Uno sciagurato giorno Ian Rankin decise di mandare in pensione il suo ispettore Rebus, e di dare spazio a un nuovo detective. Dopo aver letto il primo libro della nuova serie, decisi che non ne valeva la pena e non ne lessi altri. Una delle cinque stelline che ho assegnato è quindi in segno di plauso per la decisione di Rankin di tornare suoi suoi passi e dare di nuovo a noi lettori la gioia di aver a che fare col suo scorbutico Rebus.
Due storie si intrecciano in questo romanzo, entrambe provenienti dal passato. Una è la "solita "storia: i criminali con i quali Rebus ha sempre avuto a che fare sono invecchiati con lui, ma non per questo sono diventati cittadini modello, e in qualche modo continuano a farsi la guerra, forse anche sotto forma di agguati da parte di un cecchino. Ma molte cose non tornano: che cosa accomuna un vecchio criminale con un avvocato all'apparenza al di sopra di ogni sospetto e con un assistente in un rifugio per minori diventato milionario con una vincita alla lotteria? E perché qualcuno ha ucciso il figlio di un boss con le stesse modalità usate dal cecchino? Qualcosa d'altro è in movimento, qualcosa che viene da un passato ancora più orribile della vecchia criminalità di Edimburgo e, mentre i suoi giovani colleghi dipaneranno la matassa criminale, solo l'acume e la testardaggine di Rebus potranno venire a capo dell'altra storia, quella sordida.
Un Rankin in grande spolvero, niente da dire, e la canzone che dà il titolo al romanzo è davvero inquietante.

A unfortunate day Ian Rankin decided to send his Inspector Rebus in retirement, and make room for a new detective. After reading the first book of the new series, I decided that it was not worth it and I do not read others. One of the five stars that I gave is therefore a sign of praise for the decision to Rankin to return on his steps and give back to us readers the joy of having to do with his grumpy Rebus.
Two stories intertwine in this novel, both from the past. One is the 'same' story: the criminals with whom Rebus has always had to do have grown old with him, but none have become model citizens, and somehow continue to make war, perhaps even in the form of ambushes by a sniper. But many things do not add up: what unites an old criminal with a lawyer seemingly above reproach and with an assistant in a shelter for minors became a millionaire with a lottery win? And why someone killed the son of a boss in the mood used by the sniper? Something else is moving, something that comes from an even more horrible past of the old crime of Edinburgh and, while his younger colleagues unravel criminal skein, only the acumen and the stubbornness of Rebus can get on top of the other story, the sordid one.
A Rankin at his best, nothing to say, and the song that gives title to the novel is really disturbing.

City of Buried Ghosts

La Catalogna non è la Spagna, sembrano spesso e volentieri riaffermare i protagonisti di questa intricata storia che affonda le sue radici nel passato. E' vero, ognuno conosce la storia, quella con la S maiuscola, che gli hanno raccontato, e molto spesso i ritrovamenti archeologici che invece raccontano qualcosa di diverso vengono taciuti, o addirittura distrutti. Ma non è questa la chiave che porterà alla soluzione del mistero, e non lo è nemmeno l'evidente avidità di alcuni dei protagonisti. A risolvere il mistero sarà una squadra di poliziotti feriti e scalcinati, comandati da una donna che non ha ancora fatto i conti con le perdite del suo passato, e forse proprio per questo capace di capire.
Nonostante sia inglese, la conoscenza che Chris Lloyd della Catalogna e dei suoi problemi col governo centrale spagnolo è profonda, e questo romanzo ha il merito, oltre a quello indubbio di essere un ottimo intrattenimento, di generare curiosità per una realtà poco conosciuta.


Catalonia is not Spain, very often they appear to reaffirm the protagonists of this intricate story that has its roots in the past. It's true, everyone knows the story, the one with a capital S, that they told us, and very often the archaeological findings that instead tell something different are silenced, or even destroyed. But this is not the key that will lead to the solution of the mystery, and neither is the obvious greed of some of the protagonists. To solve the mystery will be a team of injured and shabby police officers, commanded by a woman who has not yet come to terms with the losses of her past, and perhaps because of this is able to understand.
Despite being English, the knowledge that Chris Lloyd has of Catalonia and its problems with the Spanish central government is deep, and this novel has the advantage, in addition to be without doubt a great entertainment, to generate curiosity about a little-known reality.

