obviously beautiful and with wonderful blue eyes, despite being a Chicano; the two young students mastered in a short time quantum mechanics, acquiring super powers that not even Superman, and so on.
The dialogues are very childish and very often the cause-effect relationships are not very clear.
That said, for the sake of physics, you can give it in reading, provided that the readers have no more than 18 years.

Lesley L. Smith, Ph.D. has earned a plethora of degrees, including a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Elementary Particle Physics. In 2012, she added to her collection by completing her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction at Seton Hill University. Dr. Smith’s short science fiction has been published in several venues, such as "Analog Science Fiction and Fact," "Daily Science Fiction," and Nano Meets Macro. She is an active member of the Science Fiction/Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) and Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers (RMFW), and is also the founder and editor of Electric Spec.

Dr. Smith has held a variety of scientific jobs, including investigating quarks, dark matter, extrasolar planets, clouds, atmospheric chemistry, and global warming. She has worked for a variety of research institutions, while her nonfiction articles have been published in venues that include the Physical Review and Modern Physics Letters. She is a long-time member of the American Physical Society (APS)  and The American Geophysical Union (AGU).

Inteso come strumento per far digerire un po' di fisica agli adolescenti, questo romanzo si fonda sull'uso disinvolto della meccanica quantistica, appena appresa dalla nuova insegnante di fisica teorica, da parte di un paio di studenti universitari non esattamente modello, che se ne servono per arricchirsi in modo illecito a suon di rapine. La bella insegnante, con l'aiuto del suo nuovo, affascinante fidanzato, a sua volta istruito negli usi della meccanica quantistica, viene coinvolta nella lotta contra i due nuovi superdelinquenti, che sconfiggerà in una battaglia a colpi di effetti speciali.
Romanzo per adolescenti, come ho già detto, con tutti i limite del genere: la bella professoressa ha ovviamente un ex fidanzato, che la tradisce appena lei gira lo sguardo; il nuovo fidanzato è ovviamente bellissimo e con meravigliosi occhi azzurri, nonostante sia un chicano; i due studentelli padroneggiano in brevissimo tempo la meccanica quantistica, acquisendo superpoteri che nemmeno Superman, e via discorrendo.
I dialoghi sono molto infantili e, molto spesso, i rapporti di causa-effetto non sono molto chiari.
Detto questo, per amor della fisica, lo si può dare in lettura, purché i lettori non abbiano più di 18 anni.

Il sindacato dei poliziotti yiddish

Lo stato di Israele non esiste, nel 1948 i palestinesi sono diventati i soli padroni di Gerusalemme e la diaspora degli ebrei continua. Gli Stati Uniti hanno offerto un pezzetto di Alaska, ovviamente sottraendola ai nativi americani, come patria provvisoria. Gli anni sono passati e in quella patria provvisoria gli ebrei yddish hanno prosperato, facendo la cosa che gli riesce meglio: dividersi in sette. La più potente di queste sette è quella dei Verbover, a tutti gli effetti una banda di criminali dediti ai traffici più sordidi, ma rispettando il sabato... e il giorno della restituzione si avvicina, il giorno in cui gli ebrei dovranno riprendere la strada della diaspora. Ma lo strano omicidio di un possibile Messia, due poliziotti yddish, uno dei quali però è un grosso nativo americano, una ex moglie che è anche un ispettore di polizia, e diversi avvenimenti molto concitati, tra i quali l'esplosione della grande Moschea di Gerusalemme, renderanno questo periodo di transizione molto movimentato. Alla fine, l'unico risultato certo sarà che gli ex non resteranno ex molto a lungo.
Pur con il suo tono umoristico, un romanzo profondo e molto interessante, una discreta analisi del mondo attuale.

Il mondo di Grimm

Vernor Vinge

Su un mondo alieno strano e affascinante si incontrano Svir, studente di astronomia, e Tatja, che si occupa della collana scientifica della più potente casa editrice del pianeta. Svir è un po' ingenuo e Tatja è bellissima, oltre che dotata di un'intelligenza superiore alla media, così non le riesce difficile usare Svir per portare avanti i suoi piani, il cui fine è nientemeno che la disperata ricerca di un uomo alla sua altezza. Quando però Tatja lo troverà, scoprirà che i suoi fini potrebbero non essere esattamente ciò che lei desidera.
Vinge ha messo decisamente troppa carne al fuoco, così facendo si è perso per strada moltissimi spunti. In realtà il romanzo smette di essere davvero interessante quando è chiaro che la meravigliose costruzione letteraria che è l'isola galleggiante-casa editrice non sarà l'ambientazione definitiva della storia. Tutto il resto è piuttosto tirato per i capelli.

