Sacred Mountain

Sacred Mountain Robert Ferguson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Three main strands combine in this book: the torment of a young British officer survived at the war in Burma and at the torture practiced by the Japanese who have caught him, the conquest of Everest and an unusual love story. As glue the abduction, by the Chinese Communists, of an important Lama in order to undermine the theocracy that governs Tibet. A series of twists and turns, friendships and betrayals, and unexpected meetings, makes very pleasant the reading this long novel.

Crimes of the Levee

Crimes of the Levee John Sturgeon
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A very American noir, set in a Chicago home of vice and crime, with a detective who has a bitter life and and a shameful father, who works at a police station where they just try to stop him from reaching the truth. So, even though his cases are always on the verge of ending up in nothing, he continues undaunted, regardless of the violence that broke out around him, to find the real culprit, even if that the offender would seem to be just his father.
The book is beautiful and compelling, the three starlets are only due to the fact that would have required a more careful editing work on the plot, which sometimes frays a bit'.

Marta Oulie: A Novel of Betrayal

Marta Oulie: A Novel of BetrayalSigrid Undset
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Titolo originale Fru Marta Oulie - 1097

Marta is like a modern Bovary, although, unlike the original one, she is cultured and spiritual, and her betrayal is caused more by the struggle between the sexes, that in the Scandinavian countries dates from the beginning of the century, rather than an aesthetic kind of boredom.
Being mainly a spiritual creature, after the betrayal and with the complicity of the illness of her husband, Martha gets off all the steps of remorse until a redemption, consisting of the awareness that it is possible to live as a liberated woman, without a man by her side.
First work of a woman who will win the Nobel Prize, while showing the limits of the extreme youth and the immature style of the author, has a tremendous power of language and an equally great capacity to enter deeply into the characters.
The English translation transmits perfectly the original language .

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie SocietyMary Ann Shaffer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The beginning of this book is a bit puzzling. The star seemed a bit frivolous for my taste, and I could not get into the spirit of the story, because fragmented by the different points of view of the epistolary form.
That all changed when the main character moves to Guernsey to know his correspondents and gather first-hand material for the writing of fer novel. From that point on the story, even if it continues to be formed by exchange of letters, takes a pyrotechnic rhythm, and the characters come out in the round from the page with their personalities, their extravagances, the suffering of a military occupation lasted five years during which they have not received any news from the outside and their faith in the future.
On all stands Elisabeth, the absent soul of the Literary Society, a solar and heroic woman as it can be only people who think of others first that to themselves.
Rounding out the novel doesn't lack the romantic end.

The Devil in the Corner

The Devil in the CornerPatricia Elliott
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The heroine of this novel, Maud, in the beginning seems taken from an Austen's novel, or to be the younger sister of Jane Eire: a poor orphan cheated out of his inheritance to which it is granted a roof by the one who has benefited of what should have been hers, and only because this person needs a nurse that is linked by need and therefore disposed to endure the whims of a not growen up little girl. A bit ' sickly, except that quickly things change: firstly, our young and candide heroine has a strong addiction to laudanum (opium ) and this causes her a certain split personality and a tendency to visions, then the bad character of her cousin/boss has resulted in a tangle of hatreds between the staff of her home and the people of the country as to foresee a catastroph, and finally he's there, John , beautiful and pure as only a hero ready to wreak havoc with the hearts of innocent girls can be. Obviously we will have a bit ' deads and a lively final with a surprise. And the happy ending? Who knows.
Classified as a children's book, instead is a good novel for their mothers, provided they are sufficiently romantic and willing to let theirself be carried elsewhere.
The writing is simple without being trivial, really very nice .

Il cacciatore di teste

Il cacciatore di testeJo Nesbø
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