The Cauliflower®

Alla fine dell'ottocento visse in India un santone, uno dei tanti, si potrebbe dire, che quella terra intrisa di misticismo sforna a profusione, se non che questo individuo, a differenza di quasi tutti gli altri, invece di trovare dio attraverso le scritture, lo andava cercando attraverso un rapporto personale, spesso apparendo, agli occhi delle persone normali, niente più che un pazzo furioso. Questo santo pazzo, o pazzo santo che dir si voglia, è tutt'ora conosciuto come Sri Ramakrishna, e questa è una specie di biografia non autorizzata e piuttosto divertente, che racconta la sua storia mettendola in alcuni punti a confronto con quella di Madre Teresa, anche se, secondo me Sri Ramakrishna assomiglia di più a San Francesco, sia dal punto di vista degli atteggiamenti poco ortodossi sia dal punto dei risultati nel campo della ricerca della fede.
La struttura del romanzo è piuttosto insolita, e questo a volte ne rende difficile la lettura, senza contare che nell'ultima parte viene dato eccessivo spazio dato alle lamentazioni di Hridayram, nipote e servitore un po' infedele del guru.


The late nineteenth century a holy man lived in India, one of many, you could say, that that land imbued of mysticism produces in abundance, if not this individual, unlike almost all the others, instead of finding God through scripture, was looking through a personal relationship, often appearing in the eyes of ordinary people, nothing more than a madman. This holy fool, or fool holy, if you prefer, is still known as Sri Ramakrishna, and this book is a kind of unauthorized and quite funny biography, that tells his story comparing it in some points with the one of Mother Teresa , although, in my opinion Sri Ramakrishna looks more like St. Francis, both from the point of view of the unorthodox attitudes both in terms of results in research of the faith.
The structure of the novel is quite unusual, and this sometimes makes it difficult to read, not to mention that in the last part too much space is given to the lamentations of Hridayram, niece and a little infidelservant of the guru.

Alice falling

Alice tradisce il marito. Alice va a letto con un uomo assai più giovane di lei, uno studente di filosofia che la ama citando Kirkegaard e vorrebbe addirittura che andasse a vivere con lui.
Alice è una donna ricca, moglie di un uomo potente. Forse si annoia, la sua vita di signora bene senza nulla da pensare se non a qualche party e a qualche vernissage, e senza nulla di cui preoccuparsi se non che le finanze del marito continuino a essere floride, la spinge a cercare avventure.
Ma, all’improvviso, al respiro lieve dell’amante addormentato, unico rumore nell’alcova dopo l’amplesso clandestino, si sostituisce il suono insistente di un clacson, seguito da insulti urlati: questo apre una piccola crepa dalla quale si può scorgere a quale vita cerca di sfuggire Alice rifugiandosi tra le braccia di un giovane e dolce amante, perché l’impaziente e maleducato autista, che non sopporta di stare nemmeno cinque minuti in coda dietro al camioncino del latte, è Paddy, il marito di Alice.
Oltre che impaziente e maleducato Paddy è un sadico, un violento e un manipolatore che riconosce le sue vittime con infallibile fiuto, un fiuto che gli permette di individuare le persone danneggiate dalla vita, soprattutto donne, e che Paddy sembra possedere da sempre.
Perché, prima di sposare Alice, Paddy era fidanzato con Sheila, la sua sorella maggiore, morta in un incidente, e le due sorelle hanno in comune lo stesso orribile segreto, quello di essere state violentate ancora bambine da un sacerdote, lo stesso.
Giovanissima e in cerca di riscatto, Alice, che pure non lo ama, si convince di aver attratto Paddy fino a farsi sposare perché lui la porti lontano da una vita di abusi, ma dopo anni di un matrimonio disastroso, fatto di sottomissione e violenza, arriva finalmente a capire che è stato invece Paddy a scegliere lei, a causa del suo “odore” di vittima, e a causa del segreto che la accomuna alla sorella.
Portano con sé il caratteristico odore delle vittime tutti coloro che ruotano intorno a Paddy.
Anche Nora, compagna di università di Sheila e Paddy, segretamente innamorata di lui, che gli si è offerta come consolatrice alla morte di Sheila, presa come amante e poi lasciata più e più volte, anche dopo il matrimonio con Alice, anche dopo che lei si è sposata con Mick e che, una volta messa definitivamente da parte, sprofonderà in una allucinata depressione, fino a suicidarsi con una overdose di farmaci.