Cristo marziano

La prima astronave terrestre atterra su Marte, in seguito a una spedizione organizzata perché, dopo molte osservazioni, una strana caratteristica del suolo marziano si è rivelata essere un'astronave sepolta. Due membri della spedizione, il capitano Orme e il suo vice, scendono a terra, altri due, tra cui l'unica donna, restano in orbita. L'inizio è quello di un romanzo di fantascienza classica, compreso il fatto che i due terrestri vengono prontamente catturati dai marziani. Se non che il 50% di questi marziani è umano e parla lingue terrestri dichiarate morte dal qualche secolo: greco antico e aramaico. L'altro 50% è costituito da alieni umanoidi. Ma la cosa più sconvolgente è che la religione dei marziani è l'ebraismo ortodosso, con l'unica variante che credono che il Messia sia venuto. Lo credono perché il Messia, che dichiara di essere sì figlio di Dio, ma solo adottivo, vive in mezzo a loro, in un globo sfolgorante che funge da sole in una delle loro caverne sotterranee, e di tanto in tanto scende tra i suoi seguaci, a dirimere questioni di normale e straordinaria amministrazione.
La rivelazione è talmente forte che i tre uomini terrestri decideranno di convertirsi, nonostante Orme sia battista, il suo vice ebreo e il terzo musulmano. La donna invece, atea, non regge allo stress e decide di suicidarsi, solo che su Marte non si muore...
Orme però, nonostante si sia convertito, è pieno di dubbi: quel Gesù che gli ha parlato, e che pare anche trovarlo molto simpatico, è il vero Gesù oppure l'Anticristo? Anche e soprattutto perché, nel frattempo, i marziani hanno deciso che è venuto il momento di far convertire la Terra.
Insolito romanzo si fantascienza teologica, che torna d'attualità in questo momento in cui pare che la gente sia dedita ai credi più strani e stravaganti, e in cui in nome di una religione o dell'altra si torna a morire.
E come sempre, Farmer si rivela un grande sociologo.

Modern Rituals

Dal tronco che raccoglie i miti antichi e li ripropone nel mondo moderno, fuoriesce un nuovo ramo, per la delizia di grandi e piccini. Antichi dei sanguinari sono tenuti prigionieri, e vengono periodicamente nutriti col sangue di uomini, catturati in momenti topici della loro esistenza (devono stare prendendo o salvando una vita) e lasciati in un ambiente artificiale, a fronteggiare fantasmi archetipici e le loro paure, fino a morirne. Ma un rituale non va come dovrebbe, anche e soprattutto perché questa volta il gruppo di persone catturate per il rituale non è quello che sembra.
L'inizio è un po' confuso, e l'argomento del romanzo non è tra i miei preferiti, ma dalla metà in avanti, quando si comincia a capire che l'umanità ha prodotto di peggio di qualche spettro arrabbiato, la lettura diventa davvero divertente.


From the trunk that collects ancient myths and plays them in the modern world, comes out a new branch, to the delight of young and old. Ancients and bloodthirsty Gods are being held, and are regularly fed with the blood of human being, caught in important moments of their existence (they must be taking or saving a life) and left in an artificial environment, to face archetypal ghosts and their fears, until die. But a ritual does not go as it should, not least because this time the group of captured people for the ritual is not what it seems.
The beginning is a bit 'confused, and the subject of the novel is not among my favorites, but from the middle forward, wen you begin to understand that humanity has produced worse than a few angry spectrum, the reading becomes really fun.

