L'inizio di questo libro mi ha un po' sconcertato. La protagonista mi sembrava un po' frivola per i miei gusti, e non riuscivo a entrare nello spirito del racconto, anche perché frammentato dai diversi punti di vista della forma epistolare.
Tutto è cambiato nel momento in cui la protagonista si trasferisce a Guernsey per conoscere i suoi corrispondenti e raccogliere materiale di prima mano per la stesura del suo romanzo. Da quel momento in avanti il racconto, anche se continua a essere formato da scambi epistolari, prende un ritmo pirotecnico, e i personaggi escono a tutto tondo dalla pagina coi loro caratteri, le loro stravaganze, la sofferenza di una occupazione militare durata cinque anni durante i quali non hanno ricevuto alcuna notizia dall'esterno e la loro fede nel futuro.
Su tutti spicca Elisabeth, l'assente anima della Società Letteraria, una donna solare ed eroica come lo possono essere solo le persone che pensano prima agli altri che a se stesse.
A completare il romanzo non manca il finale romantico.

The beginning of this book is a bit puzzling. The star seemed a bit frivolous for my taste, and I could not get into the spirit of the story, because fragmented by the different points of view of the epistolary form.
That all changed when the main character moves to Guernsey to know his correspondents and gather first-hand material for the writing of fer novel. From that point on the story, even if it continues to be formed by exchange of letters, takes a pyrotechnic rhythm, and the characters come out in the round from the page with their personalities, their extravagances, the suffering of a military occupation lasted five years during which they have not received any news from the outside and their faith in the future.
On all stands Elisabeth, the absent soul of the Literary Society, a solar and heroic woman as it can be only people who think of others first that to themselves.
Rounding out the novel doesn't lack the romantic end.