Lo porta addosso anche Sandy, l’ultima amante di Paddy, che lui picchia selvaggiamente e che finirà con lo stuprare davanti ad Alice, scatenando gli eventi che porteranno alla sanguinosa conclusione del romanzo.

Wall costruisce i propri personaggi con acuta perizia psicologica, dal giovane studente di filosofia che con Alice scopre l’amore con intensità tale che, quando arriverà a credere che Alice è incapace di amare, penserà di abbandonare gli studi ritenendo che la filosofia senza una speranza d’amore sia del tutto inutile, fino a Mick Delany, marito di Nora e a sua volta vittima di Paddy, che, pur essendo un uomo tutto sommato buono, alla fine non riuscirà a eludere il richiamo dell’odore di vittima che Alice porta con sé.

La discesa agli inferi di Alice, il suo precipitare in una lucida follia che la fa a sua volta diventare una carnefice, il sempre più serrato monologo interiore che ricostruisce per il lettore la sua storia di bambina abusata, il continuo cercare di scrollarsi di dosso il ruolo di vittima per prendere in mano la propria vita ne fanno un personaggio difficile da dimenticare.

La seconda metà del romanzo può essere difficile da affrontare per i lettori più sensibili, a causa della crescita esponenziale della violenza, che tuttavia non è mai gratuita e la cui descrizione non è ingiustificata: solo attraverso di essa è infatti possibile comprendere il reale stato di disgregazione morale e psicologica dei personaggi.

A parte il giovane studente di filosofia, la cui purezza però si guasta col crescere del suo disperato amore per Alice, esiste un solo personaggio positivo in tutto il romanzo, ed è Billy, il proprietario della galleria d’arte intorno alla quale si svolge una parte degli eventi.

Billy, che si occupa con grande affetto di Sandy quando per la prima volta la violenza di Paddy eccede quella tollerabile in un rapporto sado-masochistico, è omosessuale.

Di lui Sandy dice ad Alice che le piacerebbe che invece fosse eterosessuale; Alice risponde: “He’d be the only straight man in Ireland if he was”.

Il gioco di parole, di difficile traduzione in italiano, sta a significare che Billy è l’unico uomo retto nella vita delle due donne (straight è parola gergale per eterosessuale, ma significa dritto, retto).

La scrittura di Wall è tersa, a tratti poetica, e le sue descrizioni di personaggi e ambienti hanno una qualità pittorica; a tratti, però, i cambiamenti di scena e di attori, nonostante siano giustificati dalla sempre maggiore sovrapposizione -nella mente di Alice- tra Padre Bennis, il sacerdote che l’ha violentata da bambina, e Paddy, sono un po’ bruschi, e questo può spiazzare il lettore.

Nonostante ciò, è un romanzo che vale davvero la pena leggere.

Snow Beach

Dopo la rottura della sua ultraventennale relazione con una famosa chirurgo plastico, Aimee si ritrova priva di soldi e di autostima. Grazie ai buoni servigi di un amico avvocato torna da Londra alle Mauritius, suo luogo natale, con l'incarico di fare da coordinatrice e mediatrice per il gruppo che sta realizzando un parco dei divertimenti a base di neve proprio sulla spiaggia vicina alla proprietà dalla quale, a seguito di avvenimenti non molto chiari, Aimee ha dovuto andarsene ancora bambina.
Mentre cerca di tenere dritto il timone del progetto, che veleggia in acque burrascose a causa della scarsa propensione alla fedeltà del suo capo, Aimee approfitta per indagare sui passati avvenimenti che l'hanno catapultata dalle Mauritius a Londra.
Verrà alla fine a capo di tutto, e troverà un nuovo, appagante amore.
Abbastanza piacevole e abbastanza ben scritto, non riesce però a essere più che grazioso, a causa di qualche lungaggine e qualche punto irrisolto di troppo.



