Ambientato tra i vigneti del Beaujolais, questo giallo è fresco come un Beaujolais Noveau e altrettanto inconsistente. Ben due morti e un grave incidente doloso costellano la trama, drammi la cui soluzione richiede giusto un paio di minuti alla simpatica coppia di enologi che fungono da investigatori dilettanti.
Detto questo, è un libro perfetto per rallegrare un pomeriggio uggioso e togliersi dalla testa le troppe complicazioni della vita, senza contare che la traduzione inglese è molto ben fatta, come sempre per i libri di questo editore.



Set among the vineyards of Beaujolais, this mistery is as fresh as a Beaujolais Nouveau and equally inconsistent. Two deads and a maliciuos accident sprinkle the plot, dramas whose solution requires just a couple of minutes to the nice couple of winemakers which act as amateur detectives.
That said, this is the perfect book to cheer up a dull afternoon and clear off the mind from the many complications of life, not to mention that the English translation is very well done, as always for books by this publisher.

Per quanto, in linea di principio, mi piaccia la prosa di Maurensig, non sono riuscita a godere appieno di questo libro, forse perché l'autore non è riuscito del tutto a conciliare la sua vena di scrittore un po' "retrò", con stilemi linguistici che possono a volte sembrare ottocenteschi, con il desiderio di fare di questo libro una specie di noir. Il risultato è a volte un po' confuso, e, soprattutto, non si capisce bene che cosa, nella storia narrata, abbia spinto Maurensig a narrarla.
Il capitolo finale è forse la parte migliore di tutto il testo.

I protagonisti di questi racconti vivono l'inferno. Un inferno di incomprensione e di estrema povertà. Non un raggio di luce rischiara le loro vite, non la più piccola speranza. Sembrano essere ambientati in tempi lontanissimi, quando il fato era un dio temibile e potente, e invece sono ambientati nella Grecia di oggi, quella dei tempi della crisi.
Unico neo: sono tanti, troppi. A un certo punto il lettore cede di schianto sotto tanta disperazione.


The protagonists of these stories are living the hell. A hell of misunderstanding and extreme poverty. Not a ray of light illuminating their lives, not the smallest hope. These stories seem to be set in ancient times, when fate was a fearsome and powerful god, and instead are set in today Greece, the one of the times of the crisis.
The only drawback: there are many, too many. At one point the reader gives a crash under such despair.

Manufractured

Se tutto il libro avesse avuto il ritmo degli ultimi capitoli, il giudizio sarebbe stato migliore. Invece la maggior parte del testo è lento, pesante, confuso, sovrabbondante di dettagli tesi a farci conoscere i personaggi che dovranno accompagnarci anche nei volumi successivi - dettagli che avrebbero potuto senz'altro essere disseminati strada facendo - e invece parco di altre cose che secondo me sarebbero state indispensabili: qualche notizia sulla guerra civile che costituisce il passato recente nell'orizzonte degli eventi, per esempio, o sulla possibile forma di vita aliena che illumina il cielo di Vexton e che ha, a quanto pare, una qualche funzione salvifica.


If the whole book had had the pace of the last chapters, the judgment would have been better. Instead, most of the text is slow, heavy, confused, superabundant of details to make us know the characters who will accompany us also in subsequent volumes - details that could very well be scattered along the way - and frugal instead of other things that in my opinion would have been necessary: some news about the civil war that constitutes the recent past in the timeline, for example, or about the possible alien form of life that illuminates the sky abobe Vexton and that, apparently, has some salvific function.

Un ispettore di polizia in pensione, la di lui moglie e un giovanissimo elefante alle prese con un omicidio in una Mumbai coloratissima e tentacolare, in un libro che è sì un thriller, ma colorato come la città che gli fa da sfondo e scritto in modo fresco e persin umoristico.


A retired police inspector, his wife and a young elephant facing a murder in a colorful and sprawling Mumbai, in a book that is a thriller, yes, but colorful as the city that is its background, fresh and even humorously written.

Una giovane donna che, ancora adolescente, è riuscita a sfuggire a un pericoloso serial killer, decide di dedicare la propria vita alla ricerca di un possibile metodo per l'identificazione delle sociopatie, in modo da evitare che altri abbiano la vita rovinata come l'ha avuta lei. Allo scopo riesce a far costruire un carcere di massima sicurezza in Alaska, nel quale custodire e studiare i peggiori soggetti del genere che le interessa. Deve però fare i conti con due avvenimenti del tutto inaspettati: l'inaspettata ricomparsa del suo persecutore e, ancora più inaspettata, la nascita dell'amore.
Non un capolavoro, ma ugualmente un libro interessante e moderatamente divertente, che avrebbe tratto grande vantaggio dall'uso di un numero minore di stereotipi tipici del genere.


A young woman, still a teenager, managed to escape a dangerous serial killer, and decide to dedicate her life to finding a possible method for identifying antisocial, in order to prevent others to have their lives ruined as the she had her. For this she manage to build a maximum security prison in Alaska, in which watch over and study the worst subjects in the genre that interests her. She must, however, deal with two completely unexpected events: the unexpected reappearance of her persecutor, and, even more unexpected, the birth of love.
Not a masterpiece, but also a good book and mildly entertaining, which would have drawn great benefit from the use of fewer stereotypes typical of the genre.

The Sleeper

Sono un'avida lettrice di tutto ciò che è stato scritto in merito ai tragici eventi della seconda guerra mondiale e al nazismo. Mi duole quindi dover dire che ho trovato questo romanzo inferiore a qualsiasi mia aspettativa, con una trama confusa, un eccesso di personaggi e una scrittura particolarmente noiosa.
Peccato, perché l'idea di fondo era assai buona.



I am an avid reader of everything that was written about the tragic events of World War II and Nazism. So I regret to say that I found this novel lower than any of my expectations, with a confusing plot, too many characters and an especially tedious writing .
Too bad, because the idea was very good.