Sleeping Giants

Il giorno del suo compleanno una bambina, provando la bicicletta nuova, si addentra nel bosco e cade in una buca. Ad attenderla in fondo alla buca c'è una mano, una mano gigante fatta di un metallo sconosciuto e circondata di pannelli dello stesso materiale, coperti di simboli. Sarà il caso, sarà la predestinazione, questa stessa bambina, diversi anni dopo, si ritroverà a capo del progetto per mettere insieme e studiare il gigantesco robot alieno del quale la mano da lei casualmente trovata era solo il primo pezzo. Seguono vicende varie, complete di parecchie manipolazioni in classico stile complottista americano, fino a un finale aperto che fa pensare che, a breve, arriverà un seguito.
Detta così la trama ha un suo interesse, se non che è spezzettata in una serie di interviste ai vari protagonisti fatte da un misterioso personaggio che sembra quasi onnisciente e dotato di poteri fuori dall'ordinario, il quale viene a sua volta intervistato da un personaggio ancora più misterioso che rivela e non rivela di essere un discendente degli alieni che hanno lasciato il robot. Il continuo cambiamento di punto di vista alla lunga diventa pesante da sopportare, senza contare che questo fa spesso perdere la connessione tra gli eventi.
Molti avvenimenti non hanno spiegazione e di molti personaggi non è chiara la motivazione. Certo, come già detto, questo è di sicuro il primo libro di una saga, ma la mancanza di una vera conclusione degli eventi presenti, invece di stimolare la lettura dell'eventuale prossimo volume, rischia di innervosire il lettore.


The day of his birthday a little girl, trying the new bike, goes into the woods and falls into a pit. Waiting for her at the bottom of the hole there is a hand, a giant hand made of an unknown metal and surrounded by panels of the same material, covered with symbols. Will be the case, will be the predestination, this same child, several years later, he finds herself at the head of the project to bring together and study the giant alien robot whose hand she was just randomly found the first piece. Following various events, complete with several manipulations in classic American conspiracy style, up to an open ending which suggests that, in short, a follow will come.
That way the plot has its own interest, except that it is broken up into a series of interviews with various protagonists made by a mysterious character that seems almost omniscient and endowed with extraordinary powers, who is in his turn interviewed by a even more mysterious character who reveals and does not reveal to be a descendant of the aliens who have left the robot. The constant change of perspective in long run becomes heavy to bear, not to mention that this often miss the connection between events.
Many events have no explanation and of many characters the motivations aren't clear. Of course, as I said, this is certainly the first book of a saga, but the lack of a true conclusion of the events, instead of stimulating the reading of any next volume, is likely to irritate the reader.

A New Day in America

Lo sfondo assomiglia a quello di La strada, di Cormac McCarthy, ma per raggiungere il livello di disperazione di McCarthy occorre un coraggio fuori dall'ordinario, e quindi, nonostante la catastrofe nucleare, nonostante la malattia, nonostante una perversa setta religiosa, nonostante un nemico personale disposto a tutto per portargli via la sua unica ragione di vita, il protagonista di A new day in America, una specie di Rambo governato dall'istinto paterno invece che dalla sete di vendetta, riuscirà a portare a termine la sua missione e a salutarci mentre si imbarca per iniziare una nuova vita.
Piacevole e ben scritto, a tratti molto coinvolgente, e con alcuni personaggi, non necessariamente quelli in primo piano, decisamente interessanti.


The background resembles that of The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, but to achieve McCarthy's level of desperation one needs a courage out of the ordinary, and then, despite the nuclear catastrophe, despite the disease, despite a perverse religious sect, despite a personal enemy that will do everything to take away his only reason for living, the protagonist of A new day in America, a kind of Rambo ruled by paternal instinct rather than by a thirst for revenge, will be able to accomplish his mission and to say us goodbye as he embarks for a new life.
Pleasant and well written, sometimes very addictive, and with some characters, not necessarily those in the foreground, very interesting.

Crime Rave

Un meraviglioso miscuglio di fantascienza ucronica (apparente punto di divisione temporale il mancato suicidio di Marilyn Monroe), urban fantasy e crime, questo è uno dei libri più spassosi e fuori di testa che mi sia capitato di leggere da un po' di tempo a questa parte.
Dentro ci sono tutti gli stereotipi possibili e immaginabili, dal vampiro che beve sangue mestruale alla donna d'affari che tiene in mano il sindaco per i suoi segreti, ma ne nasconde di ancora più orrendi, dagli ibridi uomo-alieno, ai non morti, ai terroristi stile 11 settembre agli dei di secondo livello dediti a una sanguinolenta scalata al potere.
Ogni pagina è una sorpresa e, nonostante il livello di tensione e di efferatezza non cali mai, la storia è talmente grottesca e surreale che non si riesce a smettere di leggere.