After the breaking of her twenty years plus relationship with a famous plastic surgeon woman, Aimee finds herself without money and self-esteem. Thanks to the good offices of a friend lawyer she returns from London to Mauritius, her birthplace, with a mandate to act as coordinator and mediator for the group which is building an amusement park based on snow on the beach in the nearby to the property from which, as result of events not very clear, Aimee had to leave as a child.
While looking for straighten the helm of the project, which is sailing in stormy waters due to the reluctance to fidelity of its boss, Aimee take the opportunity to investigate on past events that have catapulted her from Mauritius to London.
She will eventually be in charge of everything, and find a new, fulfilling love.
Pleasant enough, well-written enough, however, fails to be more than gracious, because of some slowness and some unresolved point too.

The Summer of Secrets

In una magica estate inglese del nostro passato hippy, in un qualche momento dopo l'Isola di Wight, due ragazzine si incontrano. Una proviene da una famiglia artistica e alternativa, dove la madre è bellissima, ma completamente fuori di testa e il padre esiste solo in narrazioni epiche, l'altra invece da una famiglia proletaria apparentemente normale, ma che alberga il mistero di un padre interamente dedito a una barca mai varata e di una madre che un bel giorno se n'è andata.
Da quell'estate, conclusasi con un dramma di cui si sa pochissimo, sono passati vent'anni. Le due ragazzine di allora si rincontrano, cercando di riconciliarsi col passato e con le strategie che hanno dovuto mettere in atto per sopravvivere a quel passato.


In a magical British summer of our hippy past, at some time after the Isle of Wight, two girls meet. One comes from an artistic and unconventional family , where the mother is beautiful, but completely out of your mind and the father exists only in epic narratives, whereas the other comes from a seemingly ordinary working-class family, but that harbour the mystery of a father that is addicted to a boat never launched and a mother that one day simply lefts.
Since that summer, which ended with a drama of which very little is known, twenty years have passed. The two girls then meet again, trying to reconcile with the past and the strategies that they had to put in place to survive the past.

Death in Profile

Qual è il confine tra il giallo classico di stampo vittoriano, alla Agatha Christie per intenderci, e il thriller moderno? Ecco, questo libro è stato scritto proprio per spingere il lettore all'esplorazione di questo confine. Ci sono tutti gli elementi del thriller moderno, dal serial killer al poliziotto a suo modo infedele, così come quelli del giallo classico, compresa la ricerca della verità in situazioni che esulano dal classico ambiente poliziesco e hanno più a che fare con l'ora del tè.
Si tratta quindi di un libro originale, la cui soluzione arriva, nonostante qualche sospetto, quasi del tutto inaspettata, anche se la parte nella quale i protagonisti, per mettere a proprio agio il profiler dilettante da loro incaricato di descrivere la personalità del serial killer, vestono e agiscono come i personaggi di un giallo della Golden Age, è un po' tirata per i capelli.

That is, this book was written precisely to encourage the reader to explore this boundary. Here are all the elements of the modern thriller, from the serial killers to the police officer in his trespass, as well as those of the classic detective fiction, including the search for truth in situations that are beyond the classic detective environment and have more to do with teatime.

Edwin ha trent'anni e restaura libri, sia per lavoro che per passione. Da due anni a questa parte la sua vita si trascina, priva di significato dopo che Marius, l'amore della sua vita lo ha lasciato. Non sembra esserci fine a questa situazione, finché un giorno arriva la tanto temuta alluvione e, assieme a essa Adam.
Piccolo libro delizioso, nel quale persino i difetti di pronuncia del protagonista si trasformano in gioco amoroso.


Edwin is thirty years old and restores books, both for work and for passion. For two years now, his life drags on, meaningless after Marius, the love of his life, left him. There seems no end to this situation, until one day comes the dreaded flood and, along with it Adam.
Delightful little book, in which even the speech defects of the main character turn into love play.

13 Days of Midnight

Nonostante la storia sia interessante e i personaggi ben descritti, questo libro è illeggibile, e questo a causa della sciagurata scelta fatta dall'autore di simulare, in un libro scritto interamente in prima persona, il modo di parlare di un ragazzino che ha problemi di linguaggio. Questo è piuttosto antipatico per un lettore adulto, e assolutamente diseducativo per i ragazzi, vale a dire la categoria di lettori ai quali questo romanzo è destinato.


