My rating: 2/5
A mess – beautifully written, but still a mess.
The novel is supposed to be about the lives of farmers and shepherds in the vast expanses of Germany, between one major city and the next. Above all, it’s about the younger generation – those who will inherit the land and the work from their parents and grandparents, but who are still too young to make their voices heard.
On top of this, the young protagonist finds himself having to deal with his father’s illness (a plot thread thrown in there, but never followed up on and with no real consequences), his grandmother’s dementia (another thread barely explored, apart from suggesting that the boy fears he might suffer from it himself), a film crew who have arrived to shoot a documentary (this too is of little consequence, apart from causing some initial unease), and the wolf, which sparks a debate among the various parties involved and which, in a sense, symbolises the Nazi past from which many seem not to have fully distanced themselves.
To round off this mishmash, a fantastical element enters the picture: a creature that only the young man can see and which perhaps – and I say perhaps – represents nature. There are no real events in this novel, only a few promises, never kept, and in the end, once the book is closed, all that remains is the feeling of having witnessed a splendid linguistic exercise, entirely devoid of soul.
