Ho sempre sostenuto che un buon romanzo storico può dare più informazioni di qualsiasi libro di storia sul periodo di cui tratta. Questo perché un buon romanzo storico coniuga un elevato livello di attendibilità relativo ai luoghi, ai tempi, alle relazioni tra i personaggi realmente esistiti, con una parte romanzesca che questi personaggi fa vivere, costruita studiandone a fondo la personalità. The Dancer and the Raja è sotto tutti i punti di vista un buon romanzo storico il cui personaggio principale, Anita Delgado - una giovanissima ballerina di origine spagnola diventata per matrimonio una principessa indiana - si muove sullo sfondo della Belle Époque e del rigido codice morale della società angloindiana di epoca vittoriana. Molto ben scritto, con personaggi a tutto tondo, e molto ben documentato dal punto di vista della storia "storica", è necessario ricordare che è comunque un romanzo, e pertanto quelli che sono descritti come i sentimenti e le relazioni tra i vari protagonisti sono frutto della fantasia dell'autore.



I have always said that a good historical novel can give more information than any history book on the period of which it speaks. This is because a good historical novel combines a high level of trust relating to the places, the times, the relationship between the characters really existed, with a fictional part that makes these characters alive, built by studying in depth the personality. The Dancer and the Raja is from all points of view a good historical novel whose main character, Anita Delgado - a very young dancer of Spanish origin become by wedding an Indian princess - moves on the background of Belle Epoque and of the strict moral code of Anglo-Indian society of the Victorian era. Very well written, with all-round characters, and very well documented from the point of view of historic histor, you must remember that it is still a novel, and therefore those who are described as the feelings and relationships between the various protagonists are fruit of the imagination of the author.