Although the story is interesting and the characters well described, this book is unreadable, and this because of the author's unfortunate choice to simulate, in a book written entirely in the first person, the talk of a kid who has speech problems . This is quite unpleasant for an adult reader, and absolutely educationally harmful for the children, who are the intended category of readers for this book.

A Death in Sweden

Nord della Svezia, un bus ha un incidente con un camion carico di tronchi, tutti i passeggeri muoiono, tranne una ragazza, salvata miracolosamente da un altro passeggero, che la getta letteralmente dal bus un attimo prima dell'impatto, perdendo la sua vita per salvare quella di lei.
Sotto tutti i punti di vista un atto di eroismo, eppure in tutto questo c'è qualcosa di strano, perché la morte dell'uomo mette in moto strani avvenimenti che hanno a che fare col non essere lui chi diceva di essere. Qualche centinaio di pagine e diversi morti dopo, la storia torna nel nord della Svezia, dando un senso preciso a quell'atto di eroismo.
Nonostante alcuni caratteri siano stereotipati, e il numero di morti, ammazzati oltretutto con una certa facilità, decisamente alto, si tratta di un'ottima opera di intrattenimento, decisamente ben scritta.


Northern Sweden, a bus has an accident with a truck load of logs, all the passengers but one girl die, miraculously saved by another passenger, who literally throws her out of the bus the instant before theimpact, losing his life to save hers.
From all points of view, an act of heroism, but in all this there is something strange, because the man's death sets in motion strange events that have to do with him not being who he said. A few hundred pages and several deaths later, the story returns in northern Sweden, giving a precise meaning to that act of heroism.
Although some characters are stereotyped, and the very high number of dead, moreover killed with some ease, this is a great work of entertainment, very well written.

Mrs Hudson and the Malabar Rose

Ultimamente il personaggio di Sherlok Holmes è tornato di gran moda, e non si contano i film più o meno ispirati ai libri originali di Conan Doyle, né gli apocrifi, sia cinematografici che letterari. In questo filone si inserisce questo corposo romanzo per giovani adulti, abbastanza divertente anche per lettori più scafati, nel quale Scherlok Holmes viene nettamente surclassato dalla sua governante, la poderosa Mrs. Hudson, maestra della cucina come del pensiero logico, e decisamente propensa all'uso di metodi non convenzionali per venire a capo dei problemi.

Lately the character of Sherlock Holmes is back in fashion, and it is impossible to count the films more or less inspired by the original books by Conan Doyle, nor the apocryphal, both cinematographic and literary. In this line fits this substantial novel for young adults, funny enough even for more seasoned readers, in which Scherlok Holmes is clearly outclassed by his housekeeper, the mighty Mrs. Hudson, mistress both of the kitchen and the logical thinking, and very prone to the use of unconventional methods to get on top of problems.

The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra

Un ispettore di polizia in pensione, la di lui moglie e un giovanissimo elefante alle prese con un omicidio in una Mumbai coloratissima e tentacolare, in un libro che è sì un thriller, ma colorato come la città che gli fa da sfondo e scritto in modo fresco e persin umoristico.


A retired police inspector, his wife and a young elephant facing a murder in a colorful and sprawling Mumbai, in a book that is a thriller, yes, but colorful as the city that is its background, fresh and even humorously written.

A Banquet of Consequences

Caroline Goldacre è una persona estremamente antipatica. Bugiarda, manipolatrice, pigra e megalomane, è quanto di peggio si possa immaginare come amica, moglie, madre, collaboratrice, e non si capisce come mai Claire Abbot, famosa scrittrice femminista, se la tenga accanto come assistente, e cerchi addirittura di compiacerla, nonostante i rapporti tra le due non siano dei più pacifici. Così quando Claire viene trovata morta nella sua camera d'albergo per quello che sembra un attacco cardiaco e si rivela invece essere un avvelenamento, tutti i sospetti si puntano su Claire, senza che però ci sia un solo indizio della sua colpevolezza. Sarà compito di Barbara Havers, più in disgrazia del solito presso New Scotland Yard, cercare di dipanare la matassa e ottenere una confessione credibile da una bugiarda patologica. Elisabeth George non fallisce il compito di tenere il lettore incollato alla pagina, con questa storia piena di colpi di scena e costruita su personaggi perfettamente descritti. Devo aggiungere che questo è il primo libro della Geoge che leggo in lingua originale, e devo aggiungere a tutto il resto il piacere di un'ottima scrittura.


