Il morso del serpente

Il morso del serpenteElizabeth George
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Titolo originale In Pursuit of the Proper Sinner - 1991

(Il titolo originale è "In pursuit of the proper sinner")

Two young men found dead on the moor, and too many, too many possible killers, although the motive seems assured given that one of the dead was a girl of very easy costumes. Of course, nothing is as it seems, some other body will turn up along the way and Barbara Havers rise, phoenix-like, from hers professional ashes , so much of a particularly obnoxious Inspector Lynley.
But what mean the snakes ??? (The original title is 'In pursuit of the proper sinner')

I giochi della notte

I giochi della notte Stig Dagerman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Titolo originale Nattens lekar - 1947
Pubblicato in Italia settembre 1996

Mrs. Dalloway

Mrs. Dalloway Virginia Woolf
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Prima pubblicazione 1925

It must be the curse of the celebrated classic, but I did not like at all this novel. Not to mention that I do not know if I have not understood it or if I understood it all too well. It is nothing more than the superficial and empty story  of a superficial and empty day for a group of superficial and empty people. Even the characters that should be the bearers of a conflict, of a more experienced humanity, as Peter Walsh, fail to emerge from the emptiness. The only character that remains impressed, with all his pain of misunderstood in his trauma war's veteran , is Septimus, whose story only serves to make it even more unreal the other characters. Clarissa Dalloway is the protagonist in the novel no longer than Anna Karenina, also a simple extra that serves as a pretext to tie the stories of the other characters, and manages to miss the only time she could really become the protagonist liquidating in two words  reflection about Septimus's death. No note on language, it seems to me that the translation is of the useless dignified type in vogue for the writings that are considered essential and which has the sole function of keeping away the reader.

Critica della ragion criminale

Critica della ragion criminaleMichael Gregorio
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Titolo originale Critique of Criminal Reason - 14 novembre 2006 da Thomas Dunne Books

Who could be the only possible precursor of the deductive method of investigation, even before the one that led him to fame, namely Sherlock Holmes? Immanuel Kant, the great philosopher who pushed his mind beyond all bounds of reason.
And will be Stiffenius, Prussian prosecutor, a man who saw the evil and reluctant student of Kant, to follow step by step the way that his teacher has prepared for him, to solve the horrendous mysteries of Koninsberg, and of the human soul.
First book in a series devoted to the prosecutor, is flowing even if a little immature.

Ritratto di gruppo con assenza

Ritratto di gruppo con assenza Luis Sepúlveda
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Molto piacevole.

Fiesta

Fiesta Ernest Hemingway
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Titolo originale The Sun Also Rises - 1926

Written with harsh, precise and instructive language in which the dialogues are the masters, it is one of those books that either you love or hate.
With the eyes of today, there are all the the reasons to hate it: the protagonists are drunk most of the time, and their drunkenness is described in the most possible realistic way and permeates the endless conversations that at times brush against the absurd; and then there is the bullfighting, a spectacle which we feel hateful and very evidently to Hemingway's eyes was not.
Yet one has to think about who are the Hemingway's characters: people who survived the massacre of World War I, and when they are not devastated in the body (represented by injury that devastates the body of the male protagonist preventing him from having a physical relationship with the woman who he loves) they are in the mind, and drunkenness is the only way to live in a reality that does not fit. And then of course there is the bullfighting. What for us is an abomination is actually a catharsis, the bull is a kind of sublimation of the brutality of war, and must be killed, and the good bullfighter is he that enters the space of the bull without fear, triumphs and kills it.