A wonderful mixture of alternative history sciencefiction (apparent point of time division the failed suicide of Marilyn Monroe), urban fantasy and crime, this is one of the most amusing and freaked out books that I've ever read from a bit of time now.
Inside there are all imaginable stereotypes, from the vampire drinking menstrual blood to the business woman holding the mayor for his secrets in his hand, but that conceals even more horrendous ones, hybrid alien-human being, undead, from terrorists in the style of September 11 to second level gods dedicated to a bloody rise to power.
Each page is a surprise and despite the level of tension and cruelty never declines, the story is so grotesque and surreal that you can not stop reading.

The Park

Figlio più o meno legittimo di Hunger Games, di conseguenza nipote de La lunga marcia, presenta diversi punti di contatto col suo progenitore per quanto riguarda la psicologia dei protagonisti, mentre gli effetti speciali assomigliano a quelli del parente più prossimo.
Le motivazioni sono, come sempre in questi casi, sordide.
Avrei preferito che l'autore chiudesse meglio i fili della trama, perché, anche se è chiaro che questo romanzo è stato inteso per fondare una serie, il risultato sarebbe stato più godibile.

More or less legitimate son of Hunger Games, consequently grandson of The Long Walk, has several points of contact with its progenitor regarding the psychology of the characters, while the special effects resemble those of the next of kin.
The reasons are, as always in these cases, sordid.
I would have preferred that the author closed better the plot's threads, because even though it is clear that this novel was intended to establish a series, the result would have been more enjoyable.

The Case of the Toxic Spell Dump

Come sarebbe il mondo se, al posto di una rivoluzione industriale, ci fosse stata una rivoluzione magica, e con questa stravagante energia funzionasse il mondo? Naturalmente tutte le leggi dell'alchimia sarebbero valide, e tutti gli dei - e ribadisco tutti - esisterebbero con pari dignità. Questo è il mondo che ci racconta Turtledove in questo divertente romanzo, nel quale un impiegatuccio dell'EPA, Ente per la purezza dell'ambiente, che oltre alla sigla ha anche le funzioni, seppur in ambito magico, dell'Ente per la protezione dell'ambiente, si trova a indagare su quello che sembra un semplice caso di inquinamento magico ed è invece una lotta tra dei che potrebbe portare alla Terza Guerra Mondiale, magica naturalmente.
Nonostante qualche lungaggine di troppo in alcuni punti, davvero molto divertente.

Of course all the laws of alchemy would be valid, and all the gods - and I emphasize all - would exist on an equal footing. This is the world that Turtledove tells us in this fun novel, in which a low rank EPA clerk, Environmental Purity Agency, which in addition to the acronym also features, albeit in a magical context, the Environmental Protection Agency, is to investigate what seems like a simple case of magical pollution and is instead a battle between the gods that could lead to World War III, sorcerous of course.
Despite some slowness too much in some places, very funny.

Grotto of the Dancing Deer: And Other Stories

Dieci racconti scelti tra l'abbondantissima produzione di Simak. Dieci perle che, nonostante siano legate al passato, riescono a catturare completamente l'attenzione del lettore, sia per la scrittura potente sia per la perfetta definizione dei personaggi, cosa rara nella forma racconto.
A parte il racconto che dà il titolo alla raccolta, che affronta la diversità da un punto di vista prettamente psicologico, si tratta di storie di pura avventura, con un preciso schema western, divertentissime.


Ten stories chosen from the abundant production of Simak. Ten pearls, although they are linked to the past, are able to capture completely the reader's attention, both for the powerful writing andthe perfect definition of the characters, which is rare in the short stories narrative form.
Apart from the story that gives the title to the collection, which addresses diversity from a merely psychological point of view, they are stories of pure adventure with a definite western scheme, hilarious.

Quozl

L'invasione aliena al tempo dei talk show. I Quozl sono dei simpatici alieni, una via di mezzo tra un gatto e un coniglio, amanti dei piercing, dei colori sgargianti e della gioielleria, pacifici dopo aver sublimato e ritualizzato un passato sanguinoso. Arrivano sulla Terra scoprendo solo all'ultimo momento che si tratta di un pianeta abitato, motivo per il quale se ne restano nascosti in una località difficilmente raggiungibile per una cinquantina d'anni, mentre, per così dire si sistemano. Un giorno però accade l'inevitabile: un giovane Quozl e un giovane umano si incontrano e fanno amicizia, e da lì gli eventi precipitano in un crescendo di situazioni esilaranti, fino alla rivelazione finale.
Un'invasione aliena è pur sempre un'invasione aliena, o no?