Caroline Goldacre is an extremely unpleasant person. Liar, manipulative, lazy and megalomaniac, she is the worst individual you can imagine as a friend, wife, mother, co-worker, and it is unclear why Claire Abbot, renowned feminist writer, has her as an assistant, and even try to please her, although relations between the two are not the most peaceful. So when Claire is found dead in his hotel room for what looks like a heart attack and reveals itself to be a poisoning, all suspicions aim at Claire, without, however, there is any indication of her guilt. It will be up to Barbara Havers, more out of favor than usual at New Scotland Yard, try to unravel the tangle and get a credible confession from a pathological liar. Elisabeth George does not fail the task of keeping the reader glued to the page, with this story full of twists and built on characters perfectly described. I must add that this is the first book of Geoge I read in the original language, and I have to add to everything else the pleasure of good writing.

Dark of Night

Ruins

Difficile dare un giudizio a questo libro. Innanzi tutto non ho letto il primo volume, e questo pregiudica notevolmente la comprensione degli eventi, in più è chiaramente mirato a una fascia di età che non è la mia, e, ultimo ma non meno importante, la scrittura è piuttosto noiosa.

Difficult to judge this book. First of all I have not read the first volume, and this is particularly harmful to the understanding of events, plus, it is clearly aimed at an age group that is not mine, and, last but not least, the writing is rather dull.

Into the Night

Bene, Amsterdam è la capitale occidentale dell'omicidio, cosa della quale forse sarebbe il caso di avvisare i telegiornali italiani, i quali cercano di far credere al popolo bue di vivere in un mattatoio pur di tenerli davanti al teleschermo e non in giro a far le pulci ai politici. Ma questa è una recensione e non un pezzo politico, e quindi parliamo del libro. La trama è molto complicata, e i personaggi hanno troppi, davvero troppi scheletri nell'armadio. Diciamo che se ne avessero la metà già ne avrebbero molti. L'ispettore Jaap è un sacco alternativo, al punto da essere stato per un certo periodo un monaco zen in Giappone. Questo probabilmente ha senso per chi ha letto il libro che precede questo ma, essendo la storia scritta per essere uno "stand alone" anche se con gli stessi protagonisti, il continuo tornare di Jaap a quel periodo della sua vita è un po' noioso.
Detto questo, e fatta salva la quantità industriale di refusi che ho incontrato nel testo, una volta dipanata un po' la trama il libro scorre via piuttosto bene, soprattutto nella seconda parte.

Well, Amsterdam is the western capital of murder, something which perhaps would be appropriate to alert the Italian news programs, which seek to persuade the people they live in a slaughterhouse in order to keep them in front of the television screen and not around nitpickings politicians. But this is a review and not a political piece, and then we talk about the book. The plot is very complicated, and the characters have too many, far too many skeletons in the closet. As to say that if they had half of it it would be already many. Inspector Jaap is very unconventional, to the point that he was for a whyle a zen munk in Japan. This probably makes sense for those who have read the book before this, but since the storyis written to be a "stand alone", although with the same characters, the costant return of Jaap to that period of his life is a bit boring.
That said, and without prejudice to the industrial quantities of typos that I encountered in the text, once unraveled a bit the plot of the book, it runs off quite well, especially in the second half.

Ho qualche difficoltà nello scrivere la recensione di questo libro, perché avrebbe tutti gli elementi per essere un'ottima lettura e invece l'autore ha sbagliato le proporzioni e il risultato è molto vicino al disastro. Associare gli orrori della Prima Guerra Mondiale e il conseguente massacro alla bestialità di orde di lupi mannari è secondo me un'idea geniale, ma mescolare a tutto questo la Chiesa Cattolica e una specie di Inquisizione segreta, fatta da uomini che hanno più dei pistoleri americani che degli uomini di chiesa, cosa alla quale ha aggiunto un numero eccessivo di flashback nel passato dell'Inquisitore Tacit e due storie d'amore l'una meno credibile dell'altra.
Peccato aver sprecato così delle ottime ricerche storiche e uno stile di scrittura non disprezzabile.


