Un evento terribile accade a Londra e una docente di psichiatria ormai prossima alla pensione se ne interessa in modo particolare. Da qui parte una storia complessa, a tratti disturbante, raccontata a più voci dai protagonisti degli eventi, che passano da un caso particolarmente orribile di maltrattamento infantile a un altro caso, particolarmente fastidioso, di bullismo sul luogo di lavoro.
E' soprattutto attraverso la voce di Anne, giovane dottoressa in un mondo di psichiatria universitaria americana carico di testosterone, che veniamo a conoscenza dei tragici avvenimenti del passato, e di come il fato dei due bambini maltrattati dalla famiglia sia stato segnato inesorabilmente dall'incapacità maschile di fare le giuste domande e dal desiderio di successo in ambito accademico. O per lo meno, il fato di uno due bambini, quello più danneggiato, quello che, con molta superficialità, verrà dato in adozione a Londra.

A terrible event happens in London and a female professor of psychiatry now close to retirement is interested in it in a particular way. From here begins a complex story, at times disturbing, told by many voices from the protagonists of the events, which rose from a particularly horrible case of child abuse to another case, especially annoying, of bullying in the workplace.
It is especially through the voice of Anne, young doctor in the testosterone load world of American University of Psychiatry , which we learn of the tragic events of the past, and how the fate of the two children mistreated by the family was inexorably marked by the men's inability to asking the right questions and the desire for success in academia. Or at least, the fate of one of the two children, the most damaged, the one that, with a lot of superficiality, will be given up for adoption in London.