The alien invasion at the time of the talk shows. The Quozl are cute aliens, a cross between a cat and a rabbit, lovers of piercing, the bright colors and jewelery, peaceful after a sublimated and ritualized bloody past. At their arrive on Earth, they discove only at the last moment that it is an inhabited planet, which is why they hidden in a place difficult to reach for some fifty years, while all will settle. But one day the inevitable happens: a young human and a young Quozl meet and make friends, and from there the events fall into a crescendo of hilarious situations, until the final revelation.
An alien invasion is still an alien invasion, or not?

Manufractured

Se tutto il libro avesse avuto il ritmo degli ultimi capitoli, il giudizio sarebbe stato migliore. Invece la maggior parte del testo è lento, pesante, confuso, sovrabbondante di dettagli tesi a farci conoscere i personaggi che dovranno accompagnarci anche nei volumi successivi - dettagli che avrebbero potuto senz'altro essere disseminati strada facendo - e invece parco di altre cose che secondo me sarebbero state indispensabili: qualche notizia sulla guerra civile che costituisce il passato recente nell'orizzonte degli eventi, per esempio, o sulla possibile forma di vita aliena che illumina il cielo di Vexton e che ha, a quanto pare, una qualche funzione salvifica.


If the whole book had had the pace of the last chapters, the judgment would have been better. Instead, most of the text is slow, heavy, confused, superabundant of details to make us know the characters who will accompany us also in subsequent volumes - details that could very well be scattered along the way - and frugal instead of other things that in my opinion would have been necessary: some news about the civil war that constitutes the recent past in the timeline, for example, or about the possible alien form of life that illuminates the sky abobe Vexton and that, apparently, has some salvific function.

Nirvana

L'estinzione delle api e il conseguente collasso della natura e della civiltà è un tema ampiamente trattato nella letteratura sci-fi (con l'aggravante della terrificante prospettiva di diventare realtà a breve), e le ragioni di questa estinzione anche. Il comportamento ossessivo-compulsivo delle grandi multinazionali e la loro trasformazione in pseudogoverni totalitari anche. Nemmeno l'uso ludico della realtà virtuale come nuovo oppio dei popoli è nuovo, e non è nemmeno la prima volta che un vero scienziato prende in mano la penna per descrivere in un romanzo tutto questo.
Mettiamoci anche che circa duemila anni fa qualcuno ha già giocato le sue carte mettendo sul piatto una gravidanza impossibile.
Nonostante questa poco incoraggiante premessa, il libro è ben scritto e si leggerebbe anche piuttosto volentieri se non fosse per la protagonista: Larissa è un essere umano di una noia mortale, assolutamente insopportabile, e che fa girare tutti i problemi del mondo intorno al proprio ombelico. Considerato che questo volume dovrebbe essere il primo di una serie, si spera che il suo carattere migliori col passare del tempo.
Edit: devo dire che ora Larissa ha il giusto carattere per la storia. Ho apprezzato anche le varie modifiche, perché ora la storia è davvero intrigante. Trovo ancora un piccolo problema: Larissa sembra avere 17 anni, così alcune cose sembrano del tutto impossibili (per esempio il fatto che Larissa frequenti l'università prima di Andrew, che ne ha 25, e così via).
Mi dispiace, ma essendo un editor sono particolarmente sensibile quando si tratta di incongruenze di questo tipo.



The extinction of bees and the consequent collapse of nature and civilization is a topic widely discussed in sci-fi literature (with the aggravating circumstance of the terrifying prospect to become soon reality), and also the reasons for this extinction. The obsessive-compulsive behavior of big corporations and their transformation into totalitarian pseudo-government too. Even the recreational use of virtual reality as a new opium of the people isn't new, and it's not the first time that a real scientist takes up the pen to describe all this in a novel.
Let's also say that about two thousand years ago someone has already played his cards putting up an impossible pregnancy.
Despite this less than encouraging introduction, the book is well written and would read even quite happily if it were not for the protagonist: Larissa is a human being so boring, absolutely unbearable, and that runs all the problems of the world around its own navel. Given that this book should be the first in a series, it is hoped that her character improves over time.
Edit: I must say that now Larissa has the right character for the story.
I also appreciated the various adjustment, because the story now is really breath-taking. However I find still a small problem: Larissa seems to be 17, so certaing things are quite impossible (for example Larissa can't be in University before Andrew, who is 25, and so on).
Sorry, but I'm an editor, so I'm particularly careful when it comes to inconsistencies of this type :-)