I have some difficulty in writing the review of this book, because it would have all the elements to be a good read, and instead the author get wrong with the proportions and the result is very close to a disaster. Associate the horrors of World War I and the subsequent massacre with the bestiality of werewolves' hordes is in my opinion a great idea, but mix all this with the Catholic Church and a kind of secret Inquisition, made by people who have more of the Americans gunmen that of men of church, something which the author added too many flashbacks in the past of Inquisitor Tacit, and two love stories, one less credible than the other.
Shame to have wasted so excellent historical research and writing style not despicable.

Racconti divertenti, magici, poetici, di un mondo che è dietro l'angolo eppure non conosciamo. Storie che vengono dal profondo della storia e che sembrano modernissime, e altre che paiono prese da antichi miti e invece narrano eventi avvenuti pochi anni fa, il tutto con il fraseggiare ipnotico del cantastorie di paese, quello abituato a narrare ai frequentatori semiubriachi di un'osteria storie delle quali loro stessi sono protagonisti senza che si riconoscano.
Ovviamente non tutti i racconti hanno la stessa qualità, e in alcuni il tratto relativo alla narrazione orale è un po' esagerato, ma lo stesso questo libro è una lettura piacevolissima.


Funny, magic and poetic stories, a world that is around the corner and yet we do not know. Stories that come from the depths of history and that seem very modern, and others that seem taken from ancient myths and instead narrate events that occurred a few years ago, all with the hypnotic phrasing of the storyteller of the village, the one used to narrate to the half drunk regulars of a tavern stories of which they themselves are protagonists without they are able to recognize.
Obviously not all the stories have the same quality, and in some the stretch on the oral narration is a bit too much, but this book is all the same a delightful reading.

A un uomo viene diagnosticato un aggressivo tumore al cervello che gli dà poche settimane di vita, e quindi, come molti farebbero nella sua stessa situazione, decide di mettere a posto alcune pendenze del passato. Queste sono le basi da cui parte questo thriller interessante e abbastanza intricato, che vede il protagonista passare più volte da vittima a carnefice mentre cerca disperatamente di chiarire il destino di una compagna di scuola, l'unica che gli abbia mostrato pietà quando era vittima di bullismo, prima che la malattia lo uccida.
Libro piacevole, ben scritto, e pieno di colpi di scena, solo qualche scena poco realistica impedisce di alzare il punteggio.


A man is diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor that gives him few weeks of life, and then, as many would do in the same situation, he decided to put in place some slopes of the past. This is the foundation from which this interesting and quite intricate thriller starts, which sees the protagonist to pass several times from victim to perpetrator while desperately trying to clarify the fate of a school girl friend, the only one who showed him mercy when he was the victim of bullying, before the disease kills him.
Pleasant book, well written, and full of surprises, just a few unrealistic scenes prevents in turning up the score.

Una serie di racconti e un breve romanzo, tutti aventi come protagonista il capitano pirata Marta Ramos con la sua ciurma, i suoi nemici e i suoi amici, e ambientata nel curioso simil futuro (o simil passato?) tutto vapore e ottone che costituisce lo sfondo delle avventure di genere steampunk. Un libro per così dire per ragazzi, ma assai divertente anche per noi cosiddetti adulti, con personaggi sempre un po' sopra la righe e che rispetta tutte le regole di un genere che di regole ne ha davvero poche.
Trattandosi si una raccolta, una certa disomogeneità nella qualità dei suoi componenti impedisce di dare una votazione maggiore.


A series of short stories and a novel, all with Captain of pirates Marta Ramos as a star, with her crew, her enemies and her friends, and set in the curious future-like (or past-like?) made of steam and brass that forms the background the adventures of steampunk genre. A book, so to speak, for children, but also very fun for us so-called adults, with characters always a little over the lines and that respects all the rules of a genre that has very few rules.
Since this is a collection, some unevenness in the quality of its components prevents from giving a higher vote.
