Un fantasy? Indubbiamente. Un thriller? Anche questo è fuor di dubbio. Ma questo libro contiene anche una bella storia d'amore, decisamente fuori dall'ordinario, e parecchie speculazioni sul rapporto tra umanità e divinità molto ben inserite nella storia, ed è entusiasmante come può esserlo solo un libro d'avventura.
Così, seguendo col fiato sospeso le vicende di Shara e Sigurd, si finisce col parteggiare con questo o con quel personaggio, con lo speculare sull'uso politico dell'omicidio e sul fanatismo religioso, e ci si innamora profondamente di quel posto divino e folle che è il Continente.


A fantasy? Undoubtedly. A thriller? This, too, is beyond doubt. But this book also contains a beautiful love story, definitely out of the ordinary, and a lot of speculation about the relationship between humanity and divinity very well-rooted in history, and it is exciting as it can be just a book of adventure.
So, following with bated breath the story of Sigurd and Shara, the reader ends up siding with this or that character, and speculating about political murders and religious fanaticism, falling deeply in love of that divine and crazy place which is the Continent.

Sex!: The Punctuation Mark of Life

Considerato il lavoro che faccio, vale a dire redattore per una casa editrice specializzata in romanzi erotici, mi sono avvicinata a questo libro piuttosto speranzosa, dato che la quarta di copertina prometteva vere storie di vero sesso. Non dubito assolutamente del fatto che le storie siano vere, quello di cui dubito è che siano in grado di coinvolgere eroticamente il lettore. Nell'introduzione l'autrice scrive che il lettore può tranquillamente masturbarsi, se la lettura lo spinge a farlo, se non che già a metà del primo racconto più che desiderio sessuale ho cominciato a provare una insopprimibile noia. Non è usando a più non posso il verbo fottere, declinato in vari modi, e nemmeno riempiendo le pagine della riproduzione di gridolini di soddisfazione, che si genera eccitazione. La scrittura in generale è piatta e sciatta, e l'uso del tempo presente anche per avvenimenti risalenti a quaranta anni fa fa assomigliare il tutto a un temino delle medie. Sconsigliabile.


Given the work that I do, editor for a Publishing House specialized in erotic novels, I approached this book quite hopeful: the back cover promised real stories of real sex. Absolutely no doubt that the stories are true, which I doubt is that they are able to erotically engage the reader. In the introduction, the author writes that the reader can feel free to masturbate when the reading inspires her/him to do so, but already in the first half of the first story I began to feel an irrepressible boredom rather than sexual desire. It is not using word like to fuck, declined in various ways, and not filling the pages of reproduction of squeals of satisfaction, that generates excitement. The writing in general is flat and sloppy, and the use of the present tense for events dating back to forty years ago, make everything liking like a junior high homework. Inadvisable.

Divertente romanzo di fantascienza "molle" basata sui viaggi nel tempo, ma solo nel passato e solo a scopi di studio. Anche così però, non sempre le cose vanno come dovrebbero andare, anche e soprattutto quando i ricercatori si portano dietro i propri problemi e le proprie frustrazioni, senza contare che la Storia protegge il suo corso, senza curarsi della vita e del benessere dei viaggiatori.


Funny "soft" science fiction novel based on time travel - only in the past and only for study purposes. Even so, things do not always go the way they should go, especially when researchers bring with them their problems and frustrations, not to mention that history protects its course, regardless of the life and welfare of the community.

Full-Blood Half-Breed

In un mondo di mescolanze e contraddizioni, dove l'umanità è divisa in quattro razze che servono quattro dei attraverso l'uso rituale di arti marziali, e dove la purezza razziale è una patente di nobiltà, due ragazzi completamente diversi, eppure molto simili nel loro desiderio di emergere, finiscono inevitabilmente in rotta di collisione. Uno è un puro sangue, e allo stesso tempo un reietto della sua razza, della quale non ha le caratteristiche salienti, l'altro un sangue misto di incredibile bellezza e grande talento, che però, proprio a causa della non purezza del suo sangue, si sente spinto a usare uno stile di lotta che mescola le caratteristiche di tutte e quattro le arti rituali per ottenere una nuova arte tanto micidiale quanto ritenuta blasfema.
In questa situazione già abbastanza complicata, si innesta un nuovo dio, che pretende di essere l'unico e il cui profeta esige la sottomissione di tutti i cittadini tramite un vero e proprio bagno di sangue.
Chiaramente destinato ad avere un seguito, questo lungo fantasy è piuttosto intrigante, anche se la lettura risulta a tratti difficile a causa dell'uso eccessivo di un mix linguistico assai variegato.