The Norma Gene

La clonazione è un giocattolo con il quale l'uomo cerca di gingillarsi da un po' di tempo, e ancora non sappiamo, almeno ufficialmente, se una clonazione umana sia mai avvenuta. Nel mondo descritto da Roufa invece il proposito è riuscito, al punto che è diventato di moda clonare personaggi famosi. Ci sono ovviamente personaggi famosi e personaggi famosi, al punto che, mentre Norma Janes alias Marylin Monroe è un clone popolare al punto che esistono gruppi di autoiaiuto per le donne nate con questo corpo, altri cloni sono vietati, come ad esempio quello di Hitler o di altri personaggi storici che nella loro versione originale hanno avuto potere. E come dice il romanzo "a dispetto del fatto che il clone di Hitler aveva solo fallito nel far rivivere il suo "potenziale", il suo senso di inferiorità e il suo meschino spirito di vendetta gli avevano impedito di salire oltre il grado di assistente manager da McDonald". Già, perché un clone è una mera copia fisica, non condivide né il carattere né alcuna memoria ancestrale con il suo originale. O no?
Libro originale e divertente, con caratteri ben descritti e situazioni esilaranti, anche se la parte relativa alle paranoiche ricostruzioni storiche di coloro che cercano di suscitare nel protagonista qualche memoria ancestrale, o il motivo per cui i suoi persecutori perdono interesse nei suoi confronti, sono un po' tirati per i capelli.


Cloning is a toy with which man tries to fiddle a bit from of time, and still do not know, at least officially, if a human cloning ever happened. Instead in the world described by Roufa the intention is successful, to the point that it has become fashionable to clone famous people. There are of course famous people and famous people, to the point that, while Norma Janes aka Marilyn Monroe is a popular clone to the point that there are self-help groups for women born with this body, other clones are prohibited, such as the onef Hitler or other historical figures that in their original version had power. And as the novel says "This despite the fact that the Hitler clone had not only failed to live up to his “potential,” his sense of inferiority and petty vindictiveness kept him from rising past assistant manager at McDonalds". Yes, because a clone is a merely physical copy, and shares neither the character nor any ancestral memory with its original. Or not?
Original and funny book, with well-described characters and hilarious situations, even if the part related to the paranoid historical reconstructions to try to stir up some ancestral memory in the protagonist,or why his persecutors lose interest in him, are a bit stretched.

L'eterna lotta tra il bene e il male, e la graziosa tradizione dei regali di San Nicola vista come un antico retaggio per salvare l'umanità dal più gigantesco malocchio mai visto.
Una storia strana, che pare bislacca a raccontarla, ma intrigante e divertente, con personaggi complessi e ben descritti e immersa in una realtà che, pur essendo quella immaginaria propria del romanzo fantastico, è così ben strutturata da permettere al lettore di immergersi completamente in essa.
Qualche lungaggine di troppo impedisce di assegnare al libro la votazione più alta.

The eternal struggle between good and evil, and the gracious tradition of the gifts of San Nicolaus seen as an ancient heritage to save humanity from the most gigantic course ever seen.
A strange story, which seems odd to tell, but intriguing and fun, with complex and well described characters, immersed in a reality that, despite being the one of a fictional fantasy novel, is so well structured to allow the reader to immerse themselves in it .
Some slowness make it impossible to assign to the book the highest mark.

The Galaxy Game

Indubbiamente un libro per giovani amanti dell'avventura e della fantascienza, e che contiene molta avventura e molta fantascienza, ma, purtroppo, anche molte incoerenze. I piedi con cui cammina sono fragili, troppe le cose lasciate all'immaginazione del lettore, soprattutto per quanto riguarda i rapporti interpersonali tra i protagonisti, col risultato che non è mai chiaro chi fa che cosa e perché.
Anche il costante cambio di punto di vista tra i due protagonisti principali, Rafi e Ntennman, è tutt'altro che armonico, senza contare che, del tutto improvvisamente, le due voci narranti scompaiono dalla circolazione e la conclusione è lasciata a due figure che fino a quel momento sono state del tutto secondarie.
Peccato, il materiale c'era, e la scrittura è abbastanza buona.




Undoubtedly a book for young people who love adventure and science fiction, which contains a lot of adventure and a lot of science fiction, but, unfortunately, too many inconsistencies. The foot with which the book walks are fragile, too many things left to the imagination of the reader, especially with regard to the relationships between the characters, with the result that it is never clear who does what and why.
Even the constant change of perspective between the two main protagonists, Rafi and Ntennman, is far from harmonious, not to mention that, quite suddenly, the two narrative voices vanish and the conclusion is left to two figures that until them were entirely secondary.
Too bad, there was material, and the writing is pretty good.

The Damned

Ho qualche difficoltà nello scrivere la recensione di questo libro, perché avrebbe tutti gli elementi per essere un'ottima lettura e invece l'autore ha sbagliato le proporzioni e il risultato è molto vicino al disastro. Associare gli orrori della Prima Guerra Mondiale e il conseguente massacro alla bestialità di orde di lupi mannari è secondo me un'idea geniale, ma mescolare a tutto questo la Chiesa Cattolica e una specie di Inquisizione segreta, fatta da uomini che hanno più dei pistoleri americani che degli uomini di chiesa, cosa alla quale ha aggiunto un numero eccessivo di flashback nel passato dell'Inquisitore Tacit e due storie d'amore l'una meno credibile dell'altra.
Peccato aver sprecato così delle ottime ricerche storiche e uno stile di scrittura non disprezzabile.


I have some difficulty in writing the review of this book, because it would have all the elements to be a good read, and instead the author get wrong with the proportions and the result is very close to a disaster. Associate the horrors of World War I and the subsequent massacre with the bestiality of werewolves' hordes is in my opinion a great idea, but mix all this with the Catholic Church and a kind of secret Inquisition, made by people who have more of the Americans gunmen that of men of church, something which the author added too many flashbacks in the past of Inquisitor Tacit, and two love stories, one less credible than the other.
Shame to have wasted so excellent historical research and writing style not despicable.

Dalla Terra allo spazio e ritorno, dal presente al futuro e ritorno, per quale altro scopo se non salvare l'umanità dai cattivissimi alieni? E se poi, in tutto questo, si conquista l'amore della propria vita e si diventa ultramiliardari, di che cosa lamentarsi? Libro a tratti divertente, soprattutto nella prima parte, nella quale il protagonista è un credibili studente universitario un po' sfigato, a tratti scontato e in altre parti un po' noioso, soprattutto a causa degli alieni cattivi, del tutto prevedibili.

From Earth to space and back, from the present to the future and back, for which purpose other than saving humanity from nasty aliens? And if, in all this, you conquer the love of your life and become ultra billionaires, what to complain? Book sometimes funny, especially in the first part, in which the protagonist is a credible university student a bit loser, sometimes obvious and in other parts a bit boring, mainly because of the alien bad guys, entirely predictable.

Ugla è una Candide islandese, una ragazza cresciuta a saghe e buon senso in una società che viene considerata arcaica ma è più aperta, nei costumi e nel pensiero, di quella ufficiale. Nell'Islanda del secondo dopoguerra, fiera della propria indipendenza così come piena di contraddizioni e preda di politici ingordi e senza scrupoli, Ugla dribbla con grazia tutte le trappole che in cui può cadere un'ingenua contadina (sì, ok, si troverà con una figlia illegittima, ma Ugla conosce il valore della vita e sa che è maggiore di quello delle convenzioni sociali), per diventare una persona, un essere responsabile di se stesso e del proprio destino, immagine di quelle che dovrebbe essere una nazione moderna.
Nonostante sia stato scritto nel 1948, il libro è freschissimo e pieno di umorismo, come solo uno scrittore davvero grande può produrre.


Ugla is an Icelandic Candide, a young girl raised with sagas and common sense in a society that is considered archaic but is more open, in costumes and in thought, of the official one. In Iceland after World War II, proud of its independence as well as full of contradictions and prey of greedy and unscrupulous politicians, Ugla dribble with grace all the traps in wich can fall a naive peasant (yes, ok, you she find herself with a illegitimate daughter, but Ugla knows the value of life and knows that is greater than that of social conventions), to become a person, to be responsible for herself and his own destiny, picture of what should be a modern nation.
Although it was written in 1948, the book is fresh and full of humor, as only a really great writer can produce.