In a world of crossbreeding and contradictions, human race divided into four breeds that are at the service of four gods by means of four ritual martial arts and racial purity is a patent of nobility. Two young men are completely different, yet very similar in their desire to emerge, and inevitably end up in a fight. One is a pure blood, and at the same time an outcast of his race, of which has not the salient features, the other is a mixed blood of incredible beauty and talent, but, precisely because of the non- purity of his blood, feels compelled to use a fighting style that combines the features of all four rituals arts, to get a new art very deadly, and considered blasphemous .
In this situation already complicated, it inserts a new god, that pretends to be the one, and whose prophet demands the subjugation of all citizens through a real bloodbath.
Clearly intended to have a sequel, this long fantasy is quite intriguing, even if the reading is sometimes difficult due to the excessive use of a multi-faceted linguistic mix .

Sacred Mountain

Tre filoni principali si mescolano in questo libro: il tormento di un giovane ufficiale inglese sopravvissuto alla guerra di Birmania e alle torture praticate dai giapponesi che lo hanno catturato, la conquista dell'Everest e una insolita e delicata storia d'amore. A fare da collante il rapimento, ad opera dei Comunisti cinesi, di un importante Lama ai fini di minare alla base la teocrazia che regge il Tibet. Un susseguirsi di colpi di scena, di amicizie e tradimenti, e inaspettati incontri, rende assai piacevole la lettura di questo lungo romanzo.


Three main strands combine in this book: the torment of a young British officer survived at the war in Burma and at the torture practiced by the Japanese who have caught him, the conquest of Everest and an unusual love story. As glue the abduction, by the Chinese Communists, of an important Lama in order to undermine the theocracy that governs Tibet. A series of twists and turns, friendships and betrayals, and unexpected meetings, makes very pleasant the reading this long novel.

Crimes of the Levee

Un noir molto americano, ambientato in una Chicago patria del vizio e della malavita, con un detective che ha alle spalle una vita amara e un padre inconfessabile e che lavora in un distretto di polizia dove non fanno altro che cercare di impedirgli di raggiungere la verità. Così, anche se i suoi casi sono sempre sul punto di finire in niente, lui prosegue imperterrito, incurante della violenza che gli si scatena intorno, fino a scoprire il vero colpevole, anche se quel colpevole parrebbe essere proprio suo padre.
Il libro è bello e avvincente, le tre stelline sono dovute solo al fatto che avrebbe necessitato di un più accurato lavoro di editing sulla trama, che a volte si sfilaccia un po'.

A very American noir, set in a Chicago home of vice and crime, with a detective who has a bitter life and and a shameful father, who works at a police station where they just try to stop him from reaching the truth. So, even though his cases are always on the verge of ending up in nothing, he continues undaunted, regardless of the violence that broke out around him, to find the real culprit, even if that the offender would seem to be just his father.
The book is beautiful and compelling, the three starlets are only due to the fact that would have required a more careful editing work on the plot, which sometimes frays a bit'.

Marta Oulie: A Novel of Betrayal

Marta è una specie di moderna Bovary, anche se, a differenza del modello originale, è colta e spirituale e il suo tradimento viene più dalla lotta tra i sessi che nei paesi scandinavi data dagli inizi del secolo, piuttosto che da una noia di tipo estetico.
Essendo una creatura decisamente spirituale, dopo il tradimento e complice la malattia del marito, Marta scende tutti gli scalini del rimorso fino al riscatto, costituito dalla presa di coscienza che le è possibile vivere come donna emancipata, senza un uomo al suo fianco.
Opera prima di una donna che si aggiudicherà il premio Nobel, pur mostrando i limiti dell'estrema giovinezza e dell'immaturità stilistica dell'autrice, ha una enorme potenza di linguaggio e una altrettanto grande capacità di entrare nell'intimo dei personaggi.
La traduzione in inglese rende perfettamente il linguaggio originale.


Marta is like a modern Bovary, although, unlike the original one, she is cultured and spiritual, and her betrayal is caused more by the struggle between the sexes, that in the Scandinavian countries dates from the beginning of the century, rather than an aesthetic kind of boredom.
Being mainly a spiritual creature, after the betrayal and with the complicity of the illness of her husband, Martha gets off all the steps of remorse until a redemption, consisting of the awareness that it is possible to live as a liberated woman, without a man by her side.
First work of a woman who will win the Nobel Prize, while showing the limits of the extreme youth and the immature style of the author, has a tremendous power of language and an equally great capacity to enter deeply into the characters.
The English translation transmits perfectly the original language .
